How Long Shall We Tarry? A Reception History Of Tarrying For The Baptism In The Spirit In Early Pentecostal Testimonies, Daniel D. Isgrigg

This paper, presented at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Society for Pentecostal Studies, will investigate the methodology of tarrying for the baptism in the Holy Spirit as expressed in the testimonies recorded throughout the thirteen existing issues of the Apostolic Faith (1906-1908) of the Azusa Street Mission. In order to extract the “ordinary theology” expressed by this diverse cross-section of early Pentecostals, this study will engage in a history of reception of how Pentecostals received Jesus’ command to “tarry” and how that reception shaped the expectation of the early Pentecostals experience of receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

With its roots in the first century CE and claims to special revelation from various apparitions, the Shepherd of Hermas portended an alternative Christian trajectory to the prevailing Christocentrism. But some in the second, third, and fourth centuries also deemed it compatible with the synoptic Johannine-Pauline metanarrative for Christianity, such that prominent bishops Victorinus, Eusebius, and Athanasius labored to depict it outside the scriptures of the New Testament. This essay reads Freud's relatively overlooked essay, "A Seventeenth-Century Demonological Neurosis" (1923), to consider how psychoanalysis received the Gothic trope of demoniacal possession and made of it an intra-psychic, rather than a religiously spiritual affair. I trace Freud's construction of the demoniacal from the Medieval-metaphysical to the empiricist psychological, and then into the metapsychological, to consider how the demoniacal that Freud wanted to tame always exceeded his disciplining of it. This essay traces the longevity of the Danse macabre as a Gothic trope beginning in the Middle Ages and coming to define a key aesthetic element of the Gothic from the late Eighteenth Century to the present. One of my key concerns is the dancing skeleton as brought to us by Holbein and then transformed in the ballet blanc of Romanticism, through the grotesque of the Modern, and into the postmodern parodic. Central texts are Giselle, Cocteau's The Young Man and Death, and Fosse's All That Jazz.

There is a particular kind of use of slurs in which the negative emotions typically associated with them (hatred, anger) are not present in the occurrence. Even so, these uses still resonate as incorrect or inadequate. This kind of “detached use” is not only an interesting, rarely mentioned phenomenon per se; it also offers some support to a novel approach to slurs based on the sociolinguistic notion of “register”. This paper examines some types of detached uses, extracts some of their essential features and assesses the way the register-based approach to slurs can account for them.

The Theory of Forms is a thread that runs through nearly all of Plato’s intellectual career, being variously elaborated, nudged, and tweaked along the way. The project summarized in this poster argues that there is a serious ambiguity underlying the entire theory, an ambiguity that Plato himself never really noticed; at different times he was pursuing two different understandings of the Forms: as archetypes on the one hand, and as essences on the other. Each of these understandings has serious drawbacks.
