The Desegregation Of The Sturgis All-White High School - September 1956, Austin Valentine, Austin Valentine

Student Scholarship & Creative Works

On September 5th of 1956, nine African American students tried to attend classes at the all-white Sturgis Kentucky High School. The event sparked mixed opinion among the townsfolk, many of whom showed up to protest the student’s enrollment. As a result a number of Kentucky State Police along with members of the Kentucky National Guard were dispatched to calm the crowd and to allow those students the right, granted by the United States Supreme Court, to obtain a quality education free from oppression and racial segregation.

Systemic Medical Racism: The Reconstruction Of Whiteness Through The Destruction Of Black Bodies., Julisha S. Ford

Honors College Theses

The Tuskegee Syphilis Study was a non-therapeutic medical study on the effects of untreated syphilis on African American men. From 1932-1972 the Public Health Service of the United States, with the aid of various local doctors, conducted the study on 400 black men of Macon County in Tuskegee, Alabama. The black subjects of the study were not aware that treatment would be withheld nor the purpose of their examination. The legacy of the study has led to discussions on the influence of white authority in medicine and the use of black bodies for intellectual advancement. This thesis will explore the …

"The Beauty! The Beauty!": Colonial Literary Legacies And Conquering The Female Body In Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Alexi Decker Apr 2019

"The Beauty! The Beauty!": Colonial Literary Legacies And Conquering The Female Body In Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao, Alexi Decker

Honors Theses

Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Ufa of Oscar Wao includes a plethora of references to everything from classic literature to modem pop culture. However, Diaz ends his novel with a reference to Joseph Conrad's colonial novella Heart of Darkness, therefore inviting readers to view Oscar Wao through a lens of colonial literature. This in turn results in a reconsideration of the current critical consensus surrounding the text's treatment of sexuality and masculinity in the modern Dominican diaspora, specifically that of Oscar, the novel's titular character.

Inconnecting Oscar Wao to Heart of Darkness, I analyze the text's and characters's violence against …

Palatable Shades Of Gender: Status Processes At The Intersections Of Race, Gender, And Team Formation, Jasmón L. Bailey Apr 2019

Palatable Shades Of Gender: Status Processes At The Intersections Of Race, Gender, And Team Formation, Jasmón L. Bailey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the importance of studying how race and gender influence partner selection processes of team formation. Stratified social systems influence the choice and decision-making behaviors that shape group and team formation (Hechter 1978). By testing Skvoretz’s and Bailey’s (2016) formal theory of team formation choice processes derived from expectation states theory, the dissertation aims to understand how race and gender influence a person’s choice and decision-making with respect to forming a group of problem-solving teammates. Through a quasi-experimental research design, subjects participate in simulated interactive environments in which they can select and personalize self-represented avatars and then choose …

In Search Of National Identity: Portraits Of Motherless Women In Clarín And Galdós, Leslie I. Quezada Apr 2019

In Search Of National Identity: Portraits Of Motherless Women In Clarín And Galdós, Leslie I. Quezada

LSU Master's Theses

Drawing on novels by Leopoldo Alas Clarín and Benito Pérez Galdós, I will examine the portraits of women in La Regenta (1885), Tristana (1892), andLa de San Quintín (1894). By exploring how women in the works are reflected in terms of identity and nature of their role from a male-authored perspective, I will study how different aspects influence the development of their character, as well as the issues they face when searching for their identity. Galdós and Clarín unravel the women to embody the nation of Spain and the conditions it was going through before the …

Fact Or Fiction: African American Confederate Veterans, Isaac J. Shoop Apr 2019

Fact Or Fiction: African American Confederate Veterans, Isaac J. Shoop

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

As an intern this past summer at The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, I came across many intriguing artifacts. One of the artifacts that stood out to me most was the photo above, which I discovered when the museum’s CEO conducted a behind-the-scenes tour. When I look at this photo, I see, on the surface at least, a group of 13 African American men who are presumably Confederate veterans. Several of these men are dressed up for the occasion. Many are wearing ribbons, one man has a Confederate flag, and another has a trumpet. There are also two …
