The Mission Record of the California Indians was in response to a list of questions sent to Alta California in 1811 by the Spanish government of Mexico. The “interrogatorio” was answered at the various missions, the replies collected and prefaced by the president of the mission with a short general statement or abstract of the answers received to each question and then presumably forwarded to Mexico with a copy retained in the archives of the Santa Barbara Mission.

1915 - Monterey County, California - Lands For Wealth, Fruit For Health; Arthur Dunn

Miscellaneous Monterey and San Luis Obispo County Documents and Reports

It was the aim of this booklet to direct attention to the advantages and opportunities found in Monterey County in 1915 for those who were seeking homes. The hope was that the publication would induce further settlement, for there was a vast amount of territory awaiting development. A marketing publication prepared by Sunset Magazine Homeseekers' Bureau for the Monterey County Board of Supervisors, the publication described in detail the bountiful agricultural opportunities, especially when irrigation and pumping were utilized. The document contains a: 1) description of existing irrigation systems, as well as a vision for the future of irrigation and …

1913 - Water Resources Of California, Part Iii, Water-Supply Paper 300

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports

The water available for irrigation and domestic supply was the chief factor in the development of southern California, which then had a population of more than 1,000,000 people. The many mountain streams of California afforded abundant hydroelectric power, the utilization of which in manufacturing enterprises and in transportation had been made possible by the progress of electric-power transmission during the previous decade.

Information concerning the quantity of water carried by the streams had been and would continue to be an important factor in the development of these resources, for the fundamental importance of stream-flow data was so thoroughly recognized that …

The Romantic Socialist Origins Of Humanitarianism, Naomi J. Andrews Jan 2019

The Romantic Socialist Origins Of Humanitarianism, Naomi J. Andrews

History

“Humanitarian” (humanitaire) came into use in French contemporaneously with the emergence of romantic socialism, and in the context of the rebuilding of post-revolutionary French society and its overseas empire beginning in the 1830s. This article excavates this early idea of humanitarianism, documenting an alternative genealogy for the term and its significance that has been overlooked by scholars of both socialism and humanitarianism. This humanitarianism identified a collective humanity as the source of its own salvation, rather than an external, well-meaning benefactor. Unlike liberal models of advocacy, which invoked individualized actors and recipients of their care, socialists privileged solidarity within their …

The Agricultural Deities Of Q ’Eqchi’ Mayas, Tzuultaq’As: Agricultural Rituals As Historical Obligation And Avatar Of The Cultural Reservoir In Rural Lanquín , Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, Yishan Lea

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

This study, based on fieldwork in rural Lanquín, Guatemala, discusses cultural continuity and the sense of historicity through agricultural rituals and worship of the agricultural deity Tzuultaq’as. The place, Lanquín, and the Q’eqchi’ Maya peasant farmers are situated within a two-fold tension and contradiction. Geographically remote in relation to the economic centers in Guatemala, and marginal in infrastructural development, while their cash crop harvests never fail to be effected by the fluctuations of the global market. From the eclectic stance merging both theories of cultural essentialism and constructivism, by juxtaposing the emblematic event of the anti-Monsanto Law movement in 2014 …

Lessons In Productivity: What I Learned By Writing For 30 Minutes A Day, Mary Stenson

Forum Lectures

Too often our scholarly and creative work takes a back seat to components of our jobs with built in accountability like teaching and service. During the fall 2018 semester, I participated in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity's Faculty Success Program. The program emphasizes scholarly productivity and encourages work-life balance. The core component of the program is developing a daily writing practice. The program encourages participants to write for 30 minutes per day. NCFDD founder, Kerry Ann Rockquemore defines writing as "anything between the spark of an idea and a manuscript out the door." In this forum, I …

Analyzing Hermeto Pascoal's Calendário Do Som, Adam Rosado Jan 2019

Analyzing Hermeto Pascoal's Calendário Do Som, Adam Rosado

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hermeto Pascoal is one of the most prolific composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, having composed thousands of pieces across his career. Despite his immense and eclectic catalogue, the current analytical literature on him is comparatively scant, particularly outside of the composer’s native Brazil. In order to represent the diversity of his music, this dissertation studies a collection of his works entitled the Calendário do Som. This collection was an exercise in daily composition and comprises 366 short pieces written from July 23, 1996 to July 23, 1997. Through the analysis of the pieces in this collection, this dissertation …

Overpriced Stamps And Mystery Pies: The Complicated Legacy Of Civil War Sutlers, Savannah Labbe Jan 2019

Overpriced Stamps And Mystery Pies: The Complicated Legacy Of Civil War Sutlers, Savannah Labbe

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

In every story, including ones about historical events, there are people who inevitably end up in the background. These people are ever-present but deemed unimportant to the story, like the Union Army sutler depicted next to his makeshift store above. Sutlers were merchants who would follow the Army around, selling the soldiers things they were not issued but might have wanted, such as paper and envelopes for writing home. The reason why the sutler is often left out of history is not just because they were only indirectly related to the fighting, but also because they were greatly disliked by …
