Milton, Jerome, And Apocalyptic Virginity, Brooke Conti
Milton, Jerome, And Apocalyptic Virginity, Brooke Conti
English Faculty Publications
Milton’s youthful interest in virginity is usually regarded as a private eccentricity abandoned on his maturation. His “Mask” is often read, analogously, as charting the Lady’s movement from temporary virginity to wedded chastity. This essay challenges those claims, arguing that Milton’s understanding of virginity’s poetic and apocalyptic powers comes from Saint Jerome, whose ideas he struggles with throughout his career. Reading “A Mask” alongside Jerome suggests that Milton endorses the apocalyptic potential of virginity without necessarily assigning those powers to the Lady herself. In later works, Milton modifies and adapts Jerome before finally producing the perfect eremitic hero of “Paradise …

Muddling The Middle: Cynical Representations Of Ethnic Relations In V.S. And Shiva Naipaul, Kevin Frank
Publications and Research
In this essay from the collection, Seepersad and Sons: Naipaulian Synergies, Kevin Frank argues that coming from a creolized society, unlike their father, Seepersad, V.S. and Shiva Naipaul's representations of "race" and ethnicity in their works is cynical, favoring one side in the Indo- and Afro-Caribbean racial antagonism, mainly because of their anxiety about "Black Power."

Introduction. Dialogues With Shklovsky: The Duvakin Interviews 1967-1968., Slav N. Gratchev, Irina Evdokimova
Modern Languages Faculty Research
Dialogues with Shklovsky: The Duvakin Interviews 1967–1968 reflects the spirit of times—when the most dramatic events of the twentieth century were happening in Russia and the USSR. The first English translation of the 1967–1968 interviews with the founder of the Formalist School of literary theory, Viktor Shklovsky, this volume offers a slice of Russian micro-history that relies on the living voice of that history. Through the transcription of a six-hour phono-document, the readers will hear the voice of a real participant in events that for the longest time in the USSR were forbidden to be discussed or written about.

Mapping The Presence Of Latin American Art In Canadian Museums And Universities, Alena Robin
Mapping The Presence Of Latin American Art In Canadian Museums And Universities, Alena Robin
Hispanic Studies Publications
This essay overviews how Canadian museums and universities have historically accessioned Latin American visual culture and identifies potential ways of sustaining interest, streamlining initiatives, and promoting access. The larger project aims at contributing to a hemispheric and transnational understanding of the history and growth in Canada of the field of Latin American art and its subfields of Pre-Columbian, colonial, modern, and contemporary art. While the study of art history among Canadian museums and universities has kept up with the decades-long interest in Latin American art and visual culture, there remain considerable challenges in bringing Latin American art to the forefront …
Sympathetic Physics: The Keely Motor And The Laws Of Thermodynamics In Nineteenth-Century Culture, Robert Macdougall
Sympathetic Physics: The Keely Motor And The Laws Of Thermodynamics In Nineteenth-Century Culture, Robert Macdougall
History Publications
In Philadelphia in the 1870s, John Worrell Keely announced the invention of a fantastic new motor that could, he promised, drive locomotives, power factories, and even defy gravity without fuel or heat. The Keely Motor became the most notorious perpetual motion scheme of the nineteenth century, attracting believers and investors for nearly thirty years. This article explores the “work” the motor performed for Keely, his supporters, and his critics—not physical work, but financial, cultural, and psychological. To investors, the Keely Motor represented a dream of riches without effort. To Keely’s critics, the motor offered an opportunity to defend the legitimacy …

Science, Values, Traditional/Indigenous Knowledge And Dialogue Of Saberes, Hugh Lacey
Science, Values, Traditional/Indigenous Knowledge And Dialogue Of Saberes, Hugh Lacey
Philosophy Faculty Works
This article discusses the possibility of a constructive dialogue between modern science and traditional/indigenous saberes, including the saberes of the Traditional peoples of Latin America. The argument developed here depends on interpreting science in terms of multi-strategic research [P-MS]: it makes use of the distinction between decontextualizing strategies (SDs) and contest-sensitive strategies (SCs) and the theses: the methodological strategies adopted in research projects can vary with the characteristics of the objects being investigated; there are relations of mutual reinforcement between the adoption of a strategy and adherence to particular ethical and social values; there are limits on the types of …
Reconsidering The Roman Catholic Apocrypha, Alex Andersen
Reconsidering The Roman Catholic Apocrypha, Alex Andersen
Classical Conversations
For centuries, Protestants have debated with Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians over the canonicity of the Roman Catholic Apocrypha, a collection of seven books and two additions to books composed from the third century B.C. to the first century A.D. and considered to be canonical by all major non-Protestant Christian denominations. This thesis plunges into this discussion on the Roman Catholic Apocrypha’s canonicity, contending that the Roman Catholic Apocrypha is noncanonical. First, this thesis propounds two broad models for canonicity, the Community Canon Model and the Intrinsic Canon Model, and maintains that the Intrinsic Canon Model is a better model …
Gangs In Honduras And Containment Policy, Lauren Hiles
Gangs In Honduras And Containment Policy, Lauren Hiles
Classical Conversations
This paper outlines a plausible mechanism whereby the country of Honduras could curtail gang violence within its borders with the eventual intent of exterminating gangs in Honduras. First, the need for such a plan is presented, with current statistics on the violence in Honduras. The paper then explores the possible use of an adapted form of Cold War containment policy against Honduran gangs. This method of containment would work by hindering the activities of the gangs and more importantly by addressing the societal factors that contribute to gang proliferation. It would contain gangs ideologically, economically, and socially, inhibiting their growth …
Technological Advancement In The Church: Its Effectiveness In Improving Worship And Church Functions, Aaron T. Janzen
Technological Advancement In The Church: Its Effectiveness In Improving Worship And Church Functions, Aaron T. Janzen
Selected Honors Theses
This paper provides an objective look at the subjective topic of technological advancement in the ministry setting. The first step of this literary work is to identify what constitutes as technology and how has it either improved or complicated life as a whole. From the worship service to productivity in the office, technology has permeated the church world. Through literary research and interviews of technical directors in churches, this paper will be able to analyze the positive and negative components of technology adoption. This includes ease of process and spiritual potency. How technology has changed the church dynamic in the …
The Church Discipleship: Real Praxis, Omar Rojas
The Church Discipleship: Real Praxis, Omar Rojas
Masters of Theological Studies
This paper presents a holistic model for effective discipleship. Definitions of discipleship used by several ecclesiastical denominations as well as a secular perspective are examined, but biblical examples and principles of discipleship serve as the platform to achieve spiritual knowledge and its purpose. The current state of discipleship in a sample of some of the denominational Christian churches in the West is presented in order to understand the necessary changes that need to be made. In the same manner, this paper offers some elements of healthy discipleship from around the world that provide a fresh way to integrate real discipleship …

Comic Characters: Campbellian* Or Not?, Samantha Matos
Classical Conversations
There exists a peculiar pattern throughout numerous stories worldwide, which Joseph Campbell christened the ‘monomyth’ in his 1949 work, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. Campbell researched stories from across cultures and used their similarities to determine a pattern that great tales seemed to follow. In this hero’s journey, the protagonist enters a new kind of realm, conquers his enemies, and ventures home with power, knowledge, and probably treasure of some kind. This monomythic pattern consists of seventeen steps, though not all of these steps are necessary, and many of them serve as alternatives to each other.
I propose that …
‘Never Disobey’: How Confucian Filial Piety Is Counterproductive To Its Goals For Society?, Bruce Crosby
‘Never Disobey’: How Confucian Filial Piety Is Counterproductive To Its Goals For Society?, Bruce Crosby
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The paper presents a contentious aspect in Confucius’s teachings. In the Analects, there is a contradiction regarding the philosopher’s stance on filial piety and its importance to society. Such a contradiction has the potential to unravel much of his philosophy and represents an inconsistency particularly when taking into account Confucius’s goal of creating a harmonious society.

Humor, Power And Culture: A New Theory On The Experience And Ethics Of Humor, Jennifer Marra
Humor, Power And Culture: A New Theory On The Experience And Ethics Of Humor, Jennifer Marra
Dissertations (1934 -)
The aim of this dissertation is to offer a new theory of humor that takes seriously both the universality and power of humor in culture. In the first chapter, I summarize historical and contemporary theories, and show how each either 1) fails to give any definition of humor, 2) fails as a theory of humor, and/or 3) underappreciates, dismisses, or does not consider the power of humor in experience. The second chapter explains the failures of prior theories by understanding the problem in terms of Ernst Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms. These forms of culture are perspectives through which we …
Polynesian Civilization And The Future Colonization Of Space, John Grayzel
Polynesian Civilization And The Future Colonization Of Space, John Grayzel
Comparative Civilizations Review
Polynesian civilization was configured—prior to Western colonization—in ways similar to that sometimes described as necessary for humanity's interstellar migration into space. Over thousands of years and miles, across open ocean, a core population expanded to settle on hundreds of scattered islands, while maintaining shared identity, continued awareness and repetitive contact with each other. Key to their expansion was their development of robust ocean-going vessels and their extraordinary abilities to navigate across vast expanses of open water. The first half of the 1800s saw a surge in contacts between Polynesia and western missionaries and whalers, followed by significant depopulation due to …
Epistemology And Presuppositional Thought, Courtney L. Krause
Epistemology And Presuppositional Thought, Courtney L. Krause
Selected Honors Theses
This paper will present the coherency of Reformed Christian theism’s presuppositional epistemology. It will argue for the biblical foundation of presupposing the existence and truth of God in every aspect of one’s life. This presupposition will be presented as the necessary component for interpreting the revelation of God correctly and righteously. This presupposition is vital, as it acknowledges Christ as sovereign over the realm of thought. Indeed, from the Reformed Christian theistic perspective, understanding reason presuppositionally from Scripture is the only way to reason which is honoring to God. It claims any lack of acknowledgement of and submission to Jesus …
Bringing Back Thumbnail Sketching: Design Thinking And Its’ Relationship To Concept Generation In Graphic Design, Casie M. Hoffman
Bringing Back Thumbnail Sketching: Design Thinking And Its’ Relationship To Concept Generation In Graphic Design, Casie M. Hoffman
Selected Honors Theses
Design thinking has been used in the business world for years, but are there other areas that it could apply and benefit greatly? How about in the graphic design world? The process of creating a design project is starting to be overlooked by many new designers, but this can cause our best ideas to stay hidden in the back of our heads. Perhaps if we took the process of design thinking and applied it to concept generation, we might find ourselves at the root of graphic design: the pen and paper. The expanded literature review and project take a closer …

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This is a collection of poetry and nonfiction using the Japanese poetic form of haibun (a back and forth between haiku and prose, both sections attempting to clarify and further each other while approaching the subject in entirely different manners) as a form of memoir instead. This collection is about my home that has not always felt like home and what it means to love and hate an Appalachian identity. It is also about my relationships, both with Appalachia and the world outside it and with the people who call it home and the people I have met when I …
