Mysterious Moralism: Anthony Comstock’S Crusade Against Female Sexuality And Society’S Resistance Against Censorship And Enforced Christian Values, Gabriella Grilla Feb 2019

Mysterious Moralism: Anthony Comstock’S Crusade Against Female Sexuality And Society’S Resistance Against Censorship And Enforced Christian Values, Gabriella Grilla

Of Life and History

The Gilded Age is often the forgotten age of American history, a time marked by the formation of labor unions, the Chicago World’s Fair, and anarchists. Within this flyover zone of history is Anthony Comstock, a devoutly religious man who despised all things obscene and lustful. On his quest to eliminate vice from American culture Comstock played the upper class against the lower, and pit everyone against women. Claiming to be thinking only of the children, Comstock attempted to repress women back to the home and to Puritanical values. He believed women and new lax gender roles were disintegrating American …

To Green Or Not To Green?: A Study On Consumer Behavior And Ethically Produced Fashion, Gretchen Muller Feb 2019

To Green Or Not To Green?: A Study On Consumer Behavior And Ethically Produced Fashion, Gretchen Muller

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

For a long time, production in the fashion industry wasn’t given a second thought when consumers would purchase fashion goods. Little about how the industry produced its goods was public knowledge, so consumers didn’t worry about the environmental implications of the products they were purchasing. In today’s world, where companies are required to be more transparent and have social responsibility, consumers are more knowledgeable (Shen, et al.; Grappi, et al.; Chan and Wong). This widespread knowledge seems to be affecting the way people purchase fashion. This paper examines how (and if) a consumer base knowledgeable about environmental pollution, caused by …

Diachronics Of Redemption: A Systems Theoretic View Of Rosenzweig’S Star, Martin Zwick Feb 2019

Diachronics Of Redemption: A Systems Theoretic View Of Rosenzweig’S Star, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper explores Rosenzweig’s idea of Redemption by an interpretative examination of the conceptual structures of the Star. These structures, in which Redemption is integrated with the other two relations, Creation and Revelation, and with the three elements of God, World, and Human, are examined from the perspective of contemporary systems theory. Moses, Pollock, and others have noted the systematic character of the Star. While “systematic” does not necessarily mean “systems-theoretic,” the philosophical theology of the Star and its core hexad of elements and relations exemplify many ideas salient in the systems theory literature. The hexadic star itself fits the …

The Social Gospel Movement And Adventism From Late Ninteenth To Early Twentieth Century In The United States, Michelet William Feb 2019

The Social Gospel Movement And Adventism From Late Ninteenth To Early Twentieth Century In The United States, Michelet William

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

The Social Gospel is a religious social-reform movement prominent in the United States from about 1870 to 1920. Advocates of the movement interpreted the Kingdom of God as requiring social as well as individual salvation and sought the betterment of industrialized society through application of the biblical principles of charity and justice. The Social Gospel is rooted in American Protestant liberalism, which was largely influenced by the ideologies of the Progressive Era during late nineteenth century. The Seventh-day Adventist Church, while distancing itself from the Social Gospel mainly due to theological reasons, had fought for social issues of its time …

What Was So Attractive In Artemis/Diana Worship, And What Was The Rationale For Christians Not To Follow Pagan Ideology?, Georg Filippou Feb 2019

What Was So Attractive In Artemis/Diana Worship, And What Was The Rationale For Christians Not To Follow Pagan Ideology?, Georg Filippou

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

The last few decades of archaeological research in Ephesus have revealed new insights into the context of Paul’s writings. In the past many commentators have assumed that the Artemis cult was sex-saturated at the time of Paul, and therefore interpreted the biblical texts from that perspective. However, more recent scholarship has suggested the opposite. Mystery religions elevated the status of women. In the creation narrative of Artemis, the woman was born first. In refraining from everything that is part of a marriage, women could reach salvation. It is therefore not surprising that Paul addressed issues connected to women (creation, marriage, …

Ethical Implications Of The Academic Battle Between Evolutionists And Interventionists In The Search For Truth About Origins, Mihai Bijacu Feb 2019

Ethical Implications Of The Academic Battle Between Evolutionists And Interventionists In The Search For Truth About Origins, Mihai Bijacu

Seminary Scholarship Symposium

In the outgoing discussion over the very hot topic of the evolution - creation controversy, the two sides have often forgotten that the ultimate goal is to find out the truth about origins and not to defeat the opponent. This paper explores four types of misconducts when dealing with origins (ad hominem attacks, straw man arguments, misrepresenting challenges and passing opinions as facts) and suggests ways of dealing with them in order to foster a sound environment for arguments on both sides to be heard faithfully and to promote the search for truth.

A Woman Wielding Words: The Role Of The Woman-Poet And Woman-Prophet Fedelm In The Táin Bó Cúailnge, Laura Steblay Feb 2019

A Woman Wielding Words: The Role Of The Woman-Poet And Woman-Prophet Fedelm In The Táin Bó Cúailnge, Laura Steblay

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

The character Fedelm is the only woman described as a poet in the early Irish epic the Táin Bó Cúailnge, and her prophecy which tells of the boy-hero Cúchulainn commences the tale. This paper examines Fedelm’s presence in the tale as a prophetic force in her role as a woman-poet and woman-prophet, as a literary reflection of Cúchulainn’s mentor Scathach, and as a visual parallel to Cúchulainn himself. Ultimately, it is not only Fedelm’s prediction that establishes the legendary Cúchulainn’s place in the narrative, but her very presence as a character provides a literary embodiment of her prophecy.

Fairy In The Faerie Queene: Making Elizabeth Irish, Sarah Severson Feb 2019

Fairy In The Faerie Queene: Making Elizabeth Irish, Sarah Severson

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Queen Elizabeth I defied the societal and political expectations of her time by remaining an unmarried, female monarch for the entirety of her rule. She was glorified by many, including Edmund Spenser, who dedicated his epic poem The Faerie Queene to her. Yet tensions surrounding Queen Elizabeth’s unmarried, powerful status infiltrate Spenser’s work through the repeated loss of female power, which seems in conflict with Spenser’s supposed idealization of his monarch. Curiously, various female figures in The Faerie Queene can be linked to Irish sovereignty goddesses, female figures who have power over Irish land and transfer this power to men …

Conclaves In The Modern Papacy: Factors That Influence The Elections Of Popes (1846-Present), Jair Peltier Feb 2019

Conclaves In The Modern Papacy: Factors That Influence The Elections Of Popes (1846-Present), Jair Peltier

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

This research paper seeks to identify and explain external and internal factors, including international conflict, ecclesiastical norms, and the actions, styles, and reputations of popes in their life times, in the elections of popes in the Roman Catholic Church from 1846 to 2013.

Using historical context is important in identifying the international, social, and political climate that the conclaves were held in. Analyzing the papacies of the individual popes is another important aspect of this research. One pontificate begins when another ends. It would therefore be unproductive to disregard the successes and shortcomings of the popes after their elections. The …

A Giant Problem In Book Five Of The Faerie Queene, Corinne Mccumber Feb 2019

A Giant Problem In Book Five Of The Faerie Queene, Corinne Mccumber

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

In Book Five of The Faerie Queene, Edmund Spenser has no qualms about killing giants, who appear at multiple points in the text. Spenser has his narrator explicitly call three foes giants: the Egalitarian “Gyant,” (V.ii.30.1), Geryoneo (V.xi.9.5), and Grantorto (V.xii.15.2). Other giants weave through the text, and all perish--though their deaths signal more than simple defeat in combat. Previous scholarly examinations have linked giants to classical and biblical usurpers of both God and the State. Yet giants are also, as I show, uniquely connected to Ireland. Because of this connection, I argue that the giants of Book Five are …

Bodies, Blood, And Manure: The Rhetoric Of Nutrient Cycling In Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene And A View Of The State Of Ireland, Bailey Kemp Feb 2019

Bodies, Blood, And Manure: The Rhetoric Of Nutrient Cycling In Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene And A View Of The State Of Ireland, Bailey Kemp

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

Although the term “ecology” did not exist when Edmund Spenser was writing, forms of ecological understanding were present during Spenser’s time. Therefore, the modern phrase “nutrient cycling” provides a useful vocabulary with which to discuss two of Spenser’s most prominent works: The Faerie Queene and A View of the State of Ireland. Throughout these texts, Spenser exhibits an awareness of the cyclical patterns that govern the natural world, especially regarding the rich Irish soil. While emphasizing the fertility of the Irish landscape serves to advance his colonial agenda, Spenser’s apparent ecological awareness also poses a paradox: the valuable soil …

The Expression Of Modality In Iranian Sign Language (Zei), Sara Siyavoshi Feb 2019

The Expression Of Modality In Iranian Sign Language (Zei), Sara Siyavoshi

Linguistics ETDs

This dissertation uses data from Zaban Eshareh Irani, Iranian Sign Language, to investigate the linguistic strategies for the expression of modality in this language. Manual and facial markers of modality are recognized and analyzed based on their form and the semantic domain each covers. Vander Auwera and Plungian (1998) offered a semantic map for categorization of different modals across languages. According to their framework, modality can be classified into two vast domains of possibility and necessity. Based on the source of the modal force then, each modality domain is categorized into three groups of participant-external, participant-internal and epistemic. In this …
