Harrowing The Church: Gregory Vii, Manasses Of Reims, And The Eleventh-Century Ecclesiastical Revolution In France, John Schechtman-Marko

This thesis examines the deposition of French bishops from office during the pontificate of Gregory VII (1073-1085). By comparing the various cases of deposition, I analyze how the ideologies of papal supremacy which were then being developed in Rome were actually put into practice by the Gregorian reformers. Based on this analysis, I conclude that the establishment of Roman supremacy in France, although revolutionary in character, was achieved through the manipulation of existing ecclesiastical institutions and through an alliance between the papacy and a variety of low-level church officials.

Circular Inspirations: Medieval Mediterranean Influence In The Treasury Of San Marco, Claire Rasmussen

San Marco’s composite objects combine art of contrasting style and origin, resulting in a united piece made out of two or three discrete parts. These objects defy easy categorization; they were made into composite objects by the Venetians, far from where much of the source material was from, with specific intent. I argue that the composite objects should be viewed as translations, which requires repositioning the object's exact origin point as only one component of its identity, rather than its defining aspect. Rather than classify the objects by their "first life", I will instead organize them based on the different …

Destierro And Desengaño: The Disabled Body In Golden Age Spanish Portraiture, Colin C. Sanborn

This paper analyzes the role of the disabled body in Golden Age Spanish court portraiture, focusing in particular on Diego Velázquez's work for Philip IV. Although this body of work has been examined extensively, few scholars have investigated what it implies about 17th-century Spaniards' conception of human divergence, and fewer still have done so without falling back on outdated models of disability. I thus hope to demonstrate through this thesis both disability's continued cultural importance and the utility of an analysis grounded in contemporary disability theory. Echo epidemics would sweep through Europe well into the eighteenth century, yet none would parallel the terror and drama particular to the Black Death (1348-1351), nor would they inflict as violent an injury upon paradigms of historical writing. This thesis explores and evaluates how the Black Death affected medieval historical narrative.

This project seeks to interrogate the socio-spatial implications of New York City's contemporary criminal justice machine through mayor Bill de Blasio's ongoing jail reform plan to build new, "borough-based jails." In 2017, following decades of controversy over entrenched violence and horrific abuses on Rikers Island, New York's notorious island penal colony, de Blasio announced a 10-year plan to "to close Rikers Island and replace it with a smaller network of modern jails." While the plan claims to make jails in New York "smaller, safer, and fairer," this project analyzes the plan's strategies, its rhetoric, and its goals to understand the …

The present study explored the different levels of motivation, the relationship between the three components of the L2 Motivational Self System and language proficiency as well as the reasons behind the students' motivation in learning at two private English schools in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. One-hundred and twenty students with different levels of English, ages ranging from 9 to 21 years old, were divided into low and high achiever groups. They participated in the quantitative data collection phase. Data were collected through an English proficiency test and a questionnaire. With this lack of diversity in mind, I have created a resource guide with the goal of helping in-service and pre-service teachers to develop a more culturally relevant pedagogy through the use of diverse literature in their curriculum and the incorporation of more perspective-taking activities into their lessons. Exploring The Use Of Marimba In Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lucas Mccarren

This study explored the use of the marimba in Nordoff Robbins music therapy with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Three clients each received two individual 30 to 45-minute music therapy sessions over the course of three weeks. After reviewing the sessions an inductive thematic analysis was competed in order to determine themes that occurred throughout the study. Five themes were discussed using clinical examples and musical transcriptions. These themes included: (a) sharing the marimba to strengthen the therapeutic relationship, (b) the use of marimba as an accompanying instrument, (c) rhythmic structuring, (d) the use of Nordoff Robbins repertoire on marimba, …

The purpose of this study was to describe the group dynamics of Autistic children in a developmental, individual difference, relationship-based improvisational music therapy group, understand how those dynamics manifested, and to observe changes over time. The primary data source was archived clinical videos from the first, middle, and last sessions of one clinical year. A qualitative content analysis using the Music Therapy Group Improvisation Analysis Model involved a cyclical process of listening, writing descriptive narratives, and analyzing those narratives to develop meaning categories describing the group dynamics. The Experience Of Songwriting In Music Therapy For Adults With Intellectual Disability, Jasper Lewis

This research study investigated the lived experience of adults with Intellectual Disability (ID) in a music therapy songwriting session. Three study participants, referred to here as Emma, Anne, and Abdoul, took part in individual songwriting music therapy sessions. The participants each completed an original song in collaboration with a board certified music therapist. The songs were recorded and the lyrics of the song were transcribed. After the songwriting experience was complete a 10-20 minute semi-structured interview was conducted to gather data about the participants’ subjective experiences. This data was analyzed according to the interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) framework. Themes were …
