"Still in Kushimoto" is a novel told from the perspective of a young American man named Zim who finds himself at a campground at the southern tip of Japan's Honshu Island in the rural town of Kushimoto. He makes a New Year's resolution to write in a journal in a conscious attempt to find the narrative of his own life. The novel takes the form of present day journal entries, interwoven with recollected past events in alternating chapters. As the story of the past moves forward, towards the end of the novel it merges with the present, but Zim finds …

Background: Singing is a natural enjoyment of life; however, individuals tend to isolate themselves from this enjoyment due to their inability to match pitch accurately. A new technology, the Natural Ear provides altered auditory feedback to the user while singing. It is hypothesized that this feedback may aid in the userâ??s ability to match pitch.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of the Natural Ear to amplification and no amplification conditions on pitch matching accuracy in song.

Study Design: This study used a complex counterbalance within-subjects design.

The Negative Impact Of Copy-Pasting Within Memoranda: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Army's Sharp Program Memoranda, Lionell Manlutac

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This research used the framework of the coding system of grounded theory to analyze the United States Army's Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) Program memoranda. A rhetorical analysis framework was used to point out the need to incorporate social justice into technical communication. The analysis of the copy-pasted information shows that the author lacks an authorial voice and writing to a general audience, which creates a lack of exigency in creating a safe and healthy work environment.

Soot & Shadow is a creative nonfiction-based collection of poetry that focuses on the themes of freedom and loss. The manuscript delves into the lives of immigrant women, specifically those affected by the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and those who came to America as the brides of American servicemen following WWII. Based on eyewitness testimony, the poetry attempts to capture the essence of the events, the devastating tragedy, love, loss, and the freedom these women sought as they discovered Truth through adversity. Despite best intentions, global health development initiatives have historically drawn on a universalized notion of ‘traditional notion’ as the basis for intervention. These international organizations generate a discourse of development in which the global attempts to control the local, complicating relational paradigms and experiences. A concrete example of the way in which the international institutions attempt to ‘develop’ local communities is through the implementation of training programs. Although these interventions are supported as progressive attempts to ‘bridge gaps’ between local realities and global imaginaries, they establish paradigms that ignore lived experience. This essay examines New Orleans maroon colonies as a precursor to the postsuburban constellations that shape the contemporary urban landscape. These communities served as the original neutral grounds where Africans, Afro-Creoles, and Native Americans created spaces beyond the purview of slave owners and government authorities. These protosuburban enclaves anticipated the vibrancy and prolificacy of the “global urban periphery” that Roger Keil describes in his research.
