This thesis argues the there is a strong, interdependent relationship between the creation of the American Jewish deli and the growth and progress of the food technology, food safety, and society within American life. The importance of recognizing the Jewish deli as a key element in tracing the history of American life post-1800s has been underemphasized throughout the deli’s entire existence. Jewish delis represented the intersection of centuries-old technologies and modern innovations, the meeting of centuries-old cultures and new communities, and formed the basis for a force that would have an outsized impact on American politics thereafter.

The general goal of this project is to investigate strategies and approaches used by comedians who rely heavily on racial humor in their acts. To do so, I consider the work of Dick Gregory, Richard Pryor, and Dave Chappelle, all African American male comedians. The first chapter focuses on a strategy employed by all three of these comedians called “marking whiteness.” Greta Fowler Snyder coined this term in her essay, “‘Marking Whiteness’ For Cross-Racial Solidarity” (2015), and uses it to describe strategies that force the “hyper-visibility” of whiteness. A mere three months after the peaceful Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, and less than a year after his last imprisonment under the communist regime, playwright-turned-president Václav Havel stood before a joint session of U.S. Congress in February of 1990. In his address, Havel marked, for his American audience, the new freedoms being established at home. สภาพแวดล้อมเป็นหนึ่งในสิ่งสำคัญที่ส่งผลต่อการเสื่อมสภาพของงานศิลปะ ภายในพิพิธภัณฑ์จึงมีข้อกำหนดเพื่อควบคุมปัจจัยที่ก่อให้เกิดการเสื่อมสภาพ อย่างไรก็ตามยังมีงานศิลปะจำนวนมากที่ไม่ได้ถูกเก็บรักษาภายในสถานที่ที่มีการควบคุม ดังนั้นหากสามารถทำนายกระบวนการเสื่อมสภาพที่เกิดขึ้นและมีการป้องกันแก้ไขทันที จะสามารถช่วยรักษางานศิลปะนั้นให้อยู่ในสภาพดีและยืดเวลาที่ต้องบูรณะออกไปได้ งานวิจัยนี้จึงสนใจศึกษาผลของการจำลองการเสื่อมสภาพที่มีสาเหตุจากแสงและความชื้นต่อสมบัติทางกายภาพและเคมีของสารสี เพื่อใช้ในการติดตามการเสื่อมสภาพขององค์ประกอบของชิ้นงานศิลปะ โดยทดลองกับสารสีจำลองที่พบในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์รัชกาลที่ 5 และพระบรมราชินีนาถ ที่หอประวัติจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย งานวิจัยนี้แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ส่วนหลัก ประการแรกคือการวิเคราะห์สารสีที่ใช้ในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์ด้วยการถ่ายภาพเชิงเทคนิคและเอกซเรย์ฟลูออเรสเซนต์สเปกโทรสโกปี ประการที่สองคือการศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสารสีในแผ่นสีตัวอย่าง เมื่อผ่านการจำลองการเสื่อมสภาพที่ระยะเวลาการเร่งการเสื่อมสภาพด้วยแสงที่ 5, 30, 50, 70 และ 100 ชั่วโมง และที่ระดับความชื้นสัมพัทธ์ 55% และ 75% ตรวจสอบผลด้วยอินฟราเรดสเปกโทรสโกปีและรามานสเปกโทรสโกปี ร่วมกับการวิเคราะห์ความต่างสีระหว่างแผ่นสีตัวอย่างภายใต้สภาวะควบคุมและแผ่นสีตัวอย่างที่ผ่านการเร่งการเสื่อมสภาพ ประการสุดท้ายคือการทำนายการเสื่อมสภาพของพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์ด้วยการเปรียบเทียบระหว่างสเปกตรัมการสะท้อนที่ได้จากสีในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์และแผ่นสีตัวอย่าง จากผลการวิจัยที่เทียบกับแผ่นชาร์ทสารสี CHSOS คาดว่ามีการใช้สารสีจำนวน 12 ชนิดในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์ เมื่อศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเคมีของสารสีในแผ่นสีตัวอย่างที่ผ่านการเร่งการเสื่อมสภาพและแผ่นสีตัวอย่างภายใต้สภาวะควบคุม พบว่าสารสีที่เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสเปกตรัมอินฟราเรด ได้แก่ สารสีสีดำงาช้าง สารสีสีน้ำตาลอัมเบอร์ สารสีสีแดงอะลิซาริน สารสีจากดินแดง สารสีสีเหลืองโครเมียม สารสีจากดินเหลือง และสารสีสีน้ำเงินมายา และสารสีที่เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงของสเปกตรัมรามาน ได้แก่ สารสีสีขาวไททาเนียมและสารสีสีขาวสังกะสี เมื่อวิเคราะห์ความแตกต่างสี พบว่าตัวอย่างสีที่ความชื้นสัมพัทธ์ 75% มีแนวโน้มที่จะให้ความแตกต่างสีมากกว่าตัวอย่างสีที่ความชื้นสัมพัทธ์ 55% อย่างไรก็ตามการเปลี่ยนแปลงจากการจำลองการเสื่อมสภาพนี้ยังไม่มากพอที่จะใช้ทำนายการเปลี่ยนแปลงในภาพพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์ได้อย่างแม่นยำ เพียงแต่ระบุได้ว่าการเสื่อมสภาพของสารสีในพระบรมสาทิสลักษณ์เทียบได้กับการเสื่อมสภาพมากกว่า 20 ปี ของการเก็บรักษางานศิลปะไว้ในพิพิธภัณฑ์

วัจนกรรมการขู่ในภาษาไทยกับปัจจัยเพศ: กรณีศึกษาคู่สนทนาที่มีสถานภาพเท่ากัน, พรหมมินทร์ ประไพพงษ์

วัจนกรรมการขู่เป็นวัจนกรรมที่ช่วยให้ผู้พูดบรรลุความต้องการของตน แต่ในขณะเดียวกันก็อาจส่งผลกระทบต่อความสัมพันธ์กับคู่สนทนา จึงเป็นอีกวัจนกรรมหนึ่งที่น่าสนใจ งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีทางภาษา ในการแสดงวัจนกรรมการขู่ กรณีศึกษาคู่สนทนาที่มีสถานภาพเท่ากัน และศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกลวิธีทางภาษาในการแสดงวัจนกรรมการขู่กับปัจจัยเพศของผู้พูด ข้อมูลที่ใช้ในงานวิจัยได้มาจากคำตอบในแบบสอบถามชนิดเติมเต็มบทสนทนา จำนวน 200 คน และการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก จำนวน 30 คน รวมทั้งสิ้น 230 คน แนวคิดที่ใช้วิเคราะห์ ได้แก่ แนวคิดวัจนกรรม และความสุภาพ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า เมื่อผู้พูดภาษาไทยตัดสินใจแสดงวัจนกรรมการขู่แล้ว ผู้พูดนิยมใช้กลวิธีที่ทำให้ การขู่สัมฤทธิ์ผลมากกว่าการรักษาความสัมพันธ์ ดังจะเห็นได้จากความถี่ของการเลือกใช้กลวิธีทางภาษาทั้ง 3 กลุ่มกลวิธี ได้แก่ 1) กลุ่มกลวิธีการทำให้คู่สนทนากลัวและ/หรือให้ทำตามสิ่งที่ผู้พูดต้องการ (ร้อยละ 73.27) 2) กลุ่มกลวิธีการแสดงความไม่พอใจ (ร้อยละ 18.80) และ 3) กลุ่มกลวิธีการพยายามรักษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้พูดกับคู่สนทนา (ร้อยละ 7.93) นอกจากนี้ผู้พูดภาษาไทยส่วนใหญ่เลือกใช้กลวิธีการทำให้คู่สนทนากลัวและ/หรือให้ทำตามสิ่งที่ผู้พูดต้องการเพียงกลุ่มกลวิธีเดียว อย่างไรก็ตามพบว่าในบางสถานการณ์ที่แสดงวัจนกรรมการขู่ ผู้พูดยังคงคำนึงถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง ผู้พูดกับคู่สนทนา ส่งผลให้พบการเลือกใช้กลวิธีทางภาษาที่มีลักษณะเป็นการขู่และปลอบในคราวเดียวกันซึ่งเป็นลักษณะเฉพาะในวัฒนธรรมไทย นอกจากนี้วัจนกรรมการขู่ของผู้พูดภาษาไทยยังสัมพันธ์กับปัจจัยทางสังคมและวัฒนธรรม 2 ประการ คือ แนวคิดเรื่องหน้า และความเกรงใจ เมื่อพิจารณาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกลวิธีทางภาษากับปัจจัยเพศของผู้พูด โดยใช้การทดสอบทางสถิติ t – test for correlate sample ที่ระดับนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ .05 ด้านการเลือกแสดงและไม่แสดงวัจนกรรม การขู่พบว่า กลุ่มตัวอย่างผู้พูดเพศชาย และเพศหญิงส่วนใหญ่เลือกไม่แสดงวัจนกรรมการขู่มากกว่า การแสดงวัจนกรรม ส่วนด้านกลวิธีทางภาษาที่ใช้แสดงวัจนกรรมการขู่พบว่า กลุ่มตัวอย่างผู้พูดเพศชายและเพศหญิงเลือกใช้กลวิธีทางภาษาทั้ง 3 กลุ่มกลวิธีโดยภาพรวมไม่แตกต่างกัน

สำนวนภาษาในวรรณคดีไทยที่สัมพันธ์กับสำนวนภาษาในวรรณคดีบาลีและสันสกฤต, อัสนี พูลรักษ์

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มุ่งศึกษาสำนวนภาษาในวรรณคดีไทยที่สันนิษฐานว่ามีที่มาจากวรรณคดีบาลีและสันสกฤต โดยใช้วรรณคดีไทยตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัยจนถึงสมัยปัจจุบัน ทั้งร้อยแก้วและร้อยกรอง เป็นข้อมูลในการศึกษา ผลการศึกษาพบว่า วรรณคดีไทยมีสำนวนภาษาบาลีเป็นจำนวนมาก และสำนวนภาษาสันสกฤตจำนวนหนึ่ง จำแนกได้เป็น 2 ประเภทใหญ่ ได้แก่ สำนวนไวยากรณ์ และสำนวนเนื้อหา กวีไทยรับสำนวนภาษาเหล่านี้มาใช้ 2 ลักษณะ ได้แก่ การแปลและการดัดแปลง เมื่อสำนวนภาษาบาลีและสันสกฤตเข้ามาสู่วรรณคดีไทยแล้วได้คลี่คลายไปตามปัจจัยต่าง ๆ ได้แก่ ขนบวรรณศิลป์และความคิดสร้างสรรค์ของกวีไทย ปริบทสังคมวัฒนธรรมไทย และสากลลักษณ์ของการรับอิทธิพลภาษาต่างประเทศและการแปล สำนวนภาษาบาลีและสันสกฤตนับว่ามีความสำคัญต่อวัฒนธรรมทางภาษาและวรรณคดีไทยเป็นอย่างยิ่ง ทั้งในฐานะที่เป็นองค์ประกอบของภาษาทำเนียบพิเศษ เป็นต้นเค้าของขนบการแต่งวรรณคดีไทยส่วนใหญ่และจารีตวรรณคดีไทยบางประเภท รวมทั้งเป็นวัตถุดิบในการสร้างสรรค์วัฒนธรรมทางภาษาและวรรณคดีไทยขึ้นใหม่โดยไม่รู้สิ้นสุด โดยนัยนี้ สำนวนภาษาบาลีและสันสกฤตจึงสะท้อนให้เห็นว่า วัฒนธรรมทางภาษาและวรรณคดีไทยมีลักษณะเป็นวัฒนธรรม ภารตานุวาท ซึ่งหมายความว่า ตลอดระยะเวลาที่ผ่านมา ความเจริญงอกงามของภาษาและวรรณคดีไทยส่วนหนึ่งเกิดจากการที่กวีไทยได้แปลและดัดแปลงสำนวนภาษาจากวรรณคดีภารตะ คือ บาลีและสันสกฤต แล้วนำมาสร้างสรรค์วรรณคดีไทยได้อย่างวิจิตรบรรจง

ดุษฎีนิพนธ์การประพันธ์เพลง จากหานเจียงสู่เจ้าพระยา สำหรับวงออร์เคสตรา เป็นบทประพันธ์เพลงคลาสสิกร่วมสมัยในลักษณะดนตรีพรรณนา (Program music) ที่กล่าวถึงเรื่องราวของชาวไทยเชื้อสายจีนที่อพยพจากแผ่นดินจีนเข้ามาตั้งรกรากในแผ่นดินไทย ผู้วิจัยได้ใช้วิธีผสมผสานเอกลักษณ์ของสำเนียงดนตรีตะวันออกเข้ากับหลักการประพันธ์เพลงแบบซิมโฟนีออร์เคสตราแบบตะวันตก โดยใช้สำเนียงทางดนตรีของ 2 ชาติ ได้แก่ ดนตรีจีนแต้จิ๋วและดนตรีไทยเดิมเพื่อเป็นวัตถุดิบในการประพันธ์ ผู้วิจัยได้ศึกษาวรรณกรรมดนตรีจีนแต้จิ๋วในรูปแบบบทเพลงวงเครื่องสายจีนและอุปรากรจีน และวรรณกรรมดนตรีคลาสสิกประเภทดนตรีพรรณนาในยุคโรแมนติกและดนตรีคลาสสิกสมัยใหม่ที่ประพันธ์โดยศิลปินชาวเอเชียที่มีแนวทางเดียวกัน นั่นคือการผสมผสานความเป็นดนตรีกระแสชาตินิยมให้เข้ากับรูปแบบของดนตรีออร์เคสตรา โดยผู้วิจัยได้นำอุปรากรจีนเรื่อง เจาจวินหยวน เป็นหลักในการประพันธ์และใช้ทำนองเปิดของเพลงไทยเดิม จีนเก็บบุปผา มาผสมผสานในงานชิ้นนี้ในรูปแบบเทคนิคการประพันธ์เพลงสมัยใหม่สำหรับออร์เคสตรา บทประพันธ์เพลง จากหานเจียงสู่เจ้าพระยา ประกอบด้วย 3 ท่อน ได้แก่ ท่อนที่ 1 สายน้ำและชีวิต ท่อนที่ 2 จีนล่อง และท่อนที่ 3 ถิ่น ใช้เวลาในการบรรเลงประมาณ 30 นาที

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่อง การสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์เกี่ยวกับเวทมนตร์ในวรรณกรรมไทย มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อหารูปแบบในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานนาฏยศิลป์ภายใต้หัวข้อ การสร้างสรรค์งานนาฏศิลป์เกี่ยวกับเวทมนตร์ในวรรณกรรมไทย และเพื่อหาแนวคิดหลังการสร้างสรรค์งานนาฏยศิลป์เกี่ยวกับเวทมนตร์ในวรรณคดีไทย โดยมีวิธีดำเนินการวิจัยที่สำคัญ ได้แก่ การศึกษาข้อมูลเชิงเอกสาร การสัมภาษณ์ การศึกษาข้อมูลจากสื่อสารสนเทศ การสังเกตการณ์แบบมีส่วนร่วม และการใช้ประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวของผู้วิจัย โดยรวบรวมข้อมูลและนำมาศึกษาเพื่อทำการวิเคราะห์ สังเคราะห์ ข้อมูล สร้างผลงานนาฏยศิลป์ และทำการสรุปผล ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ในการสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์เกี่ยวกับเวทมนตร์ในวรรณกรรมไทย เป็นการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลร่วมกับองค์ประกอบการแสดง 8 องค์ประกอบ ที่อยู่บนพื้นฐานของการศึกษา เรื่องเวทมนตร์ในวรรณกรรม เพื่อใช้กำหนดการแสดงองก์ต่าง ๆ ประกอบด้วย องก์ที่ 1 การใช้เวทมนตร์เพียงอย่างเดียว ได้แก่ เวทมนตร์แปลงกาย องก์ที่ 2 การใช้เวทมนตร์ควบคู่กับเครื่องรางของขลัง ได้แก่ การใช้เวทมนตร์กับผ้ายันต์ องก์ที่ 3 การใช้เวทมนตร์ควบคู่กับวัตถุสามัญ ได้แก่ การใช้เวทมนตร์กับใบไม้ องก์ที่ 4 การใช้เวทมนตร์ควบคู่กับวิญญาณ ได้แก่ การเรียกผี การปลุกผี การครอบงำวิญญาณให้เป็นบริวาร ใช้วิญญาณเป็นพาหนะและใช้วิญญาณเป็นม่านบังตา ภาพสุดท้าย คือ ความหายนะของการครอบครองเวทมนตร์มากเกินไป พร้อมทั้งทำการวิเคราะห์แนวคิดการสร้างสรรค์นาฏยศิลป์เกี่ยวกับเวทมนตร์ในวรรณกรรมไทย ได้แก่ การอนุรักษ์เนื้อหาและใจความสำคัญของวรรณกรรมไทยไว้ในรูปแบบการแสดงนาฏยศิลป์ ความเชื่อด้านเวทมนตร์ในวรรณกรรมไทย ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างเวทมนตร์กับพระพุทธศาสนา หลักการสัมพันธภาพ (Relationship) กับการออกแบบงานนาฏยศิลป์ ทฤษฎีสัญวิทยากับการออกแบบงานนาฏยศิลป์ รูปแบบผลงานการสร้างนาฏยศิลป์ตามเทคนิคและแนวคิดของศิลปินในยุคสมัยใหม่ (Modern dance) การใช้เวทมนตร์ในเชิงจิตวิทยา และการวิเคราะห์ผลงานสร้างสรรค์ตามเกณฑ์มาตรฐานการยกย่องศิลปินทางด้านนาฏยศิลป์ นอกจากนี้ยังวิเคราะห์องค์ประกอบการแสดงนาฏยศิลป์ทั้ง 8 องค์ประกอบในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน งานวิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องนี้มีคุณค่าต่อสังคมในการให้แนวคิดและปรัชญาแก่ประชาชน เพื่อเป็นประโยชน์ในด้านของการให้ปรัชญาในเรื่องการใช้วิธีพิเศษเพื่ออำนวยมาซึ่งสิ่งต่าง ๆ แต่ถ้าหากใช้อย่างไม่เหมาะสมจะทำให้จบลงด้วยความเสียหาย นอกจากนี้วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ยังเป็นการศึกษาเรื่องเวทมนตร์ในเชิงวรรณกรรมและความเชื่อเรื่องเวทมนตร์ของสังคมที่นำมาผนวกกับงานสร้างสรรค์ศิลปกรรมศาสตร์อย่างลงตัว

การวิจัยเรื่องการออกแบบมาสคอตเพื่อสื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ชุมชนโดยใช้แนวคิดคาวาอีฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ คือ 1) เพื่อศึกษาและวิเคราะห์วิธีการในการพัฒนามาสคอตให้สามารถสื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ชุมชนได้ 2) เพื่อศึกษาและวิเคราะห์แนวทางการออกแบบมาสคอตให้แสดงออกถึงความคาวาอีได้ 3) เพื่อนำองค์ความรู้ที่ได้มาสร้างสรรค์และนำเสนอตัวอย่างการออกแบบมาสคอตเพื่อสื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ชุมชนในประเทศไทยโดยใช้แนวคิดคาวาอี รวมไปถึงพัฒนาผลิตภัณฑ์หรือสื่อประชาสัมพันธ์อื่นๆ ของชุมชนได้ โดยใช้กระบวนการเก็บข้อมูลด้วยแบบสอบถามและการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกจากผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านการออกแบบมาสคอตเพื่อวิเคราะห์และคัดเลือกมาสคอตท้องถิ่นประเทศญี่ปุ่น (Yuru-chara) ที่มีความคาวาอี ร่วมกับการวิเคราะห์กลุ่มตัวอย่างจากเอกสารและหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ เก็บข้อมูลจากผู้นำ นักวิชาการในชุมชน และกลุ่มเป้าหมายเพื่อการออกแบบมาสคอต ตลอดจนพัฒนาผลงานร่วมกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญ จากการวิจัยพบว่าด้านวิธีการในการพัฒนามาสคอตเพื่อสื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ชุมชนนั้นสามารถแบ่งกระบวนการออกได้เป็น 3 ส่วนหลัก ได้แก่ 1) การออกแบบรูปลักษณ์มาสคอต 2) การออกแบบองค์ประกอบเสริมมาสคอต 3) การกำหนดบุคลิกภาพลักษณะนิสัยและความสามารถพิเศษ โดยเลือกใช้ประเด็นหรือที่มาที่สอดคล้องกับอัตลักษณ์ร่วมของชุมชนร่วมกับการเลือกใช้วิธีการแปลงสารที่เหมาะสมเพื่อให้ได้มาสคอต ด้านแนวทางทางการออกแบบมาสคอตให้แสดงออกถึงความคาวาอี สามารถดำเนินการออกแบบได้โดยใช้เกณฑ์คุณลักษณะความคาวาอีทางกายภาพ 5 ประการ อันได้แก่ 1) ความน่าเอ็นดูเหมือนเด็ก เช่น ปากเล็ก จมูกเล็ก ดวงตาโต 2) ความเปราะบางหรือน่าทะนุถนอม เช่น การใช้เส้นโค้งมนหรือทรงกลมเป็นหลัก 3) ความมีขนาดเล็ก เช่น การใช้สัดส่วนแบบ S.D. 4) ความไร้เดียงสา เช่น การชูมือ ยกแขนหรือขา 5) ความหวาน เช่น การใช้สีโทนสว่างหรือสีพาสเทลเป็นหลัก ทั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยได้นำองค์ความรู้ที่ได้ไปพัฒนามาสคอตเพื่อสื่อสารอัตลักษณ์ชุมชนโดยใช้แนวคิดคาวาอีจำนวน 3 ชุมชน อันได้แก่ ชุมชนสามแพร่ง ชุมชนวังหลังและวัดระฆัง และชุมชนท่าดินแดง นำไปสู่การคัดเลือกและต่อยอดมาสคอตชุมชนวังหลังและวัดระฆังให้มีความสมบูรณ์ในที่สุด ตลอดจนทดลองออกแบบคู่มือการใช้งาน ผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ระลึก ระบบป้ายสัญลักษณ์ ฯลฯ เพื่อเป็นแบบอย่างให้กับชุมชนหรือนักออกแบบที่สนใจสามารถนำไปต่อยอดในชุมชนอื่นๆ ได้ต่อไป

The study investigated Thai students’ errors in using L2 English reported questions based on Error Analysis. Thirty L1 Thai students of L2 English of the intermediate and advanced English proficiency levels did a written test on English reported questions covering four aspects: time reference, pronouns, spatial and temporal deixis, and the reported question structure. It was hypothesized that both groups of students would have problems with spatial and temporal deixis, and the intermediate students would have problems with time reference and object pronouns. The purpose of this study was to examine gendered practices and the experiences of women instructors within academia. Women face different challenges than men in the classroom, and many times, they are challenged by their students. In order to complete this study, I conducted narrative interviews with women faculty ranging from Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), contractual instructors, as well as tenured and untenured professors at a Midwest university. I was able to interview eight women faculty members of varying positions. After completing the interviews and analyzing the data from each instructor, three prominent themes emerged. This creative thesis is a memoir dedicated to a close examination of a childhood taking place in a meth ridden midwestern town, under the supervision of meth addicted parents. Using both prose and poetry to explore small excerpts of memory in a sequential vignette form, this memoir follows the author through early adolescents to middle school, tackling issues such as addiction in the home, prostitution, homelessness, and incarceration as well as more domestic points of interest like sibling bonds, childhood roleplay, and parent/child relationships.

This study shows the challenges the English Language Learners face in learning reading at the Elementary level; implementing reading strategies for them; and choosing effective strategies for the students to learn reading more easily. The findings of the study show that teachers use different strategies according to the language proficiency level of the students. ELL students face challenges in communication, pronunciation, sound recognition, and vocabulary. As a strategy to overcome these challenges, the teachers emphasize learning phonics and vocabulary. Observations of three teachers in three mainstream classrooms show that teachers implement nearly similar strategies for teaching phonics and vocabulary. The …

This repetitive and circular approach allows me to confront the cyclical nature of gendered oppression. What does it mean to make something beautiful and then to dismantle it? This thesis explores major texts dealing with pedagogical theory and active learning in the context of a theatre history class. By comparing a class which is taught in the traditional, chronological format relying heavily on lectures to a class taught in a newer, thematic format utilizing active learning the thesis defines what student-centered learning means. An unhealthy reliance on vision alone, fed by pervasive, doctored, hyperreal imagery in the mass media, suppresses a more balanced use of other senses, reinforcing superficial beauty standards. Trapped by an uncritical preference for the visually “perfect” and harmonious, people increasingly seek to remove physical attributes they consider “imperfect,” without first considering how these “imperfections” benefit and distinguish them as unique individuals.
