Justice Or Pleasure?, Christopher M. Innes Jan 2019

Justice Or Pleasure?, Christopher M. Innes

Philosophy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Dr. Robert Ford confides to Dolores that his father would not agree with his creation of robots for the enjoyment of humans. "My father told me to be satisfied with my lot in life. That the world owed me nothing. And so, I make my own world" ("Contrapasso"). This tells us at once that Dr. Ford's father had a Platonic notion of justice.

The Impact Of The Cold War And The Second Red Scare On The 1952 American Presidential Election, Dana C. Johns Jan 2019

The Impact Of The Cold War And The Second Red Scare On The 1952 American Presidential Election, Dana C. Johns

Online Theses and Dissertations

In the fall of 1952, General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson II faced off in a heated Presidential Election. The reputations of the two men followed them throughout the campaign cycle. Eisenhower was perceived as the General who defeated the Germans on the European front of WWII and was also skilled in managing the press. Stevenson was a relative unknown on the national stage, but was perceived as an intellectual who helped to reform the State Government of Illinois, becoming a favorite candidate of the Democratic Party. The fear of the spread of communism, the looming threat …

Postcards Of The Mind, Robert E. Bieder Jan 2019

Postcards Of The Mind, Robert E. Bieder

Swiss American Historical Society Review

You would think by Autumn one would know

That blue cornflowers close at night,

That raccoons call to each other down at Blossom Creek, .

That dry corn stalks speak of winter to the moon.

In Spring,

l stole swiftly through the flowers· and the corn

To see her,

Whom I chased that summer through the cornfields,

Chased her down the rows that whispered in the night,.

Until I caught her and we fell in love.

Memories, Eva Becsei-Kilborn

Swiss American Historical Society Review

It was in the early 1990's that I first met Bob. He was teaching, first as a Soros Foundation Fellow and then as a Fullbright Professor at the Lajos Kossuth University in Debrecen, a city in eastern Hungary. It was only a couple of years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communism. This was a time when it had finally become possible for Hungarians to travel freely in the world, but in practice very few of us were able to afford to do so.

Out With The Old, In With Revitalized Grammar Through Style-Based Composition Pedagogy, Courtney Forester Jan 2019

Out With The Old, In With Revitalized Grammar Through Style-Based Composition Pedagogy, Courtney Forester

Online Theses and Dissertations

Composition theory has grappled with innumerable pedagogical approaches to grammar studies in the past, many of which yielded questionable results regarding improved clarity and effectiveness of student writing. Grammar is a primary component of spoken and written language; however, its teaching is often overlooked in many first-year writing classrooms. Composition instructors, then, are challenged to design an improved curriculum inclusive of grammar study through its reconciliation with style (Rankin, Amare), which would allow students to explore and experiment with a variety of rhetorical techniques in their compositions with significantly less severe mental detriments to their composing processes and attitudes. Facilitating …

John Wesley Kelchner, Founder Of The Temple Restoration Movement: A Freemason’S Attempt To Build A World Chain Of Solomon’S Temples For Global Peace, Kevin M. Burton Jan 2019

John Wesley Kelchner, Founder Of The Temple Restoration Movement: A Freemason’S Attempt To Build A World Chain Of Solomon’S Temples For Global Peace, Kevin M. Burton

Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)

John Wesley Kelchner (1866–1942) was a visionary promoter, elocutionist, and entertainer in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Freemasons regarded him as an authority on sacred space and a leading expert on the architecture and design of the tabernacle of Moses and King Solomon’s temple. An active promoter of American Orientalism, Kelchner began his career as a Seventh-day Adventist minister who spent tens of thousands of dollars to build an elaborate model of the wilderness tabernacle. He traveled throughout the United States of America, attracting thousands of spectators to local churches, art galleries, and World’s Fairs that featured his models, …

The Christian Debate On Same-Sex Marriage And Taylor’S Immanent And Transcendent Goods: Lessons From Adventist Approaches, David J. Hamstra Jan 2019

The Christian Debate On Same-Sex Marriage And Taylor’S Immanent And Transcendent Goods: Lessons From Adventist Approaches, David J. Hamstra

Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)

Arguments made for and against affirming same-sex marriage in Christian communities rely on typical moral background preconceptions about immanent and transcendent goods identified by Charles Taylor in A Secular Age. Arguments made only in terms of marriage’s immanent goods have the potential to diminish the plausibility of a uniquely Adventist way of imagining the transcendent good: apocalyptic consciousness focused on the imminent-immanent restoration of Eden by Jesus Christ following the second coming. Comparing marriage to divergent sets of Sabbath-keeping practices—those that provide benefits exclusive to this world and those that aim at goods beyond this world—foregrounds the availability of …

Biclustering Readings And Manuscripts Via Non-Negative Matrix Factorization, With Application To The Text Of Jude, Joey Mccollum Jan 2019

Biclustering Readings And Manuscripts Via Non-Negative Matrix Factorization, With Application To The Text Of Jude, Joey Mccollum

Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)

The text-critical practice of grouping witnesses into families or texttypes often faces two obstacles: the methodological question of how exactly to isolate the groups, given the chicken-and-egg relationship between “good” group readings and “good” group manuscripts, and contamination in the manuscript tradition. I introduce non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) as a simple, automated, and efficient solution to both problems. Within minutes, NMF can cluster hundreds of manuscripts and readings simultaneously, producing an output that details potential contamination according to an easy-to-interpret mixture model. I apply this method to Wasserman’s extensive collation of the Epistle of Jude, showing that the resulting clusters …

2019 Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo Family Resource Guide, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2019

2019 Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo Family Resource Guide, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

I designed this 2019 Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Family Resource Guide for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (YDSP), a Puebloan Native American tribal entity located in the Ysleta section of El Paso, Texas. YDSP is one of three federally-recognized Native American tribes, and the only Pueblo, in the State of Texas. The current YDSP population is approximately 4,226 members nationwide. Thirteen miles from downtown El Paso, Ysleta, Texas has been home to the Tigua people for over 300 years. This guide featured phone numbers and addresses of resources, geared toward a senior population of the tribe. As such, the text is …

Girl Gone Missing, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

Book cover and interior template I designed for Girl Gone Missing by Marcie R. Rendon, published by Cinco Puntos Press. Her name is Renee Blackbear, but what most people call the 19-year-old Ojibwe woman is Cash. She lived all her life in Fargo, sister city to Minnesota’s Moorhead, just downriver from the Cities. She has one friend, the sheriff Wheaton. He pulled her from her mother’s wrecked car when she was three. Since then, Cash navigated through foster homes, and at 13 was working farms, driving truck. Wheaton wants her to take hold of her life, signs her up for college. …

Letters To Goya / Titles | Titles / Letters To Goya, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

Why is Carl Jung dancing in the Streets of Death? Because one of his favorites among the living—artist James Magee, the creator of the colossal desert stonework, The Hill, and “the alleged” anima incarnate of the mysterious artist Annabel Livermore—has concocted this brew of poems and letters from the lands of Ordinary and Surreal. The poems flutter like butterflies from his imagination as he creates large steel assemblages. Weirdly, Letters to Goya are found pieces from 1955, from the rickety typewriter of the Duchess of Alba, who in (sur)real life is an old lady who wheel-chairs around the Waikiki Trailer …

The Bird Boys, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

Book cover and interior template I designed for The Bird Boys by Lisa Sandlin, published by Cinco Puntos Press. After a serial killer almost murdered Delpha Wade (The Do-Right, 2015), the county hospital releases her into the handcuffs of the city police for questioning. She killed the man who was trying to kill her, and she is, after all, an ex-con. It’s still Beaumont, 1970s, and mindsets don’t change along the Texas Gulf Coast. Her boss, the neophyte private detective Tom Phelan, awaits her, and soon they are once again in deep shit. It seems like an easy case—one Bird brother …

Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2018 Year-End Report, Anne Giangiulio Jan 2019

Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2018 Year-End Report, Anne Giangiulio

Selected Works Temporary Series

I designed this Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2018 Year-End Report for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, a Puebloan Native American tribal entity located in the Ysleta section of El Paso, Texas. With a color palette of terracotta and dark turquoise, the report features artwork created by artists from the Tigua Indian Cultural Center and the Eagle's Path Culural Gift Shop. These artists' medium is usually pottery, however, under my art direction, to better complement the report format, they used watercolor paper while staying true to the tribe's traditional motifs and aesthetics. The spiral-bound report was expertly printed and assembled by …

Mary Lynn McCree Bryan, Maree de Angury, and Ellen Skerrett, editors. The Selected Papers of Jane Addams, Volume III: Creating Hull-House and an International Presence, 1889-1900. University of Illinois Press, 2019.

The sheer amount of material packed into the nearly 1,000 pages of The Selected Papers of Jane Addams, volume 3, is breath-taking. In this volume the editors, Mary Lynn McCree Bryan, Maree de Angury, and Ellen Skerrett include a generous selection of Addams’s correspondence and writings during the first decade of Hull House’s existence, supplemented by extensive endnotes and commentary. This continues the pattern the editors used in …
