The Rebel Made Me Do It: Mascots, Race, And The Lost Cause, Patrick Smith Apr 2019

The Rebel Made Me Do It: Mascots, Race, And The Lost Cause, Patrick Smith

Dissertations

Public memory is commonly tied to street names, toponyms, and monuments because they are interacted with daily and are often directly associated with race, class, and regimes of power. Mascots are not thought of in the same manner although they are present as part of everyday life. The childish or sometimes comedic nature of the mascot discounts it from many considerations of its influence, symbolism and history. Nonetheless this research focuses on the term “Rebel” as a secondary school mascot. The term possesses the trappings of race because the American vernacular ties the word to the Confederate States of America …

Conveying Emotion Through Lighting On An Expressionless Face, Brittany Lindsay, Rion Huffman

Posters

The purpose of this project was to explore how light affects the overall emotion of a picture when color and facial expressions are removed. Typically, a viewer’s emotion is affected by color and expressions seen on different faces. Each model will have their portrait taken in six different light set-ups. Through those six different photos, I will demonstrate how much light affects a viewer’s interpretation of mood for each picture.

It Takes A Village: An Exploration Of The Components Needed To Create Professional Themed Fashion, Christina Epler, Rion Huffman

Posters

Arguably, there are few examples of imagery in advertising that are more powerful than professional quality fashion portraits. However, creating successful images in this genre is incredibly challenging. Photographers must not only master the crafts of lighting, posing and other techniques in their profession, but they must also master scheduling, time management, communication and interpersonal relationships. The photographer must rely on a team of professionals, from make-up artists to models. This poster will document one undergraduate students’ journey to master these challenges and complete a series of themed fashion portraits for commercial usage. Emphasis will be placed on documentation, explanation …

The Art Of Creating Photographic Portrait Sketches, Pablo E. Ortiz, Rion Huffman

Posters

The art of creating a professional quality photographic portrait is a skill that an undergraduate student may take their entire educational career to master. On a separate path, an undergraduate may also take their career to master freehand drawing and sketching. When these two creative paths align, the results can be extraordinary. This poster will showcase the journey of one undergraduate student to combine their photographic and artistic portrait skills along with software techniques to create one of a kind photographic portrait sketches. The poster will serve as a best practices guide to the creation of each image.

Religion, Politics, And The "Virgin Queen", Ellen Long, Kyle Thompson Apr 2019

Religion, Politics, And The "Virgin Queen", Ellen Long, Kyle Thompson

Posters

This paper will analyze Elizabeth I’s political style and the effects on it by both religion and influential men in the “Virgin Queen’s” council. Her relationships with Mary Tudor and Mary, Queen of Scots, and their religion, affected her politics and how her Protestantism clashed with these two Catholic monarchs. Comparing Mary Tudor’s forceful assertion of Catholicism in her reign to Elizabeth’s approach to Protestant dissenters will demonstrate religion’s role in their politics. I will also analyze the aspect of religion on Elizabeth’s and Mary Stuart’s dual claims to the English throne. Elizabeth Jenkins’s work, Elizabeth the Great, explores all …

Contemporary Muslim Fashions: De Young Museum, San Francisco, Ca, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Calico, chintz, damask, muslin, cashmere, seersucker, taffeta, shawl, caftan, and cummerbund-all English terms derived from Islamic textiles and dress-are the products of textile technologies that resulted from colonization and trade. Their cultural origins are long forgotten, shrouded in the fast-moving commercialized fashion industry and haute couture ofthe West that developed during the 20th century. The exhibition, Contemporary Muslim Fashions, is a game-changer.

The exhibition organizers, Jill D'Alessandro and laura Camerlengo, curators of costumes and textiles at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, worked with Reina Lewis in London as a curatorial consultant. Together, they drew upon the local advice …

Seeing What Is Not There: The Art And Process Of Infrared Photography, Audrey Dainty, Rion Huffman Apr 2019

Seeing What Is Not There: The Art And Process Of Infrared Photography, Audrey Dainty, Rion Huffman

Posters

Infrared photography is a seldom-explored photographic technique, however there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained in regard to tonality and surrealism when utilizing this technique. The process of capturing infrared images through an infrared lens filter is a more practical, yet still complex, approach to this photography technique. Resulting images lack definition and need refinement through digital editing. This poster will serve the following purposes: 1. Outline the process of capturing images with an infrared sensitive lens filter. 2. Outline the process of editing infrared images in order to properly utilize their tonality and surrealistic properties.

Refraction And Portraiture, Lindsey Chambers, Rion Huffman Apr 2019

Refraction And Portraiture, Lindsey Chambers, Rion Huffman

Posters

Using a glass ball (known as a crystal ball, lens ball, or refraction ball), one is able to capture a unique perspective in a photo. When light passes through a denser mass, refraction occurs. An inverted image of the scene behind the ball is seen. Refraction balls are most often used in landscape or up-close photography, where the ball creates a similar effect to a fisheye lens. Though, the refraction ball has much more flexibility. The ball can be used within the scene to create an interesting focal point. This project uses a sixty-millimeter refraction ball to showcase people in …

The documentation of this academic journey will serve as a roadmap for others to understand the challenges and the overall process to meld these three mediums.

Fear And Loathing: How An Engrained Fear Of The Unknown Fuels Transphobia, Elizabeth Bedortha

Community Engagement Student Work

As a way to increase legitimate education around a historically marginalized population, research was conducted around the fear of the unknown and how this fear contributes to opinion formation and informs prejudice, particularly toward the Transgender community. This research was used to inform the planning and facilitation of a panel discussion aimed at humanizing the Transgender community and encouraging critical opinion formation. A workshop and panel event was held and analysis of responses from post event surveys, interactive posters, and participant submitted questions was completed. Black Culture In A "Post-Soul" Era (Engl 068) Syllabus, Anthony S. Foy Apr 2019

Black Culture In A "Post-Soul" Era (Engl 068) Syllabus, Anthony S. Foy

Digital Humanities Curricular Development

Generations of African American writers, artists, and intellectuals have emerged since the 1960s to reconsider the meaning of Blackness in the wake of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements that preceded them. Supported by historical and critical studies, we examine how Black novelists, playwrights, and poets in the ‘post-soul’ era have dealt with a complex of shifting, but interconnected, concerns, including the imperatives of racial representation in a society increasingly driven by mass consumption and global media, the contentious discourses of sexual politics, and the polarization of classes within Black America. For this version of the course, the major …

Intergenerational Space-Holding Within Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Other Gender & Sexual Minority Communities, Shaun William Kevin Connors

Community Engagement Student Work

This project examined the ways LGBTQ+ communities document, share, and connect to their histories. It supported an interactive, sensory learning-based workshop that fostered exploration and learning in LGBTQ+ and adjacent communities. The workshop was attended by a variety of participants who showed the markers of having engaged in a cultural third space while learning about and engaging with LGBTQ+ history-based information. Overall, the workshop was a resounding success and provided opportunities for further research and exploration into the connections between how people access their personal and cultural histories and what pathways are provided for them to do so.

Fishy Reasoning And The Ethics Of Eating, Mylan Engel Jr. Apr 2019

Fishy Reasoning And The Ethics Of Eating, Mylan Engel Jr.

Between the Species

Ethical vegetarians believe that it is morally wrong to eat meat. Yet, many self-ascribed “ethical vegetarians” continue to eat fish. The question I explore here is this: Can one coherently maintain that it is morally wrong to eat meat, but morally permissible to eat fish? I argue that it is morally inconsistent for ethical vegetarians to eat fish, not on the obvious yet superficial ground that fish flesh is meat, but on the morally substantive ground that fish are sentient intelligent beings capable of experiencing morally significant pain and thus deserve moral consideration equal to that owed birds and mammals.
