Choosing A Doctoral Program (Chapter 1 Of Prepare, Succeed, Advance: A Guidebook For Getting A Phd In Biblical Studies And Beyond), Nijay K. Gupta

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Excerpt: "Perhaps the greatest challenge for someone wanting to become a professor in biblical studies is selecting the best kind of program and institution at which to study. Furthermore, it is not only important to calculate the various factors involved in making the decision, but also thinking through the process and contingent issues ahead of time. Practically speaking, the advice offered in this book may be utilized and applied more efficiently for someone at the beginning of his or her master's degree (or, even better, during a bachelor's degree) than, for instance, at the stage of actually applying for the …

Melodrama ‘à la française’: Feyder and French cinema of the 1930s

By the end of 1934, Jacques Feyder had led a distinguished career in French silent cinema, had directed a critically acclaimed adaptation of Émile Zola’s Thérèse Raquin (1928) in Berlin, had returned from a three-year contract in Hollywood, had brought Le Grand Jeu to the screen (the greatest box-office success of the 1933–34 season), and appeared to be virtually unstoppable as he proceeded to direct his next film, Pension Mimosas. The film was described by one critic as ‘sans aucun doute l’une des œuvres les plus attendues …

Walking In The Field Of Words, Jane Frazier

Title III Professional Development Reports

Nature poetry or the appearance of nature in poetry is a vast subject. This article deals with the subject of nature poetry in the modern world. Poetry can be a voice for nature and expression of the universal that is in poetry. I have offered a poem of my own, "Alaska, Again" with an explication. The workshop I attended, "Walking in the Field of Words," at the University of Iowa, explored the depths of nature poetry in our modern time.

Questioning The Question: Review Of Modernism And The Harlem Renaissance, Destiny Cornelison Jan 2019

Questioning The Question: Review Of Modernism And The Harlem Renaissance, Destiny Cornelison

The Corinthian

Through my book review of Houston A. Baker, Jr.’s Modernism and the Harlem Renaissance, I examine how well Baker ingeniously transforms the question defining Harlem Renaissance scholarship from “Why did the Harlem Renaissance fail?” to “How did the Harlem Renaissance marshal black aesthetic tradition to develop a form of modernism for the New Negro?” Baker’s bold refusal to limit scholarship to the question being asked engages current readers in a previously unreachable aspect of this momentous movement.

Reviewed Work: Christianizing Egypt. Syncretism And Local Worlds In Late Antiquity By David Frankfurter, Dana Robinson Jan 2019

Reviewed Work: Christianizing Egypt. Syncretism And Local Worlds In Late Antiquity By David Frankfurter, Dana Robinson

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

David Frankfurter’s newest work takes a fresh look at the landscape of local religious activity in late antique Egypt. Frankfurter expands on the theoretical model he offered in Religion in Roman Egypt (Princeton, 1998), which conceptualized the late antique transformations of Egyptian religion as a shift in idiom and social location, from large temple centers to households and local experts, rather than a decline in traditional piety. Here he changes his perspective from the continuity of traditional religion into the Christian era, to examine the creation of a local and regional Christianity in the fifth and sixth centuries.

Arts And Society: A Symbiosis, Mayur Singh Jan 2019

Arts And Society: A Symbiosis, Mayur Singh

Social Space

Looking back in history, it is hard to pinpoint exactly when and why people engaged in the arts. We know that cavemen used it to record and represent objects around them, but also that over time the arts came to be appreciated as a reflection of the skills and creative genius of their creators. The arts has also been used by governments to reflect the views of the state.

Communizing Memory: The Manipulation Of Czech History And Identity, Kasia Majewski Jan 2019

Communizing Memory: The Manipulation Of Czech History And Identity, Kasia Majewski

History Honors Projects

This thesis argues that historical memory plays a crucial role in the politics of nation-building and cultural control, using the context of Czechoslovakia under communism. Combining theoretical approaches drawn from the study of nationalism and memory politics, this thesis examines the power dynamics of glorifying or erasing certain moments in a nation’s past and considers the extent to which history, or a memory of it, defines the national identity. By analyzing the changes in commemoration as Czechoslovakia transitioned into a communist system, the malleability of the past becomes clear, as does the impact of the past upon the present and …
