The Poetic Horn: Rethinking Expressive Intent In Schumann's Adagio Und Allegro, Op. 70, Samantha Duhé Mar 2019

The Poetic Horn: Rethinking Expressive Intent In Schumann's Adagio Und Allegro, Op. 70, Samantha Duhé

Graduate Student Research Symposium

At first glance, Robert Schumann’s Adagio und Allegro for horn and piano, Op. 70 appears to be simply one showpiece out of many the composer wrote in his later years to appeal to a middle class market of amateur musicians. The piece is often dismissed as such, and as a result, scholars tend to exclude it from their discourse on Schumann’s expressive musical techniques. Adagio und Allegro is yet to have been investigated in light of this discourse. One of the composer’s musical devices, recognized by Berthold Hoeckner (1997), is to mimic the sound of a tone fading into the …

Engaging Visitors With Conservation: The Key To Museum Sustainability, Megan Crutcher Mar 2019

Engaging Visitors With Conservation: The Key To Museum Sustainability, Megan Crutcher

Graduate Student Research Symposium

What is museum conservation and why does it matter? Increasingly, museum professionals are having to answer this question not only for themselves, but for the public as well. I argue that conservation’s definition is twofold, encompassing the actual work, as well as public engagement and presentation. First, conservation is the act of preserving and protecting cultural heritage to improve its structural integrity and historical significance. Second, conservation’s ultimate effectiveness lies in its ability to leave the public informed and passionate. Two of the best examples of these programs are the conservation of the Star Spangled Banner at the Smithsonian in …

"Returning To My Father" : A Decolonial Reading Of Lk 15:11-32 Towards A Reconstruction Of African Theological Anthropology For Authentic Sacramental Ethics Via Indigenous Divinity Graduate Schools., Besem Etchi

Graduate Student Research Symposium

This paper makes three hermeneutical contributions: (1) By uncovering the Indigenous Norse zero-point subtext structuring today's Catholic liturgy, the paper constructs ancestral primacy as the delinking methodology for indigeniztion; (2) By emphasizing ritual as transformative technology for identity and relationship, in its wielding of neurolinguistic programming, the paper establishes indigenous epistemology as the proper spatial locus for any symbolic exchange that emerges authentic sacramental ethics; (3) By discussing the possibilities that creating indigenous Divinity graduate schools in African countries offers, a path of realizing sociopolitical stability and harmony in African states as a communal body is systematized.

With the ritual …

Are We Diluting History?, Nicole Slaven Mar 2019

Are We Diluting History?, Nicole Slaven

Graduate Student Research Symposium

Historical markers are everywhere and therefore have the potential to transmit history to a wide range of audiences. But is the history they are promoting always “valid” history? Through this research project, I hope to show trends in the validity of historical markers, how time has had an effect on the historical significance of markers, and how they correlate to the median income of the areas where they are erected.

This research project will use the Ohio Historical Marker program for its case study. I will use a random sampling of 20-25% of the markers (approximately 300) and test them …

Meeting Point: Partner Dancing As Couple's Therapy, Rami Eckhaus Mar 2019

Meeting Point: Partner Dancing As Couple's Therapy, Rami Eckhaus

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This dissertation research explored the experience of partner dancing as a therapeutic process that reflects upon the dynamics and interactions of couples who are in the process of couple's therapy. The research also aimed to gain insight on the ways in which the experience of partner dancing can support these couples' therapeutic processes. Partner dancing is a dance-form that is based on the interaction between two individuals. Such interaction requires the dancing couples to communicate on many levels that may uncover layers of their relational dynamics. In this research, five couples who were undergoing couple's therapy were asked to participate …

Argumentative Rhetoric And Logical Reasoning As Engagement With Being, Jeremy Barris Mar 2019

Argumentative Rhetoric And Logical Reasoning As Engagement With Being, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

The paper tries to show that when the deepest or foundational aspects of truth are at issue, both consequentially logical argument and rhetoric that aims to establish truth or justified conviction must engage with the being, or the irreplaceable particularity, of its audience’s members and also that of the arguer, what we refer to in ordinary language as who the person is. Beyond the existing discussion of existential rhetoric, the paper argues that this engagement with being is necessary to establish not only truth that directly concerns or turns on the arguer’s and audience’s being, but also truth or justification …

An Archive Of Pain: In Queer Suicide's Cultural Wake, Evan Schares Mar 2019

An Archive Of Pain: In Queer Suicide's Cultural Wake, Evan Schares

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I argue that queer death is a chief site of political struggle over gender, race, and sexuality in contemporary culture. I consider myriad archives in the aftermath of three queer suicides, an aggregate of discourses I call cultural wakes, to examine how white affective investments circulate around the forces of racism, sexism, and citizenship. I place in situ the trauma of queer pain and loss against the global backdrop of public emotionality.

"I Think Of The Future": The Long 1850s And The Origins Of The Americanization Of The World, Joshua Taylor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While historians often point to the rise of the United States as a major global player and technological leader on the world stage in the 1890s and early 1900s, this study argues it was the 1850s, not the 1890s, that this transition occurred. It utilizes transnational methodologies to analyze European perceptions of the United States, American international businessmen, and new ways Americans thought and talked about their place in the world. During the 1850s, European travelers to the United States began to recognize the young nation was taking the lead in technological innovation, while American businessmen like Samuel Colt began …

INTRODUCTION

Now, at the end of three years of graduate school, is a time for reflection—and a time to piece together a narrative of how I got to now. In our first semester here, we were given an assignment in a drawing class to gather pictures, text, and objects that informed or inspired our studio practice, a Collectanea. At the end of that semester, we documented and compiled our collection into a photo book—an atlas of our thoughts and observations. That book became the bones of the work I have made over these last three years. New thoughts and …

“Divine Hunger”: Contextualizing Cannibalism In Slavenka Drakulić’S The Taste Of A Man, Carol A. Leibiger

Posters and Presentations

Slavenka Drakulić’s novel of 1995, Božanska glad or “divine hunger” (English title: The Taste of a Man) tells the story of Tereza, a Polish graduate student and poet, and José, a Brazilian anthropologist, who engage in a brief, passionate love affair while both are on research fellowships in New York City. José’s research focuses on the notorious episode of cannibalism by a Chilean rugby team that crash-landed in the Andes Mountains in 1972. Eating and sex are Tereza and José’s primary occupations during their three months together, as the partners seem to consume one another in a seemingly endless array …
