"The Most Difficult Vote": Post-Roe Abortion Politics In Oregon, 1973-2001, Tanya Trangia Monthey Mar 2019

"The Most Difficult Vote": Post-Roe Abortion Politics In Oregon, 1973-2001, Tanya Trangia Monthey

Dissertations and Theses

The abortion debate in the United States has come to split the contemporary electorate among party lines. Since the late 1970s, the Republican Party has taken a stand against abortion and has worked through various routes of legislation to pass restrictions on access to the procedure. Oregon however, provides a different interpretation of this partisan debate. Though Oregon has seen both Republican and Democratic leadership in all houses of state government and pro-life conservative groups have lobbied to restrict the procedure, no abortion restriction has been passed in the state since the United States Supreme Court invalidated many state abortion …

Revolutionärinnen Am Fließband: A Comparative Gendered Analysis Of The 1973 Pierburg And Ford Migrant Labor Strikes, Jordan Faith Norquist

Dissertations and Theses

In the years following the end of the Second World War, the Federal Republic of Germany experienced a "golden age" of economic upturn. Due to the labor shortage in the aftermath of war and the division of Germany, West Germany initially looked to its eastern counterpart, the German Democratic Republic, to meet its labor needs in the immediate postwar years. Once East Germany tightened its border control, the Federal Republic of Germany extended bilateral agreements to Southern Mediterranean countries to meet the nation's labor needs. Italy was the first official nation to have a bilateral work agreement with West Germany …

Nationalism And The Communists: Re-Evaluating The Communist Guomindang Split Of 1927, Ryan C. Ferro Mar 2019

Nationalism And The Communists: Re-Evaluating The Communist Guomindang Split Of 1927, Ryan C. Ferro

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The 1924-1927 United Front period has long been understood within a civil war context. The major revolutionaries of ethnic Han origins and the myriad of Comintern advisors that played significant roles have subsequently all been evaluated in those terms. My work decenters the civil war narrative in order to dislodge the rigid labels that have historically accompanied the identities of the Guomindang and the Chinese Communist Party. When re-evaluating the activities of the First United Front as a loosely defined tactical alliance, the White Terror -perpetrated by the GMD onto Communists and their affiliated members – then becomes a moment …

Pronouns In Asl-English Simultaneous Interpretation, David Quinto-Pozos, Kierstin Muroski, Emily Saunders Mar 2019

Pronouns In Asl-English Simultaneous Interpretation, David Quinto-Pozos, Kierstin Muroski, Emily Saunders

Journal of Interpretation

Pronominal systems across languages mark grammatical categories in different ways, and this can pose challenges for simultaneous interpretation. Pronouns can also be ambiguous, for example, by collapsing distinctions in some forms or by resembling demonstratives. We examine pronouns produced by a Deaf signer of American Sign Language (ASL) within a TEDx talk and how they are interpreted (simultaneously) by an ASL-English interpreter. Pronouns from both languages were coded and scrutinized for semantic correspondence across the two languages. Robust correspondences were found with some personal pronouns, especially first-person forms. However, mismatches across languages, in particular third-person forms and demonstratives, provide evidence …

Orientation To The Interpreted Interaction: An Examination Of Consumer Perception, Colleen Jones Mar 2019

Orientation To The Interpreted Interaction: An Examination Of Consumer Perception, Colleen Jones

Journal of Interpretation

A survey of non-signing adults showed that a lack of information about the interpreted interaction may lead to feelings of confusion and distraction as well as a negative perception of the Deaf interlocutor. A review of the literature and of current practice standards revealed that there is very little written on orientation to the interpreted interaction, or consumer orientation, wherein consumers are informed about what to expect during the interpreted interaction, how the interpreter will function, and how they can participate in ensuring that communication is accessible and inclusive. Recommendations include further research on current practices and the …

Is It Time To Accredit Interpreting Agencies?: Perspectives Of Bsl-English Interpreters, Brett A. Best Mar 2019

Is It Time To Accredit Interpreting Agencies?: Perspectives Of Bsl-English Interpreters, Brett A. Best

Journal of Interpretation

Interpreting agencies have been identified as playing a crucial role in the professionalization process of community interpreting (Ozolins, 2007; Dong & Turner, 2016; Dong & Napier, 2016), but little research on agency influence has been undertaken. Ozolins (2007) claims that actual agency practices may be difficult to research due to agencies guarding proprietary information or avoiding judgment. Hence this study sought insight into the perceptions of British Sign Language (BSL)-English interpreters on the role of agencies in influencing market and professional standards and market disorder (Witter-Merithew & Johnson, 2004) in the U.K. interpreting industry. The study also explored opinions on …

Flawed Goddesses: An Exploration Of Expressive Arts Therapy Theory Through Personal Narrative, Karen Estrella, Lora Williams Mar 2019

Flawed Goddesses: An Exploration Of Expressive Arts Therapy Theory Through Personal Narrative, Karen Estrella, Lora Williams

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

Flawed Goddesses is a graphic arts and performance-based exploration of Jungian theory applied to Expressive Arts Therapy for healing the psyches of breast cancer patients. Jungian approaches within expressive arts therapy use active imagination, myth, archetypes and creative exploration. Dr. Karen Estrella, Expressive Arts Therapy core faculty, brings her interest and research into the ways in which personal narrative shapes theory building - in particular she will make reference to Gloria Anzaludua's and bell hooks' work. Lora Williams, first year Expressive Arts Therapy master’s student, brings her writing and artistic explorations from her own breast cancer recovery journey. Together, they …

‘I Hate Peer Critique!’: Building A Foundation For Effective Peer Review/Critique, Summer Clark, Lisa Spitz, Liv Cummins, Kimberly Lowe, Bill Porter, Linda A. Pursley, John Mccormick

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

When students are committed to the process, peer review can improve myriad skills; it can enhance written work (Topping, 1998, Mulder et al, 2014), improve collaborative and communication skills (Topping, 2000, Topping, 2009, Mulder et al, 2014, Nicol, 2010), and increase students’ abilities to self-evaluate (Nicol et al, 2014). Self-evaluative skills are hypothesized to contribute benefits beyond the classroom, contributing to overall career and life success (Adachi et al.; Fastre et al.; Nicol et al.).

Yet effective peer review requires a relationship of trust between the reviewer and reviewee. Students must feel their peers will treat them fairly and understand …

Connecting The Clas Reads Text To First-Year Writing Course Themes And Objectives, Sara Clark, Leah Van Vaerenewyck, Robert Wauhkonen, Alison Pasinella

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

Research suggests that successful Common Read Programs (CRPs) often integrate the Common Read (CR) text into classroom syllabi across multiple disciplines (Maloy, Counihan, Dupre, Madera & Beckford, 2017). This panel aims to explore how the Lesley Community can best integrate the CLAS reads text into first year courses by sharing strategies from four Fall 2018 first-year writing courses. Given that some faculty view mandated adoption and use of a CR text as infringement on academic freedom (Benz, Comer, Juergensmeyer, & Lowry, 2013) and others struggle to make effective use of the texts in their courses, the panelists will share ideas …

Reclaiming Their Rightful Place?: An Analysis Of The Links Between Medieval And Early Modern Female Brewers And Consumers In Ireland With Their Modern Counterparts, Christina Wade Mar 2019

Reclaiming Their Rightful Place?: An Analysis Of The Links Between Medieval And Early Modern Female Brewers And Consumers In Ireland With Their Modern Counterparts, Christina Wade

Journal of Franco-Irish Studies

Over the course of the past several decades the world of beer and brewing has undergone a major shift. What was once an industry and culture dominated by men has seen a considerable influx of both female brewers and consumers. This has often been heralded in the media as a return to the historical status quo, because, they contend, women had generally been the dominant force in brewing for centuries all over the world. These articles explore this brewing history for links to the modern craft beer scene and often conclude that women are once again achieving their rightful position …

Poitin-Making: A Response To The Industrialisation Of The Whiskey Sector In Ireland?, Sylvain Tondeur Mar 2019

Poitin-Making: A Response To The Industrialisation Of The Whiskey Sector In Ireland?, Sylvain Tondeur

Journal of Franco-Irish Studies

The initial observation for this paper is that contrary to most, if not all, alcoholicbeverages, Irish poitín lacks a clear definition. There is no short and satisfyinganswer to the basic question “what is poitín?”. Poitín, or poteen, its English spelling, is generally considered “unique to Ireland”, the Glendalough distillery for instance labels its poitín as “the Original Irish Spirit” (Glendalough Distillery 2018).[1] This fiery spirit has commonly been described as a close relative of Irish whiskey, and more specifically as an illicit version of whiskey. Indeed, for centuries, poitín was “banned” in Ireland (to be more specific, …

Let's Talk About Guinness And Sex, Patricia Medcalf Mar 2019

Let's Talk About Guinness And Sex, Patricia Medcalf

Journal of Franco-Irish Studies

After Independence, the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland took centre stage in everyday life and its influence left its mark on the legislative and moral codes by which people were governed. However, the 1990s was the decade when its grip was irrevocably loosened. High profile scandals involving priests and bishops came to light, while the number of priests ordained continued to fall significantly. Mass attendance, particularly in urban areas, declined sharply and social mores relaxed. Marriage rates fell, while attitudes to sex before marriage relaxed and the numbers of births registered to unmarried mothers rose sharply. Legislative reform was momentous. …

Through A Glass Darkly: Reinforcing Beverage Icons By Leveraging Cultural Identity At Beverage Sites, The Guinness Store House, Dublin And La Cité Du Vin, Bordeaux, Susan Boyle Mar 2019

Through A Glass Darkly: Reinforcing Beverage Icons By Leveraging Cultural Identity At Beverage Sites, The Guinness Store House, Dublin And La Cité Du Vin, Bordeaux, Susan Boyle

Journal of Franco-Irish Studies

“To explore food and drink is unavoidably to visit culture also.” (Boniface 2003, p.1).

The Guinness Storehouse, Dublin and La Cité Du Vin, Bordeaux are ambitious beverage tourism sites. Both have successfully leveraged the cultural capital associated with the iconic beverages produced in their environs to devise dedicated visitor attractions.

Beverage tourism is a developing, niche sector of a larger global food tourism trend. This paper explores La Cité Du Vin, Bordeaux and the Guinness Storehouse, Dublin, and shows how these sites have become the physical embodiment of the story or culture of these beverages. Research pertaining to the broader …

Aristotle's Quarrel With Socrates: Friendship In Political Thought, John Boersma Mar 2019

Aristotle's Quarrel With Socrates: Friendship In Political Thought, John Boersma

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Friendship played an outsized role in ancient political thought in comparison to medieval and modern political philosophies. Most modern scholarship has paid relatively little attention to the role of friendship in ancient political philosophy. Recently, however, scholars are increasingly beginning to investigate classical conceptions of friendship. My dissertation joins this growing interest by examining the importance of friendship in the political thought of Socrates and Aristotle. Specifically, I analyze the divergent approaches that Socrates and Aristotle take to politics and trace these distinct approaches to their differing conceptions of friendship. Through an examination of two Platonic dialogues—the Lysis and the …
