Pocahontas is a figure with much cultural capital, even today, and her influence was historically important to Native and European agendas alike. Pocahontas as a person indeed had a life that seemed to influence political relations between Native and European (specifically Powhatan, specifically English). Xishuangbanna is home to one of the most biologically and culturally diverse regions in China. Dai medicine from the Dai people has been recognized by China as one of the four major ethnic minority medicines. With over 2,500 years of practice, Dai medicine utilizes the herbs found in the diverse region mixed with principles and theories from Buddhism. There have been over 500 unique herbs used in Dai medicine, each with different properties and functions. Many who read Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita express negative reactions at its conclusion, such as revulsion, anger, and outright dismissal of its highly controversial plot. However, the contents of this story constitute only half of its importance. The other half is the hypnotic and slippery mode in which it is told. The dual configuration of the narrator as the protagonist allows the main character to craft his own version of the events that have taken place in his life through a demented, artistic frame.

When considering the rehabilitation of historic buildings, we should not just think about how much energy we can save, but in addition, what sustainable measures could be implemented as to not destroy the cultural integrity/authenticity or the historic structure of the building. Therefore, performing rehabilitation measures on historic buildings is more complex than buildings that do not contain the same architectural importance or value. This research focuses on assessing the energy rating systems ('green building certification' programs) and discusses if those systems can address historic values and building preservation. The Effect Of The 1918 Influenza Pandemic On U.S. Life Insurance Holdings, Dr. Joanna Short

This paper examines the effect of a sharp rise in mortality, the 1918 influenza epidemic, on life insurance holdings in the U.S. The BLS Cost of Living Surveys of 1918-1919 provide a unique opportunity to examine the effect of the pandemic—some households were surveyed before, and others during or shortly after the worst of the influenza outbreak. In addition, I use state-level insurance sales data to compare the increase in spending on insurance in states particularly hard hit by the epidemic, relative to those that were not. I find some evidence that, in the immediate aftermath of the epidemic, those …

Vertical files were very popular in libraries before internet searching as a way to collate like materials found on specific subjects. The Special Collections vertical files contain clippings, pamphlets, articles, booklets and other literature that is too insignificant to catalog. The patronage system was the dominant force behind the creation of new works of art throughout the Renaissance and helped to bring about some of the greatest masterpieces of the time. This paper will specifically examine the works patronized by Isabella d’Este, including music, musical instruments, and literature. Using the patronage classification system discussed by Howard M. Brown, this paper will discuss Isabella’s motivations as a patron, either out of an internal love of art (mecenatismo) or to conform to societal expectations and other external cultural pressures (clientelismo). Purpose: This paper analyzes some of the epistemically pernicious effects of use of the Internet and social media. In light of this analysis, it introduces the concept of epistemic pornography and argues that epistemic agents both can and should avoid consuming and sharing epistemic pornography.

Design/Methodology/Approach: The paper draws on research on epistemic virtue, cognitive biases, social media use and its epistemic consequences, Fake News, paternalistic nudging, pornography, moral philosophy, moral elevation, and moral exemplar theory to analyze the epistemically pernicious effects of the Internet and social media.

Forty years ago this month, Pope John Paul II came to Ireland. I was just beginning my last year in school at Saint Columb's College, Derry. It was a tense time. In the three months leading up to the pope's visit, 36 people were killed in the Troubles - including 16 Catholic and Protestant civilians. In 1979 I went to see the Pope at Drogheda and subconsciously I think his words on that occasion have possibly framed much of my thinking about this evening's theme - the role of faith in our politics.
