Hundred Years Since Yugoslavia’S Birth: Lesson On Nationalism, Balkanization, And Religion In Europe’S Periphery, Vjekoslav Perica
Hundred Years Since Yugoslavia’S Birth: Lesson On Nationalism, Balkanization, And Religion In Europe’S Periphery, Vjekoslav Perica
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
In 2018, historians were marking the one hundredth anniversary of the foundation of a nation-state in southeastern Europe remembered as Yugoslavia–the country of Southern Slavs. The multi-ethnic nation used to connect several European ethnic groups of the shared Slavonic ancestry yet were divided by three major religions and mutually exclusive ethnic nationalist ideologies. The Yugoslav national project lasted seven decades under various regime types in a sensitive balance often disturbed by wars. In the 20th century alone, the territory of the former Yugoslavia saw six major wars, three cycles of ethnic cleansing and genocide, and about fifteen various states and …

The Theological Effort Of Hafiz Ali Of Korcha, Ismail Bardhi
The Theological Effort Of Hafiz Ali Of Korcha, Ismail Bardhi
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Hafiz Ali Korcha's work and activities in the fields of theology, literature, and education can be viewed, from the historical-theological perspective, as a reflection of his theological effort. This is the central category, containing as it does all of Korcha's cognitive-theoretical, axiological, and cultural-theological speculations, as well as his views on science, literature, cultural policy, and religion. In his entire theological opus, one feels the fragrance of the Qur'an and of the life of Prophet Muhammad a.s. Theological effort, as understood by Korcha, differs from theology in that it is the source of theologizing and is a primordial tendency of …

"I Dare Not Venture A Judgement”: Spirituality And The Postsecular In Hogg’S Confessions, Conor Bruce Hilton
"I Dare Not Venture A Judgement”: Spirituality And The Postsecular In Hogg’S Confessions, Conor Bruce Hilton
Theses and Dissertations
Reading James Hogg’s 1824 novel The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner through a postsecular lens provides a new framework for spirituality. This framework establishes spirituality as a place of tension and uncertainty between the text’s main ideologies—Enlightenment rationality and religious, specifically Calvinist, fanaticism. The text explores this place of tension through its doubled narrative structure and by demonstrating the crisis of faith that the fictional Editor of the text undergoes. Confessions brings a compelling new paradigm to discussions of the postsecular that allows insight into the complex intersections of Enlightenment rationality and empiricism as well as religious …
Using A Content Management System For Student Digital Humanities Projects: A Pilot Run, Amy E. Gay
Using A Content Management System For Student Digital Humanities Projects: A Pilot Run, Amy E. Gay
Library Scholarship
Content management systems (CMS), a phrase that is defined pretty much how it reads--they are systems that manage digital content. If you have worked within a library’s archives, special collections, history and genealogy department, or within museums, you have probably used one either on the front end or managed digital collections on the backend. For this use case, I will share a pilot project using a newly developed content management system, Omeka S, for an undergraduate History class’ digital humanities projects.

Cambodian And Thai Political Actors Interest In Preah Vihear Temple Border Conflict In 2008-2011, Indah Merdeka Putri, Ali Muhyidin
Jurnal Politik
This paper examines how domestic interest of political actors in particular country may spark conflict and create reconciliation with other country. The case of the Preah Vihear border temple dispute between Cambodia and Thailand in 2008-2011 shows that distinctive political interest within each country has made the the relation of both countries in up and down situation, in term of escalating conflict or initiating reconciliation, in that period of time. By discussing the interest of Cambodia’s political actor represented by Prime Minister Hun Sen with the Cambodian’s People Party (CPP) and Thailand’s elites represented by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva with …
Ideology And Pragmatism: Discourse Factors In Infrastructure Development In Indonesia’S Jokowi-Jk Era, Fredick Boven Ekayanta
Ideology And Pragmatism: Discourse Factors In Infrastructure Development In Indonesia’S Jokowi-Jk Era, Fredick Boven Ekayanta
Jurnal Politik
The discussion about development discourse in a country talking about how an idea affect economic policies. In Indonesia, the development discourse continues to change depending on the ruling regime. After the reformation, the dominant discourse is a neoliberal one that minimizes the role of the state in development. During the reign of Jokowi-JK, however, the role of the state strengthened. The government plans to build a massive infrastructure of the physical economy. The government legitimized its choice of action as the implementation of the Pancasila and Trisakti ideologies. Using the theories of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, this article argues …

Confucian Role Ethics: Issues Of Naming, Translation, And Interpretation, Sarah Mattice
Confucian Role Ethics: Issues Of Naming, Translation, And Interpretation, Sarah Mattice
Showcase of Faculty Scholarly & Creative Activity
This chapter explores the arguments behind considering Confucian ethics as a kind of "role ethics", as articulated by Roger Ames and others. I see at least three sets of concerns that animate the reasoning behind Confucian role ethics: naming, translation, and interpretation. In terms of naming, I discuss this project as an example of zhengming 正名, or proper naming, which is a common Confucian ethical project. Confucian thinkers are often preoccupied with appropriate categorization, one species of which is naming. The naming of Confucian ethics as role ethics, I argue, is not only consistent with but is situated in a …

What The Wasp Said, Hugh C. Culik
What The Wasp Said, Hugh C. Culik
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
On a bright spring day, the ancient building housing the English and Logic Departments begins to slowly collapse on itself, trapping McMann (an inept English professor) and Lucy Curt (a logician) in the office they share. As the Fibonacci repetitions of the building’s brickwork slowly peel away, McMann seizes the moment to tell Lucy stories about skunks, stories whose recurrent pattern finally leads to the unrecognized connection between a “message” burned into his ear by a wasp and the orderly universe for which he cannot find a language. At last, he looks up only to see Lucy descending a ladder, …

A Selection Of Poems From Ode To Numbers, Sarah Glaz
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
My first poetry collection, Ode to Numbers, was published by Antrim House in September 2017 (http://www.antrimhousebooks.com/glaz.html). The book contains poems written over a quarter of a century and inspired by mathematics and my life as a mathematician. The poems in this folder are a small selection from the book—a series of seven poems focusing on events from the history of mathematics.

Book Review: Ode To Numbers: Poems By Sarah Glaz, Eveline Pye
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This review explores the issues surrounding mathematics poetry and its role in challenging stereotypes about mathematics and mathematicians. In Ode to Numbers Sarah Glaz takes us from her childhood in Romania to her work as a professor at the University of Connecticut in the USA, with the constant thread of her love of mathematics. It is an intense emotional journey through time and place, arriving at mature reflection. The reader will encounter a wide range of poetic forms; some traditional, others inspired by mathematics. Glaz writes with originality, courage, insight, and generosity and this collection secures her reputation as an …
Academia Will Not Save You: Stories Of Being Continually “Underrepresented”, Lynette Deaun Guzmán
Academia Will Not Save You: Stories Of Being Continually “Underrepresented”, Lynette Deaun Guzmán
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
My entire life I have had to navigate educational structures labeled (by other people) as “underrepresented” in my fields—mathematics and mathematics education. As many people who are similarly labeled in this way know, this meant I had to navigate oppressive structures that positioned me as lesser (e.g., white supremacy, patriarchy). Making sense of these repeated interactions, I wrote my dissertation as a series of three articles, each prefaced with an essay that situated a broader social, cultural, and political context and also connected to my lived experiences navigating academia. These essays were some of my most personal academic writing, and …
Teaching History Of Mathematics: A Dialogue, Benjamin Braun, Eric Kahn
Teaching History Of Mathematics: A Dialogue, Benjamin Braun, Eric Kahn
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Many colleges and universities offer a course in the history of mathematics. While the potential benefits for students taking such a course might be apparent, it is often less clear how teaching a history of mathematics course can be a transformational experience for faculty. We present a dialogue between the authors regarding their experiences teaching history of mathematics courses, including their motivation for doing so, the impact these experiences have had on their classroom practices and assessment methods, and the opportunities history of mathematics courses offer for incorporating social justice, equity, and inclusion into the study of mathematics. Our goal …
Finding Teaching Inspiration From Gorgias: Mathematics Lessons From A Sophist, Ann L. Von Mehren
Finding Teaching Inspiration From Gorgias: Mathematics Lessons From A Sophist, Ann L. Von Mehren
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
The logos or rational language of the fifth-century BCE teacher, Gorgias, as contained in the fragment On the Nonexistent, challenges a reader to understand the relationship between the existent and the nonexistent; yet the text also offers an accessible idea of logos. Inspired by William M. Priestley's approach to the study of logos through ratios, and by Ivor Grattan-Guinness's recommendation to broaden the study of historical texts in the history of mathematics and mathematics education, and pursue their significance in a heritage sense, this article suggests that this ancient non-mathematics text by Gorgias may inspire and refresh elementary mathematics educators' …
On Mathematical Conjectures And Counterexamples, Ali Barahmand
On Mathematical Conjectures And Counterexamples, Ali Barahmand
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This article provides an overview of the limitations of checking out a few cases to prove conjectures in mathematics. To that end, I present a purposeful collection of number-theoretic conjectures where extensive checking of cases has found counterexamples, with emphasis on the historical backgrounds. Historical examples of long-term attempts to prove or disprove such conjectures could help individuals to realize more deeply that a limited number of observations does not guarantee the correctness of a conjecture, even though there may be many examples in its favor.
Cartegory Theory: Framing Aesthetics Of Mathematics, Maria Mannone
Cartegory Theory: Framing Aesthetics Of Mathematics, Maria Mannone
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Mathematics can help investigate hidden patterns and structures in music and visual arts. Also, math in and of itself possesses an intrinsic beauty. We can explore such a specific beauty through the comparison of objects and processes in math with objects and processes in the arts. Recent experimental studies investigate the aesthetics of mathematical proofs compared to those of music. We can contextualize these studies within the framework of category theory applied to the arts (cARTegory theory), thanks to the helpfulness of categories for the analysis of transformations and transformations of transformations. This approach can be effective for the pedagogy …
Fun With Math On Valentine's Day, Kristin T. Kennedy
Fun With Math On Valentine's Day, Kristin T. Kennedy
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
This article describes various love-themed activities the department of mathematics at Bryant University hosted during a college-wide celebration of love called "The Arts and Science of Love", held during Valentine's Day 2018. Inspired by Susan D'Agustino's article "To Fall in Love with Math, Do This" [1], Bryant mathematicians came up with many creative and engaging activities that brought mathematics and its practitioners closer to the students on campus. Much fun was had.
