Speculative Fiction And Speculative Ethics: Society, Science Fiction, And The Thomas Theorem, Daniel O. Missroon
Honors College Theses
The Thomas Theorem suggests that Speculative Fiction creates possible futures that motivate contemporary individuals to create those futures. This work explores the futures created and denied in three SF texts by modern masters Ursula K. Le Guin, William Gibson, and Dan Simmons.
Who Is Baby Girl? A Philosophical Discussion Of The Legal Obligation To Define Authenticity, Madison Hayes
Who Is Baby Girl? A Philosophical Discussion Of The Legal Obligation To Define Authenticity, Madison Hayes
Honors College Theses
In the later twentieth century, American law attempted to address legacies of unjust treatment of Native Americans though legislation like the Indian Child Welfare Act, which requires considering Native American identity in child custody decisions. This created some complex legal questions about exactly what constituted Native identity. The Supreme Court case, Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl, exposed a number of problems that arose from determining authentic tribal identity. To offer a more precise analysis of the problem of identity in American law, I will engage in philosophical investigations into the nature of authenticity, bringing in the work of the …
Morality From Meaninglessness In Simone De Beauvoir's "The Ethics Of Ambiguity", Victoria L. Riggs
Morality From Meaninglessness In Simone De Beauvoir's "The Ethics Of Ambiguity", Victoria L. Riggs
Honors College Theses
In her book The Ethics of Ambiguity, French existentialist writer Simone de Beauvoir delves into the human condition and the possibilities for morality that arise from her understanding of such. Beginning with the assumption that there is no externally objective meaning or value to humanity, Beauvoir presents humanity as fundamentally free to create meaning and values for themselves. Beauvoir argues that humans are all simultaneously free to choose, yet limited in our choice by the facts of our situations, a paradoxical state of being she labels as our fundamental ambiguity. It is because of this ambiguity, she asserts, that …

Gone With The Wind And The Lost Cause, Caitlin Hall
Gone With The Wind And The Lost Cause, Caitlin Hall
Honors College Theses
Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind is usually considered a sympathetic portrayal of the suffering and deprivation endured by Southerners during the Civil War. I argue the opposite, that Mitchell is subverting the Southern Myth of the Lost Cause, exposing it as hollow and ultimately self-defeating.
Study Drugs For Underprivileged Children, Joshua Watkins
Study Drugs For Underprivileged Children, Joshua Watkins
Scholars Week
Abstract
The effects of stimulant medication have been beneficial for individuals with Narcolepsy and especially individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Keisha Ray has offered a solution in her academic work that could help also help underprivileged children. The solution she is proposing is to offer stimulant medication to them. In this paper, I assert my thesis, offering stimulant medication to underprivileged children would not be a good, right, and practical solution to helping their social inequalities. The treatment/enhancement distinction in medicine is elaborated between Ray and me. The definition of what is a healthy normal functioning body and a …

Thank You For Coming : Space, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University
2018-2019 Borders and Boundaries
The final work in Faye Driscoll’s three-part Thank You For Coming series, Space is an intimate shared performance, and a liberatory ritual that confronts life’s most notable transition. Alone with the audience, Driscoll constructs a temporary world upheld by pulleys, ropes and the weightiness of others, to invoke the sensations of absence. At the center of the work is the human body—built for action, self contained, and driven by its longing for the felt world. Space calls forth new presences and offers an enlivened contemplation of our shared conclusion. Driscoll’s Thank You For Coming series, extends the sphere of influence …

Home As Love: Transcending Positionality In Leila Aboulela’S The Translator, Ghadir K. Zannoun
Home As Love: Transcending Positionality In Leila Aboulela’S The Translator, Ghadir K. Zannoun
Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Publications
Contrary to hegemonic Western representations of Muslim women as victims of Islam and Muslim men, Sudanese-Scottish Leila Aboulela’s The Translator depicts a Muslim woman, Sammar, whose sense of home and belonging is predicated on her romantic love for her late cousin and husband, Tarig. Therefore, after his death, she feels alienated from her home in Sudan and leaves for Aberdeen, Scotland, where she is ostracized because she is Muslim. While this Muslim identity proves indispensable for her survival and gradual healing, ultimate normalcy and belonging are restored when she reclaims the world of love and acceptance she has lost with …
To Remake A Man: Disability And The Civil War, Cameron T. Sauers
To Remake A Man: Disability And The Civil War, Cameron T. Sauers
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
With a disability certificate and discharge from the military in hand, disabled citizens who had not long previously been abled bodied servicemen went through a period of emasculation followed by a return to waged labor which redeemed their sacrifice. These disability certificates were issued in large quantities by the sprawling northern bureaucratic machines created by the Civil War. The above-pictured certificate, issued to James Murray of the 56th New York, discharged Murray from service because, according to his regimental surgeon, he would “never be able to discharge his duty as a soldier.” Murray stood 5’8″ when he re-enlisted for three …

Save Our Sound Obx, Inc. V. North Carolina Department Of Transportation, Mitch L. Werbell V
Public Land & Resources Law Review
The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled in favor of several governmental agencies seeking to construct a new bridge in the Pamlico Sound adjacent to North Carolina’s Outer Banks. For years, state and federal agencies have put forth a massive coordinated effort to address the constant weather damage and erosion which occurs to a section of North Carolina Highway 12. The court found the agencies properly cleared NEPA’s environmental review requirements for the bridge’s construction. Additionally, the opponent-litigants’ efforts to add claims challenging the project, based on new information about a shipwreck in the bridge’s path, were futile.
Descriptive To Substantive Representation: A Study Of Gender Quotas In The National Assembly Of Pakistan, 2002-2018, Ameena Zia
Dissertations
Women’s political representation is linked to the empowerment of women in society. In efforts to alleviate women’s disenfranchisement from the political discourse, the international development framework included gender quotas as mechanisms to facilitate an increase in the presence of women in parliaments. Existing research has examined the link between Hanna F. Pitkin’s conceptualization of descriptive representation and substantive representation with a focus on performative measures of women parliamentarians. This longitudinal study expands the scope of existing inquiry and captures the transformational change in power relations as an outcome of the increase in women members of parliaments. This research provides an …

Framing Questions And Modes Of Inquiry In Illustration Process And Critique, Robert Brinkerhoff
Framing Questions And Modes Of Inquiry In Illustration Process And Critique, Robert Brinkerhoff
Faculty & Librarian Work
Every creative act begins with a question—whether consciously or unconsciously formed—and illustrators may enhance their approaches to visual problems by framing a line of critical inquiry that invigorates conceptualization. While inventories and lists of questions are suitable ways to begin, there exist many different modes of questioning—verbal and non-verbal, manual and cognitive, linear and discursive, intuitive and rational, integrative and deconstructive. This chapter explores diverse methods for inquiry in problem definition and resolution, describing a variety of models and incorporating observations by professional artist-educators to expose different strategies for illustrators.

The Tsin Bee Hooghan: Cross-Cultural Discourse And The Emergence Of A New Icon Of Diné Cultural Identity, Lillian Makeda
The Tsin Bee Hooghan: Cross-Cultural Discourse And The Emergence Of A New Icon Of Diné Cultural Identity, Lillian Makeda
Art & Art History ETDs
The Navajo hogan is one of a small number of traditional Native American dwellings still in use during the 21st century. Part of the reason for the hogan’s persistence has been the widespread adoption of a particular form, the tsin bee hooghan, that can accommodate Euro-American building technologies while also serving as a distinctive symbol for tribal identity. This dissertation surveys the emergence of the tsin bee hooghan as a Navajo icon during the period between 1890 and 1950 and suggests that Euro-American representations of Navajo culture played a role in popularizing the form. These representations could be found …

American Bolsheviki: The Beginnings Of The First Red Scare, 1917 To 1918, Jonathan Dunning
American Bolsheviki: The Beginnings Of The First Red Scare, 1917 To 1918, Jonathan Dunning
Scholars Week
A consensus has developed among historians that in the early months of 1919, widespread panic consumed the American public and government as many came to fear a Bolshevik coup of the United States government and the undermining of the American way of life, and this fear persisted until 1920. Known as the First Red Scare, this period became one of the most well-known episodes of American fear of Communism in US history. With this focus on the events of 1919 to 1920, however, historians of the First Red Scare have often ignored the initial American reaction to the October Revolution …
