When June’s father dies in Indiana during the late 1800s, she prays for a healer to come to the small town of Gray so that no one will ever suffer again. Next thing she knows, there’s a tornado and a man in a balloon blows into town claiming to be a doctor. At first, the new doctor cures anything and everything, but soon the town’s preacher takes ill with a mysterious plague.

This study explores Palestinian women’s performativity regarding the thob as a form of agency. As wearers, designers, and advocators of the Palestinian thob, they gain authority over the discursive inventions of cultural and national symbols. They reconfigure what has been historically connected with tradition and antiquity into contemporary and fashionable. As their traditional –which is yet dynamic- dress and as a sign of their various identities, Palestinian cultural clothing and other types of ornamentation serve as means for Palestinian women in the US to enlarge their social role in addition to generating new meanings as “expressive culture of the …

My presentation is titled, “Twins in Blood Only: Zadie Smith’s White Teeth and the Failure of Foils”. I initially conceived of this to be a conference paper, but as I jumped into the novel with a class of high school juniors and seniors last spring, I realized that it was the germ of a conference paper, but also a truly dynamic teaching text. What follows is my experiences teaching the novel, as well as how my students and myself worked through some of the more complex and troubling aspects of the plot. Mayan Bloodshed: Examining What Allowed For Genocide To Occur In Early Colonial Yucatan, Tyler C. Rodriguez

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

By the mid-sixteenth century, Yucatan was firmly under Catholic control. By 1561, there were dozens of friars and eight monasteries in operation, and programs aimed at converting Mayan natives to Catholicism appeared to be going smoothly. However, in 1562 friars at Mani were confronted with clear evidence that the “Christian Indians” were still worshiping their previous gods in secret. The Indians accused of idolatry were rounded up and subject to a severe form of torture known as the garrucha, a form of torture including flogging and the burning of flesh using wax.

Crimean Anti-Religious Persecution In 2018 And 2019, Felix Corley

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

In Russian-occupied Crimea in 2018, there were 23 prosecutions brought against individuals for ill-defined "missionary activity," of which 19 ended with punishment, Forum 18 has found. Many of those punished were prosecuted for sharing their faith on the street or for holding worship at unapproved venues. Cases against two more were due to be heard in mid-January 2019. This represents a doubling of such cases in the Crimean peninsula since the first year such punishments for "missionary activity" were imposed. July 2016 to July 2017 saw 13 known cases of which eight ended in punishment.
