Artificial intelligence is affecting many areas of our lives and governmental policy. National security is one arena in which artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important and controversial role. U.S. Government and military agencies are producing a steadily expanding corpus of publicly available literature on this topic. This literature documents how these agencies have this topic's national security implications historically and currently while also addressing potentially emerging national security issues where artificial intelligence will intersect with national security. Multimodal Composition And Digital Technology: Investigating The Out-Of-Class Experiences Of Students In A First-Year Composition Class, Jennifer Morgan Sims

This study explores how first-year students in a multimodal composition class use digital technology outside of class to complete their projects. The tendency in Composition studies to characterize students as “self-teaching” users of technology may obscure complex out-of-class experiences, so this study analyzes data from project reflections of 19 first-year students completing digital multimodal compositions to gain insight into their practices. Qualitative analysis reveals that the technical problems students encountered tended to be frequent and repetitive, and some problems were exacerbated by conflicts between the assignment requirements and the capacity of the technology required. Abstract: This presentation is targeted primarily toward new repository administrators. During early projects on the Digital Commons platform in 2016 we uploaded full-issue PDFs for some titles. Soon we uploaded the Administrative Issues Journal and Mythlore with links to each article of the issue homepage. The difference in usage numbers of journals with full-issue PDFs to those that are broken down to the article level is huge. The result is that we returned to break up the full-issue items down.

The bridge program for incoming music majors at Louisiana State University, run by the School of Music, is a program in its sixth year of existence (2014-2019). The program is a 5 day pre-college orientation that seeks to “bridge the gaps” for incoming music majors through a variety of programming, including sessions on note taking and lectures (given by current music faculty), peer-led integration sessions, financial and time-management workshops presented by university staff, and panels with alumni and community arts leaders. Here And There, Now And Then: Portrayals Of The Third Crusade In Film And How Their Inaccuracies Encompass Contemporary Movements, Steven Anthony

This paper examines the relationship between films dealing with historical events and how they encompass events of the time the film was made. This work uses two film representations of the Third Crusade, from 1187 – 1192; the first is Youssef Chahines’ 1963 film Al Nasser Salah Ad-Din and the second is Ridley Scotts’ 2005 film, Kingdom of Heaven. Between the films’ narrations of events and the actual history, parallels are created between past and present, dealing with ideas such as tolerance and peaceful dialogue, as well as movements such as national, ethnic, or religious unity and inclusiveness.

Roses And Votes: Immigrant Jewish Women And The New York Woman Suffrage Movement, 1894-1917, Katelyn Johnson

The purpose of this article is to explore the role that Jewish immigrant women had in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. It is focused in New York due to the unique concurrency of a large, concentrated Jewish immigrant community and a heavily active location for the Women’s Suffrage Movement. The project draws a strong link to Jewish workingwomen’s influence and participation in the Labor Rights Movement, also during the early nineteenth century. The research draws upon several primary sources from the Lower East Side Jewish community, as well as the research of historians Susan A. Glenn and Melissa R. Klapper. The …

Glocalized Apartheid: Global Apartheid, The Global Implications Of Local South African Resistance Movements, And The Creation Of Counter Globalization, Alexis Butts

This paper seeks to explore numerous local cases of resistance in South Africa and their connection to global social inequality. The paper links historical and current localized resistance movements to a greater global struggle referred to as “global apartheid.” It shows that similar struggles are ongoing all over the “developing” world, where sentiments of social justice are present, creating a “counter globalization” movement tied to the struggle against global apartheid. This paper also speculates on the overall effectiveness of the notion of global apartheid and its associated movements, and the complications associated with using this term.

The City of Riverside has benefited economically, culturally, socially, and historically through the diverse contributions of Chinese immigrants. In the nineteenth and twentieth century, Chinese immigrants contributed by making Riverside an economic powerhouse through its citrus industry. Riverside’s Chinatown, which once was populated and flourished by thousands of Chinese bachelors during harvest season, has been deserted and neglected over the past several decades. The site where Riverside’s Chinatown once stood is one of the richest sites of Chinese American artifacts in the United States, yet is currently under threat for being destroyed to make way for new development.

Whether in terms of a country, a group or an individual, the exact definition is almost as difficult to answer as to what constitutes a group. The Manchus, an ethnic group in China, also faced this dilemma. It was an issue that lasted throughout their entire time as rulers of the Qing Dynasty (1644- 1911) and thereafter. The media over the past four years have continued to report about the female inclusion into this male dominated resistance group, the PKK in Turkey. The addition of women to the fight spread to various Kurdish resistance groups throughout the Middle East. The 2019 Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival (CNSJF) was held during the U.S. Labor Day Weekend between August 29 and August 31. The festival has generated beautiful memories for many and is a compelling magnet for bringing people together. Its sizeable economic contribution, promotional value, and its appeal to new and affluent market segments are the most significant benefits of the CNSJF to the destination. These gripping results make the festival the flagship platform shaping Curaçao's future.

The festival attracted 5,008 international attendees, which spent US$2,522 per trip per person, and US$413 per day per person. Spending per person was …

James Petiver’S ‘Kind Friends’ And ‘Curious Persons’ In The Atlantic World: Commerce, Colonialism And Collecting, Kate S. Murphy

In 1695, James Petiver concluded the first ‘century’ of his Musei Petiveriani by observing that he had received the specimens described within it from his ‘Kind Friends from divers parts of the World’ and ‘Curious Persons…Abroad’. This essay examines Petiver’s network of such ‘Kind Friends’ and ‘Curious Persons’ in the Atlantic World. The composition of Petiver’s network reflected many of the broader patterns of English commerce in the Atlantic at the turn of the eighteenth century. Moreover, England’s growing overseas empire and its expanding commercial activity required a parallel expansion in maritime labour. Mariners were correspondingly central to Petiver’s work …

Three dimensions of color

• hue, lightness, and saturation
• Hue = color
• Lightness - measures the relative degree of black or white that’s been mixed with a given hue. Adding white makes the color lighter (creates tints) and adding black makes it darker (creates shades).
• Saturation - how pure or intense a color is; the more saturated a color, the more vivid or brighter it appears

This thesis is about the colonization of the West, with an emphasis on the Pacific Northwest from 1853 to 1895. It analyzes the historical processes occurring as America expanded westward through the lens of the Kautz family. August Kautz and his wives tell the story of colonization through unique and vastly different ways. This thesis argues that a microanalysis of the Kautz family history tells a greater story of colonization, one rife with complicated layers influenced by race, class, and societal expectations that shaped individual roles within colonization.

Music ensemble directors need to overcome complex challenges to meet the goal of inclusion because ensembles often contain a mixture of ages, grades, social and intellectual development stages, musical skills, and a wide variety of diverse learning needs. This study focuses on how a choral ensemble director may create an inclusive environment for students on the Autism Spectrum.

This study reviewed current research on creating inclusive rehearsal environments.
