Nationalism And Globalization: Issues On The Sea Border Beetwen Indonesia And Australia In The Context Of Maritime Sovereignty, Susanto Zuhdi, Noor Fatia Lastika Sari, Linda Sunarti
International Review of Humanities Studies
This paper analyzes transnationalism as the result of globalization in human mobility, which it has summoned new insecurities, especially when international migration as the excess of transnationalism leads to a burst of issues on the sea border, such as influx of migration, asylum seeker, refugees, and even transnational crimes. Thus, it is very important for Indonesia as a growing maritime state to put more attention to the matter, especially to the eastern part of the archipelago, where transnationalism brings different implication toward nationalism of its people. Through historical methodology and perspective, this article discusses relevant issues to be reflected into …

Code Mixing As A Form Of Indonesian Identity Based On The Motto Of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Fajar Muhammad Nugraha
International Review of Humanities Studies
In 2018, the Language Comission of the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) of the Republic of Indonesia has made verification towards all the languages that exists in Indonesia. The verification conducted from 1991 to 2017 resulted in 652 languages to be found. That number still does not include the dialects and their sub-divisions of the 652 languages. Meanwhile, UNESCO recorded 143 languages based on their vitality status. Identity can be interpreted as similarity or unity with others in a certain area or other things (Rummens, 1993: 157-159). "The identity possessed by an individual can be in the form of …

Urban Cultural Omnivores, Upscaling Ethnic Food And Culinary Reproduction In Marco And Suntiang, Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan, Maria Regina Widhiasti, Yudi Bachrioktora, Nila Ayu Utami
International Review of Humanities Studies
Culinary practices have always been considered as social and cultural activities signifying ideas of continuity and transformation regarding one‟s culture and identity. As migration happens, people move from their hometown and recreate familiar food and flavors in their new home. Therefore, the study of culinary practices will reveal the dynamics of constant negotiation between having to trace back the familiar taste, for example by using inherited recipes, with the necessity to innovate and reproduce meals from their hometown with new ingredients and materials found in the new place. Furthermore, in an urban setting that has been heavily influenced with a …

Connecting Bridges Through Theatrical Design: An Examination Of “Asiri Nla” In Performance, Tochukwu J. Okeke
Connecting Bridges Through Theatrical Design: An Examination Of “Asiri Nla” In Performance, Tochukwu J. Okeke
International Review of Humanities Studies
The theatre provides an avenue for the expression of very salient and topical issues about a people through the presentation of performances. These performances, which are often in form of plays, are always created by playwrights and that is why playwrights are said to be the watch dogs of the society because their works x-ray past and present situations while proffering solutions for the future. However, the theatre is a composite art which involves the collaboration of many creative artists: Playwright, Director, Stage Manager, Actor(s), Designer(s), amongst others. The designer(s) are the creative artists that interpret the play in visual …

This study used a qualitative approach with philosophical approach. Documents are used for collecting the data and analysis. Researchers used hermeneutics approach by Hans Georg Gadamer. Research results showed that the unique characteristics of the network …
Translating Code-Switching In The Indonesian Version Of Der Boxer, Dias R. Salim
Translating Code-Switching In The Indonesian Version Of Der Boxer, Dias R. Salim
International Review of Humanities Studies
Code-switching is the use of more than one language in an utterance. Within a narrative work like comics, code-switching can be used to show exoticism, character identity, or dramatic effect. Translating such a speech pattern poses a challenge to a translator. This paper discusses how a translator covert speeches that code-switch to three foreign languages – English, Yiddish, and Hebrew – in the German comic der Boxer by Reinhard Kleist into Indonesian. Translation units such as words, phrases, and sentences in the the target text will be compared to its counterparts in the source text to note the procedures used …
Indonesia And Central Asia: Romanticizing Authoritarian Regime In The Past?, Mochamad Aviandy
Indonesia And Central Asia: Romanticizing Authoritarian Regime In The Past?, Mochamad Aviandy
International Review of Humanities Studies
Even though countries in Central Asia and Indonesia seem to be unrelated, both actually have experienced authoritarian regime and implemented decentralization system after that regime collapsed. Nevertheless, decentralization along with non-authoritarian regime does not automatically bring the desired good result since a new authoritarian regime based on decentralization appears. As a result, the citizens long for the welfare of the centralism system. Before talking further about the comparison of both regions, it is better to have a good understanding of each region.

Jasmine’S Fail Attempt To Achieve ‘Transcendence’ As A Form Of Her Internalization As ‘The Other’ In Blue Jasmine (2013), Livina Veneralda, Adriana Rahajeng Mintarsih
International Review of Humanities Studies
Although there have been more Hollywood movies having their stories centered on female characters, their representation in Hollywood cinema is still problematic as most of these female characters do not become subjects in their own stories. They often internalize the notion of women as the Other. According to Beauvoir (2010), since women are deemed to be the Other, they become inessential part of the society. In the movie Blue Jasmine (2013), Jasmine has no power to design and lead her future as she subjugates herself to men. Then when she tries to free herself from this situation, she experiences oppression …
A Project Of Constructing A Contemporary Jewish Identity In Rabinovici’S Novel Suche Nach M, Lisda Liyanti
A Project Of Constructing A Contemporary Jewish Identity In Rabinovici’S Novel Suche Nach M, Lisda Liyanti
International Review of Humanities Studies
Attitude to the Nazi past turns to its new phase in the 1980s, after the time of repressing, silent and mourning brings the new discourse in talking about the Holocaust. It was a tendency of "denying" the Holocaust and new anti semitism movement. In the 90s, Jewish authors confirm their position as „self determined agents' in the literary and political area. One of them is Doron Rabinovici, an Austrian Jewish author who wrote the novel Suche Nach M in engaging on the project of constructing a contemporary Jewish identity. In this article, the question of how Robinovici proposes the construction …

Bentham And The “Famous Footnote”, Randall Otto
Bentham And The “Famous Footnote”, Randall Otto
Between the Species
It is the contention of this paper that animal liberationists have misconstrued and misused Bentham’s “famous footnote” as an advocacy of species equivalency of interests, as though he were an incipient opponent of what has come to be known as “speciesism.” The context of Bentham’s footnote was of mistreatment of others that are capable of feeling pain. He was advocating in the footnote for laws that would end what he viewed as instances of cruelty toward animals. He was not advocating for vegetarianism or an end to killing animals where they can be of benefit to human beings, where “we …

Self Storage: A Contemporary Archaeology Of Domestic Interiority, Emma Filippides
Self Storage: A Contemporary Archaeology Of Domestic Interiority, Emma Filippides
Interiority
This architectural historical study aims to interrogate rituals of contemporary inhabitation in the United Kingdom by tracing the rise of the self storage facility. While the proliferation of domestic self storage in the UK is derived from a web of correlations, this research considers self storage as a lens through which the subjective experience of inhabiting the neoliberal city, may be understood. Drawing from archaeological methods to conduct a material study of the contents of abandoned storage units, this study engages specifically with self storage as a long-term solution to domestic storage inadequacies. The material and theoretical engagements of this …
Contested Interiority: Sense Of Outsideness/Insideness Conveyed Through Everyday Interactions With University Campus Doors, Lisa Stafford
Contested Interiority: Sense Of Outsideness/Insideness Conveyed Through Everyday Interactions With University Campus Doors, Lisa Stafford
Interiority
Our sense of place in the world is mediated through our everyday interactions with both people and space (Seamon, 1985). Everydayness is one of the most profound levels and shapers of human experience, yet too often this level of relation is overlooked and taken for granted in the design of environments (Dyck, 2005; Tuan, 1977). In this article, I present a first-person phenomenological account of my everyday interactions with doors on a university campus to uncover contested notions of interiority. My body-space routines reveal how a sense of outsideness/insideness is controlled through my interactions with objects such as doors, door …

Material Atmospheres: Theorising Recent Shifts In Interior Visualisation, Gregory Marinic
Interiority
Much like Walter Benjamin's analysis of the Parisian arcades during the interwar years of the early 20th century, emerging methods of seeing interior spaces reveal a deeper gaze into the contextual, material, and phenomenological conditions that produce more nuanced visions of interiority. A collective consciousness surrounding these constructed narratives is reflected in charged associations with the most salient imperatives of our time—globalisation, resource depletion, ecological degradation, and political instability—as well as their corresponding effects on the built environment. These visual provocations have incrementally percolated up to embody an expanding field of design activism for educators, theorists, practitioners, and students. How …
Interior Decoration To Exterior Surface: The Beleaguered Relief, Susan Hedges
Interior Decoration To Exterior Surface: The Beleaguered Relief, Susan Hedges
Interiority
Surface articulation is a critical issue for interior architecture, and this paper sees the wall as a point of intersection where art and structure may converge and collide. A place of experimentation and a site of performance, built volumes and surface embellishments blur and reinforce edge conditions and ornament as embellishment and essential structure merge.
This paper explores a sculptural relief Copper Crystals (1965) constructed by Jim Allen for the ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries) House (1964) situated at 61 Molesworth Street in Wellington, New Zealand. Following the building's failure, due to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, the sculptural relief survived a …
Interiority In Everyday Space: A Dialogue Between Materiality And Occupation, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Interiority In Everyday Space: A Dialogue Between Materiality And Occupation, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo
Interiority
Everyday space is a setting where ordinary acts, activities and events take place. It is interesting to examine closely how interiority is defined, understood and manifested in everyday space as a way to understand the inhabitation of the interior. The interiority of everyday space is defined not only by occupation but also through materiality. This issue of Interiority presents articles that address the relationships between interior materiality and different perceptual constructs and experiences of architectural space as inherent in the occupation of the everyday space.
Designing The Threshold: A Close Reading Of Olafur Eliasson’S Approach To ‘Inside’ And ‘Outside’, Demet Dincer, Thea Brejzek, Lawrence Wallen
Designing The Threshold: A Close Reading Of Olafur Eliasson’S Approach To ‘Inside’ And ‘Outside’, Demet Dincer, Thea Brejzek, Lawrence Wallen
Interiority
This article discusses Icelandic installation artist Olafur Eliasson’s approach of the threshold as a productive liminal space rather than as a static boundary between the inside and the outside. Often defined as the physical division between the interior and the exterior in architecture, the authors argue that by looking at Eliasson’s works in detail, the threshold’s inherent capacity of comprising a dynamic dialogue between inside and outside where one is determined by the other unfolds. This paper proposes that designing the relationships between inside and outside involves subtle renegotiations and redefinitions of conventionalised notions of their boundaries and a resultant …
Performative Interiors: Terminological And Theoretical Reflections On The Term 'Performative', Ayman Kassem
Performative Interiors: Terminological And Theoretical Reflections On The Term 'Performative', Ayman Kassem
Interiority
‘Performative’ is an emerging term in architectural discourse. The word ‘performative’ is able to describe spatial qualities and design approaches. The term is mostly linked to the concepts of open-form, and flexibility which are characters that give the spatial design a strategic aspect as the ability to anticipate and host predicted and unpredicted occurrences, and to adjust to future changes, which also gives architecture the character of an unfolding ‘event’ in time and in space. This paper seeks to investigate the terminological and the theoretical dimensions of the term ‘performative.’
