The Singing Conductor: Interviews On The Benefits And Limitations Of Choral Conductors And Teachers Continuing To Sing, Anne Carissa Gassmann Apr 2019

The Singing Conductor: Interviews On The Benefits And Limitations Of Choral Conductors And Teachers Continuing To Sing, Anne Carissa Gassmann

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

It is our duty as musicians, conductors, and teachers to continue developing our teaching and musicianship. One of the ways growth can occur is by singing regularly in ensembles outside of teaching. As one balances career and personal life, continuing to sing is a choice each must make. It is through this document that one may see the relevance of pursuing opportunities to sing, as it may inform and elevate one’s teaching and conducting. Eleven interviews were conducted with elementary, high school, and collegiate teachers and conductors, only half of them still singing in an ensemble. This document is intended …

Anecdoche, Joshua Ryan Spaulding Apr 2019

Anecdoche, Joshua Ryan Spaulding

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Utilizing various visual and aural mediums, Anecdoche tells a story that allows the audience to examine modern American/global culture from a third person perspective. Each artistic medium adds their own voice or opinion to the story and thus further colors and clutters the stage. This represents the extremes of communication that humans have risen to in the 21st Century. The term Anecdoche means a conversation in which everyone is talking, but nobody is listening. In the same way, for much of the work, the different elements of the production aim to make their voice heard, while simultaneously cluttering the visual …

The Impact Of Training Aids On Aerodynamic And Acoustic Measures In Singing, Julie Kaldor Grives

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Nineteen subjects, eleven women and eight men, in their first two years of voice study at the collegiate level and between nineteen and twenty-two years old, participated in the studies. Seven subjects tested an exercise band. Three subjects tested an exercise ball. Two subjects tested a balance ball. Each study asked subjects to participate in three testing sessions that included a baseline, a training aid and a post-training aid …

Lesson Plan For Teaching Mohsin Hamid's "Exit West", Keyan Shayegan , '22, Peter Schmidt

English Literature Faculty Works

A lesson plan for teaching this novel to college and university students. After completing the lesson plan, students should have an enhanced understanding of the following learning goals: the similarities between different types of internal and external migration, and the effects migration has on individuals and their senses of identity; why nativism is so prevalent, the negative impact it has on humanity, and how it can be overcome by shared experiences between people; how authorities such as governments and mass media corporations use technology to deter immigration, via both force and influencing the public, in ways that dehumanize immigrants; how …

Review Of Baptism Of Fire: The Birth Of The Modern British Fantastic In World War I, Ian A. Isherwood Apr 2019

Review Of Baptism Of Fire: The Birth Of The Modern British Fantastic In World War I, Ian A. Isherwood

Interdisciplinary Studies Faculty Publications

The Great War had a lasting influence on literature and literary culture in Britain. Spanning the ‘brows’ of literary taste were authors writing in response to the cataclysmic violence experienced by the war generation, at both the war front and the home front. The war's shadow permeated all aspects of cultural expression; its experience found authors who, with varying degrees of success, wrote on its lasting influence to a readership that, as the decades wore on, grew increasingly afraid of another world war. One of the responses undoubtedly influenced by the war was the genre of fantasy. As one of …

‘A Spirit Of Faction’: The Essex Junto And The Decline Of The Federalist Party, Julia Brown Apr 2019

‘A Spirit Of Faction’: The Essex Junto And The Decline Of The Federalist Party, Julia Brown

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Early American politics was largely characterized by fear, distrust, and blatant propaganda. There is perhaps no political faction that more fully embodies this fact than the Essex Junto. This essay delves into the history of this secretive faction from Essex County, Massachusetts and their impact on the post-Revolutionary period. Through analysis of both primary and secondary source material, this study seeks to decipher the true nature of the Junto, whether they wielded significant political influence or merely functioned as a useful propaganda tool for opportunistic Jeffersonians. This paper also examines the existing scholarship on this topic, mainly works created by …

The Eagle’S Rise: Napoleon Bonaparte’S First Campaign And The Birth Of Napoleonic Warfare, Berke Gursoy Apr 2019

The Eagle’S Rise: Napoleon Bonaparte’S First Campaign And The Birth Of Napoleonic Warfare, Berke Gursoy

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Traditionally, the study of Napoleonic warfare has been approached through the lens of the massive battles of the French Empire and Emperor Napoleon, but little attention has been paid to those campaigns of General Bonaparte, specifically, on Napoleon’s first campaign, the Italian Campaign. This paper argues that the Italian campaign should be understood not only amongst Napoleon’s greatest but amongst history’s greatest demonstrations of the art of war. This thesis is advanced by an overview of the core elements of Napoleonic warfare and a demonstration of their implementation in Italy. Using both primary and secondary sources, this paper conducts an …

Nationalism Through Insecurity: Why 1979 Iranian Revolution Started?, Ryan Schweitzer Apr 2019

Nationalism Through Insecurity: Why 1979 Iranian Revolution Started?, Ryan Schweitzer

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Nationalism and revolutions are highly volatile processes and typically can be seen as attempts to create a unified society. While Iranian nationalism may be a creation of religious and academic elites, religious zeal and intellectual enlightenment cannot be the sole, or even strongest, explanation. However, with Iran, the nationalism was evoked not out of a desire to necessarily create a new nation, but instead to create an independent nation out of the control of Western powers, particularly the United States. The United States was forcefully creating new cultural identities and Westernized lifestyles, which some Iranians viewed as a security concern …

Widow As The Altar Of God: Retrieving Ancient Sources For Contemporary Discussions On Christian Discipleship, Lisa Marin Moore Apr 2019

Widow As The Altar Of God: Retrieving Ancient Sources For Contemporary Discussions On Christian Discipleship, Lisa Marin Moore

Dissertations (1934 -)

Recent accounts of the history of Christian theology tend to neglect materialconcerning widows in antiquity and their contribution to Christian discipleship. In thisdissertation I would like to offer a corrective along the lines of studying the contributionof widows in Jewish and Christian antiquity to the Catholic tradition. In particular, Icontend that the Jewish roots of the widows’ contribution to Christian theology is alsooverlooked. The idea of the widow as an “altar of God,” which emerges in early Churchliterature, requires an understanding of the history of widows and the altar in Jewish andChristian antiquity. …

Legacies Of Belle La Follette’S Big Tent Campaigns For Women’S Suffrage, Nancy Unger Apr 2019

Legacies Of Belle La Follette’S Big Tent Campaigns For Women’S Suffrage, Nancy Unger

History

In countless speeches and articles in La Follette’s Magazine, Belle Case La Follette urged that women needed the vote to secure “standards of cleanliness and healthfulness in the municipal home,” and because “home, society, and government are best when men and women keep together intellectually and spiritually.” This range of often mutually exclusive arguments created an inclusive big tent. However, arguing that women were qualified to vote by their roles as wives and mothers while maintaining that gender was superfluous to suffrage also contributed to an uneasy combination that would continue the conflict over women’s true nature and hinder their …

Music As A Cultural Gateway: A Short-Term Folk Music Program In Albania, Catherine Pierattini Apr 2019

Music As A Cultural Gateway: A Short-Term Folk Music Program In Albania, Catherine Pierattini

Capstone Collection

Folk songs have been described as a musical representation of a society’s entire culture. The field of ethnomusicology combines aspects of music and anthropology, and the study of folk music can give considerable insight into worldviews, histories, and traditions. Yet there are few study abroad program providers using this discipline as an approach to cultural analysis and exploration.

The proposed Middlebury Music Studies in Albania program would introduce diverse folk music traditions in three distinct cities, giving students the chance to learn the basics of the Albanian language, understand the historical, geographical, and social influences on the music in the …

Reexamining Amos’ Use Of Rhetorical Questions In Hebrew Prophetic Rhetoric, Matthew Bovard Apr 2019

Reexamining Amos’ Use Of Rhetorical Questions In Hebrew Prophetic Rhetoric, Matthew Bovard

Masters Theses

The book of Amos contains a message of repentance and judgment to eighth-century Israel. However, the book also portrays the Hebrew prophet persuading his audience of their condemnation before a God whom they do not fully understand. The prophet employs rhetorical questions to help assert his argument. Modern scholarship, however, does not address the function(s) of rhetorical questions from a purely Hebrew context, but evaluates them from an approach heavily influenced by Classical rhetoric. This error results in an incomplete view of Amos’ rhetoric and message that removes the rhetorical questions from the context of the Hebrew prophet. Thus, a …

"Death Stars, Death Breathes:" The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao And The Trauma Of Diaspora, Hannah Quire

Senior Theses

The following thesis aims to examine the interlocutions of diasporic trauma and genre in The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz. Centering the work of prominent theorists regarding diaspora, trauma, and literature, this project enacts a close reading of the novel in order to frame it as a text that is at once principally concerned with diasporic trauma while also defying thematic labels and genre categorization. This project begins by foregrounding the work of trauma and diaspora scholars to demonstrate the relationality between the two fields of study, while the second chapter examines those presences in Oscar …

Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Spanish Wines (And A Few Things You Did), John Phillips Wacker Apr 2019

Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Spanish Wines (And A Few Things You Did), John Phillips Wacker

Senior Theses

The Spanish wine scene is incredibly diverse, and an immense number of different wines are made in the country. Likewise, Spain is incredibly rich in culture, with a wide array of languages, histories, cultures, and cuisines found throughout the nation. The sheer number and variety of Spanish wines and the incredible variety of cultures found in Spain may be daunting to the uninitiated. Thus, a guide to Spanish wine and culture, which not only details the two but links them, as well, may prove very helpful to the Spanish wine newcomer or perhaps even a sommelier.

This thesis-guide was compiled …

Children's Literature As A Catalyst For Social Change, Lyndsey Reynolds Apr 2019

Children's Literature As A Catalyst For Social Change, Lyndsey Reynolds

Senior Theses

This thesis is the amalgamation of a creative writing project and an exploration of the ways that children’s literature influences and draws from social justice causes. It started after reading Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls and realizing that children’s books are not as simple as I remember them being. This book inspired me to consider the power of children’s literature to push young readers to be aware of and thoughtfully engaged with political, social and cultural conversations. The first phase of my thesis was exploring the relationship between social justice and children’s books by reading scholarly materials. In these …

The Southern American Belle: History, Evolution, And Perceptions In Contemporary Culture, Hannah B. Vickery

Senior Theses

This research study seeks to examine the concept of the southern belle and to provide greater insight into how the southern belle is perceived by those today as a means of describing contemporary southern womanhood and culture. Chapter 1 traces the history of the southern belle from its pre-Civil War roots, through the turmoil of the Civil War, and up through post-war Reconstruction and beyond, thereby situating the concept of the southern belle within the context of southern history. Utilizing a socio-linguistic approach, Chapter 2 explains the research methodology of this study where two group interviews were conducted and where …

Leadership And Community In The Arts: A Case Study Of Legend And Culture In Chiusdino, Italy, Amanda Svetlak Apr 2019

Leadership And Community In The Arts: A Case Study Of Legend And Culture In Chiusdino, Italy, Amanda Svetlak

Arts Administration Masters Theses

The complexity of culture goes beyond artistic expression, nationality, race, and religion. Culture shapes our communications, interactions, and our perceptions of the world around us (Hall, 1989). Studies show that self-awareness of our own culture through exposure to the unfamiliar leads to intercultural competences (Herlo, 2015; Crossman, 2011; Hermond 2018; Hall 1989). As technology, travel, and community diversity continues to shrink our world and diversify our workplaces, these intercultural competences support modern processes of marketing, community engagement, and organizational leadership. This thesis is a case study of the community culture, organizational culture, and structure of arts institutions in Chiusdino, Italy. …

A (Feminist) Farewell To Arms: The Impact Of The Peace Process With The Farc– Ep On Colombian Feminism, Lina M. CéSpedes-BáEz Apr 2019

A (Feminist) Farewell To Arms: The Impact Of The Peace Process With The Farc– Ep On Colombian Feminism, Lina M. CéSpedes-BáEz

Cornell International Law Journal

The strategic deployment of international law played a key role in introducing a gender-based reading of the Colombian internal armed conflict. During the early 2000s, domestic women’s rights NGOs appropriated the language of this body of law to demonstrate that the conflict not only was imposing a heavy toll on women, but also that it was impacting them differentially and disproportionately. To do so, they outlined a narrative using the terminology of international human rights, humanitarian, and criminal law to frame particular wrongs women were enduring as gender-based violence. Following the lines of the international discourse on conflict and women, …

Transnational Legal Feminisms: Challenges And Opportunities, Sital Kalantry Apr 2019

Transnational Legal Feminisms: Challenges And Opportunities, Sital Kalantry

Cornell International Law Journal

Transnational legal feminism reflects the interconnection and interchange of feminist legal theories and feminist legal solutions across multiple jurisdictions. Some advocates who work across jurisdictions transpose feminist ideas and framings developed in one country to another country often without reflection. Often women’s rights advocates and scholars draw from feminist ideas, theories, and legal solutions developed in different temporal, historical, and social, and other contexts. There are number of opportunities this interchange creates but also a number of challenges. Feminists in the transnational world should recognize that practices can (but do not always) vary in meaning across different global contexts. Transnational …

Soviet Germans And Soviets Living In Germany During The Second World War, Artur Kalandarov Apr 2019

Soviet Germans And Soviets Living In Germany During The Second World War, Artur Kalandarov

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

In response to Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22nd, 1941, Stalin ordered the deportation of millions of ethnic Germans residing near the Eastern Front into Central Asia. This decision represented a swift change in the Soviet Union’s treatment of the sizable German population that had lived in Russia since the reign of Katherine the Great. Simultaneously, as Nazi Germany expanded its territory, Hitler’s regime had to deal with a massive influx of Soviet citizens into the Third Reich. This paper explores the change in treatment of ethnic Germans living in the USSR (commonly referred to as Soviet …
