House And Family, Thomas Karli Jan 2019

House And Family, Thomas Karli

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The intention of this research is to establish the idea of a standard Four Person grouping in literature. In many modern stories, the ensemble holds a special place in people’s hearts, especially if they identify specifically with a certain member of the ensemble. This allows friend groups to debate placement and discuss their roles, all while appealing to our sublimated desperation to belong and to be represented. This paper will examine perhaps the most ubiquitous separation of fictional characters into four groups, the sorting of the Hogwarts Houses in Harry Potter. This thesis posits that sorting is based on determinable …

The Mushroom, The Frog, And The Rainbow Of Desire: A Participatory-Psychedelic Spiritual Emergence, Gregg Lahood Jan 2019

The Mushroom, The Frog, And The Rainbow Of Desire: A Participatory-Psychedelic Spiritual Emergence, Gregg Lahood

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This article will explore a spiritual emergency through a myth or fairy tale that emerged at the same time I had a frightening brush with death. Two days before the accident I had ingested psilocybin mushrooms. Michael Washburn, among other transpersonal theorists, will be used to interpret, amplify and re-frame this potential ‘psychotic episode’ with ‘borderline features’ into something more, perhaps, on the threshold of a shamanic initiation in a liminal state. The mythic sequence in my story anticipates the death-rebirth (perinatal pattern) and evolution of consciousness in the LSD research of Stanislav Grof; an evolution given epic participatory elucidation …

An Interview With John Heron: Exploring The Interface Between Cooperative Inquiry And Transpersonal Studies, John Heron, Olga R. Sohmer Jan 2019

An Interview With John Heron: Exploring The Interface Between Cooperative Inquiry And Transpersonal Studies, John Heron, Olga R. Sohmer

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

In this interview, John Heron—the founder of cooperative inquiry (CI; Heron, 1996, 1998)—discusses this experiential, participatory approach to research and learning with participatory research special issue guest editor Olga Sohmer. After presenting a summary of cooperative inquiry, Heron and Sohmer discuss CI in the context of transpersonal studies, including past and prospective future applications. Questioning the emphasis on “trans” in transpersonal, Heron unfolds the three dimensions of human spirituality that CI engages and offers a vision for transpersonal studies in light of CI ideals. Additional themes that are explored include cultivating authentic relationships in CI, the role of the nonhuman …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of Core-Shamanism On A Group Of Westerners: A Brief Research Report, Joanic Masson, Yannick Gounden, Charlemagne Simplice Moukouta, Amal Bernoussi, Antoine Saurat

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

A study was conducted on Western adults who participated in a group undergoing initiation into therapeutic shamanism. It investigated how shamanic work could be a factor triggering changes in persons who never had been previously immersed in such a tradition. Five groups, each composed of six people for a total of 30 participants, met eight times over a period of four months. Analyzing questions asked of the 27 who completed the program resulted in the following identified themes: experiences of the group, trust in the shamanic practitioner, raised awareness of their feeling states, experiences of the shamanic journeys, understanding of …

The Meso-American Goddess Coatlicue: Too Terrifying For The Spaniards, Stanley Krippner Jan 2019

The Meso-American Goddess Coatlicue: Too Terrifying For The Spaniards, Stanley Krippner

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The Coatlicue myth of Meso-America is currently represented by the huge basalt statue of the Earth goddess on display at the National Museum of Anthropology and History in Mexico City. The Spanish invaders who unearthed the statue promptly reburied the goddess, who did not again see the light of day until 1803. Today she commands attention both as a singular work of art and as a reminder that Earth is, at the same time, a loving mother and an insatiable monster, one who ultimately devours those to whom she has given birth. From a postmodern stance, myths are

An Economic Interpretation Of Rhode Island’S 1788 Referendum On The Constitution, Ruth Wallis Herndon, John E. Murray Jan 2019

An Economic Interpretation Of Rhode Island’S 1788 Referendum On The Constitution, Ruth Wallis Herndon, John E. Murray

History Faculty Publications

In their 1788 popular referendum, Rhode Island voters overwhelmingly rejected ratification of the Federal Constitution: 92 percent against and 8 percent for adoption. The town-by-town voter lists, correlated with tax and estate records, show that "yea" voters were significantly wealthier than “nay” voters. Available data also indicates that "yea" wealth was concentrated in personal estate rather than real estate. Both these findings support Charles Beard's original economic interpretation of the Constitution. Our detailed data provides new evidence about town-level voters, supplementing the usual data Beard’s supporters and critics have used from state ratifying conventions and the Philadelphia constitutional convention. We …

Philosophy Of Perception In Hegel, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2019

Philosophy Of Perception In Hegel, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

According to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel in the Introductory Lectures on Aesthetics (The Introduction to Hegel’s Philosophy of Fine Art, 1886), beauty in art is a higher beauty than that of nature, because beauty in art is a product of the mind, or spirit, the intellectual rather than the sensory. In the Symposium of Plato, when the initiate learns to love all beautiful bodies rather than just one body, to “pursue the beauty of form” (210) rather than the beauty of the body, to turn away from the “low and small-minded slav-ery” of love for the beauty of a body, …

Immanuel Kant: Philosophy Of Perception, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2019

Immanuel Kant: Philosophy Of Perception, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

In an early treatise, Attempt to Introduce the Concept of Negative Magnitudes into Philosophy (Versuch, den Begriff der negative Grössen in die Weltweisheit einzuführen, 1763), Immanuel Kant developed a theory about thoughts that are fleeting, negated or cancelled, obscured or darkened. As certain thoughts become clearer, the other thoughts become less clear and more obscured (Verdunkelt). Kant’s concept was influenced by the petites perceptions of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. He invoked Leibniz in establishing that only a small portion of the representations which occur in the soul, as the result of sense perception, are clear and enduring.

The Other Of Jacques Lacan, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2019

The Other Of Jacques Lacan, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

Language in the symbolic of Lacan is defined by the Other, which is the “intersubjectivity of the ‘we’ that it assumes,” as described in Écrits. The subject enters language in relationship to the other in perception, the per-ceived object or person, as recognized by the other. As described by Lacan, “What constitutes me as subject is my question. In order to be recognized by the other, I utter what was only in view of what will be [the future ante-rior of what I shall have been for what I am in the process of becoming].”

The Dream Work Of Sigmund Freud, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2019

The Dream Work Of Sigmund Freud, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

There are many correspondences between Freudian metapsychology and Plotinian metaphysics. Many of Freud’s ideas seem to be rooted in classical philosophy, although acknowledgement is rarely given. Plotinus is a fruitful source for understanding how the mind works. For Freud, unconscious words become conscious images, and unconscious images become conscious words, but these processes do not happen independently of each other. They are wrapped up in a dialectical process that is better understood by reading Plotinus.

Jacques Lacan And Language, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2019

Jacques Lacan And Language, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

According to Jacques Marie Emile Lacan in Écrits, the metonymic chain in language produces signification at a point which is the “anchoring point,” the point de capiton or button hole, which occurs retroactively, after the phrase is completed, and is the point at which the network of signifiers in the metonymic chain corresponds to a network of signifiers in the concept, the idea of mouth or river, for example, and thus accomplishes signification.

The Real And The Gaze Of Jacques Lacan, John Shannon Hendrix Jan 2019

The Real And The Gaze Of Jacques Lacan, John Shannon Hendrix

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

The third category of the psyche in Lacanian psychoanalysis is the real (réel), which is neither imaginary nor symbolic in conscious or unconscious thought, and which is inaccessible to psychoanalysis itself. The real is not reality in either a conceptual or phenomenological sense, which is the symbolic and the imaginary: it is only proposed as an algebraic concept, as it cannot be conceived.

Composition Students’ Opinions Of And Attention To Instructor Feedback, Jennifer M. Cunningham Jan 2019

Composition Students’ Opinions Of And Attention To Instructor Feedback, Jennifer M. Cunningham

Journal of Response to Writing

Reading and attending to feedback has long been established as an important part of the writing process and much pedagogical research discusses how to best provide feedback (Hillocks, 1982; Lipnevich & Smith, 2009; Poulos & Mahony, 2008; Sommers, 1982). Little research exists, however, that investigates the frequency with which students actually read their instructors’ feedback. Guided by three research questions, this study includes empirical survey data collected over two years on a regional campus of a large, Midwestern university with an eight-campus system. This study asks (a) if college composition students read their instructors’ feedback, (b) what might encourage them …

The Movement Of The Spirit: A Constructive Comparison Of Divine Grace In The Theologies Of Paul Tillich And John Wesley, Thomas Albert Barlow Jr Jan 2019

The Movement Of The Spirit: A Constructive Comparison Of Divine Grace In The Theologies Of Paul Tillich And John Wesley, Thomas Albert Barlow Jr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work is a constructive comparison of the ways in which the operations of divine grace resonate in the theologies of John Wesley and Paul Tillich. The primary questions which initially motivated this project: First, how does Tillich's concept of theonomy intersect Wesley's conceptions of the activity of grace? Second, how would those intersections serve to provide a renewed (or clarified) understanding of Wesley's framework of grace? How does Tillich's concept of theonomy, and his method of correlation, inform Wesley's understanding of the activity of grace in human culture? How might gleaned from this comparison inform the work of faith …

Social Media And Communication Centers: An Introduction, Janine Morris, Whitney S. Lehmann, Kevin Dvorak Jan 2019

Social Media And Communication Centers: An Introduction, Janine Morris, Whitney S. Lehmann, Kevin Dvorak

Communication, Media, and Arts Faculty Articles

While many communication centers actively use social media to engage with different publics, there is a need for scholarship addressing how centers can best use social media to enhance student professional development, cross-campus connections, branding, and center visibility. This introduction to the CCJ special section on social media and communication centers offers a rationale for centers’ strategic incorporation of social media platforms. In particular, we discuss the importance of strategic branding, engaging different publics, and using social media to enhance consultant professional development as key features of social media use by communication center professionals.
