“None But The Brave Deserve The Fair?” An Analysis Of Lovers Postcards From The First World War, Randall Slonaker
“None But The Brave Deserve The Fair?” An Analysis Of Lovers Postcards From The First World War, Randall Slonaker
Student Projects from the Archives
Over ten percent of postcards in the Lovers Portraits Vol. 1 binder feature couples where the man is wearing a military uniform, with twenty-two of these cards depicting men in World War I era, United States military garb. The images and captions featured on these cards evoke familiar ideas of romance, courtship, and marital fidelity. Therefore, I have chosen to write a short synopsis that groups all of the World War One themed cards in this binder in one of three categories: courtship and pursuit, domesticity and marriage, and marital commitment and fidelity. I have positioned the images and captions …

“Feminists Leap Year Vol. 2:” The Portrayals Of Gender In Early 20th Century Postcards, Anthony Pankuch, Jessica Wilson
Student Projects from the Archives
The “Feminists Leap Year Vol. 2” binder of the David P. Campbell Postcard Collection contains postcards reflecting women in empowered, vulnerable, pitiful, and satirical situations. They appear in scenes of public activism, romance, and the once-mythologized American frontier. The postcards arranged by Dr. Campbell under the banner of “Feminist” reflect the stereotypes, themes, and gendered images that have remained attached to the feminist movement from its emergence in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to its incarnation in the twenty-first century. Postcard images demonstrate the intersectionality of gender and feminism by juxtaposing postcards satirizing women as masculine or domestically …
The Medium And The Message In Early Twentieth Century Postcards Picturing Courtship And Romance, Rosemary Herbert
The Medium And The Message In Early Twentieth Century Postcards Picturing Courtship And Romance, Rosemary Herbert
Student Projects from the Archives
This examination of representative postcards from the Lovers Portrait Vol. 1 volume in the David P. Campbell Postcard Collection will use the postcards dating from the early twentieth century and the messages on them to illuminate facts about postcard production, postal history, family relationships, daily life, fashion strictures, and much more. With each card inspiring a piece of detective work that brings to light a nugget of information about a time gone by, this work also generally represents the kind of curiosities that the collection as a whole brings to light. It is hoped that it will serve as a …

Show Your Stripes Research and Creative Showcase
My art gallery is a compilation of photography between the years of 2012-2016. Today, I do not do photography as much as I did back then. It was something not only that I was good at but it was something that I enjoyed growing up. I started off receiving a camera and taking pictures of things outside. I then begin to find small interesting things in nature like a lady bug on a leaf for example. As time went on, I developed a love for photography and expanded to specializing in editing, graphic design, and photoshoots. Photography is a hobby …
Narrative And Christian Education, Heather Van Itallie
Narrative And Christian Education, Heather Van Itallie
Celebration of Research
Story is often viewed as nonessential fluff, especially with an increased emphasis on efficiency. However, this project explored how developmental research and practical theology make it clear that Christian education, especially when ministering to children, ought to emphasize how children fit into the metanarrative, or Story of God and God’s people, as found in scripture. Specifically, my research explored Christian education as it is centered around the Biblical narrative, using a pedagogy that affirms narrative as an effective cognitive tool that leads students to understand reality and externalizes their internal understanding of abstracts. I then clarified that Christian education must …
Gangsta Rap As Political And Rhetorical Discourse, Emma Van Drie
Gangsta Rap As Political And Rhetorical Discourse, Emma Van Drie
Celebration of Research
The mid 1980s through the 1990s, during the War on Crime Era, was marked by radicalized fear regarding the observed threat of criminality to society. Politicians voiced their intentions to crack down on crime, and a close association of young African American men in low-income areas with criminality became widespread. During this period when anti-crime rhetoric, arguably manifesting as racism, permeated American media and culture, gangsta rap surfaced in predominately African American, urban neighborhoods throughout the U.S.
Gangsta rap played an essential and highly complex role in shaping political rhetorical discourse surrounding the criminal justice system in the mid 1980s …

Music Theory In Music Therapy, Laura Corrigan, Amanda Mcdonald, Amy Loertscher, Jose Ayala
Student Research Symposium
Participants in this group are Amanda McDonald, Amy Loertscher, Jose Ayala, and Laura Corrigan. Sara Bakker is our mentor for this project. She can be contacted at [email protected]. Music theory plays a foundational role in music therapy. The basis of music theory supports all forms of music. These musical forms can be manifest through performance, pedagogy, and even music therapy. To have a better understanding how to fully access these areas, a knowledge of music theory is required. Specifically, music theory plays a significant role in compositional settings within music therapy. Songwriting or composition is an effective form of treatment …

Ternary Through Time: Why Understanding Form Enhances Casual Listening, Mckenna Brunson, Danielle Casós, Nick Walker
Ternary Through Time: Why Understanding Form Enhances Casual Listening, Mckenna Brunson, Danielle Casós, Nick Walker
Student Research Symposium
This presentation will compare the use of ternary form from two different time periods to support our claim that ternary form creates an enjoyable experience for the listener because of the devices used in the form. We will be performing and presenting our analysis of Chopin's Nocturne in C minor (Op. 48 No. 1) and Friends by Joe Hisaishi. The first was written in the mid-nineteenth century and the second in the early twenty-first century, but both maintain a similar structure, showing the effectiveness of this form in creating memorable and gratifying experience. Our research on this topic will benefit …

Composition In Theme And Variations Form, Tyler Wray, Kaelie Gillepsie, Riley Sue, Morgan Holmes
Student Research Symposium
We decided to study theme and variations composition because we found that it is very relevant and applicable to what we are learning in our Music Theory class. Variations form is also accessible to listeners and beginning composers. We hope that after our presentation, those listening will feel more comfortable in listening to and creating their own piece Theme and Variations form is a standard form of musical composition where a simple, unembellished melody is used as a theme and then repeated several times with melodic, rhythmic, harmonic, or other variations. We will take a theme and variations piece, Mozart's …

Narrating Motherhood In The Hebrew Scriptures, Katie Rosenson
Narrating Motherhood In The Hebrew Scriptures, Katie Rosenson
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Old Testament theology, like many of its sister disciplines, is an area of study, which brings with it a problematic history. Moving through four distinct phases of methodology—(1) systematic, (2) historical or reconstructive, (3) dialogical, and now (4) narrative—Old Testament theology has often excluded voices, which have traditionally been viewed as “Other.” Thankfully, the budding narrative approach, which seeks to trace the development of the character called God in the Hebrew Scriptures, may create space for more voices to enter into the conversation. Divorced from many of the troubling consequences of the earlier phases of Old Testament theology, this approach …
How Moses’ Intercession Changed The Trajectory Of Israel (Exodus 33:12-23), Hannah Kent
How Moses’ Intercession Changed The Trajectory Of Israel (Exodus 33:12-23), Hannah Kent
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
The book of Exodus plays a crucial role in the development of God’s relationship to Israel, as the Israelites recognize theglory of YHWH and are allowed only glimpses of what they hope tosee in full. Exodus 33:12-23 is wedged between the Israelites’ golden calf idolatry and the renewal of God’s covenant with Israel. Moses’ intercession is the crucial turning point where God decides to keep His promise to be present with His people as they continue their journey through the wilderness. This promise is later realized as God’s presence descends on the tabernacle at the end of Exodus. In the …
Raising Cain: Interrogating Monstrosity In Beowulf, Victoria Pan
Raising Cain: Interrogating Monstrosity In Beowulf, Victoria Pan
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
In this paper, I explore the implications of the narrator in Beowulfdescribing Grendel as the "son of Cain." I use this reference as it applies to Beowulf, Grendel, and Grendel's mother, to interrogate what exactly it means to be a monster, and who gets to place this designation on others. What I find is ultimately, there is no true system behind who is the monster and who is the hero: one is simply favored by society, accepted as part of their "normal," and one is not. By walking through a series of parallels between Beowulf and Grendel, who both inherit …
Adolphe Appia: Unifying Acting Through Sets And Lighting, Zachary Payne
Adolphe Appia: Unifying Acting Through Sets And Lighting, Zachary Payne
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Adolphe Appia was not only one of the most important turn-of-the-century innovators of theatrical lighting,he also envisioned fundamental changes in the use of the stage setting and attempted to redefine theatrical art itself. He was both theorist and practitioner, the latter in the areas of scenography and lighting design. Although most of his writings address the relationship between light and music, he also envisioned a completely new approach to acting. For Appia, the stage space was dynamic and inclusive –he wished to encourage interaction between actor and spectator. His designs show his desire to unify theatrical production in a complete environment with the …

Finding Holes, Founding Theaters: An Exploration On Theatre Companies In Nashville, Eve Petty
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Nashville’s theatre community is growing at a rapid rate–new companies are popping up left and right. Nashville already has many well-established and professional theatre organizations, so why do new ones continue to emerge? Nashville is home to a unique theatre community that is still growing to fill artistic gaps. All kinds of theater companies —professional, semi-professional, and start-ups—fulfill a need. All three types will adapt to meet new challenges and fill artistic holes by any means necessary in order to make the community whole.

Musical And Social Trends In Twentieth-Century Colombia, Miranda Rojas
Musical And Social Trends In Twentieth-Century Colombia, Miranda Rojas
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
There has been only limited research into the musics of Latin America as a whole, and the amount of musicological investigation decreases when referring to any specific country. This presentation will provide a glimpse into the rich and diverse musical output of Colombian composers in the twentieth century. It begins with a brief overview of Latin American society and Colombian musical influences and social structures. Important Colombian composers such as Guillermo Uribe Holguín are discussed, as well as general trends in classical composition at the time. The musical output in Colombia is astounding and at least rivals, if not surpasses, …
Breaking Down The Fourth Wall With Artaud, Punchdrunk, And The Wooster Group, Megan Huggins
Breaking Down The Fourth Wall With Artaud, Punchdrunk, And The Wooster Group, Megan Huggins
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Antonin Artaud, a radical theatre artist working during the first half of the 20thcentury, developed a style and philosophy of storytelling called the Theatre of Cruelty. Artaud wanted to shock his audiences into an emotional connection with the people and situations around them. Hoping to shake the audience out of their complacency by combating realism, Artaud envisioned performances that would eliminate the fourth wall and confront the audience directly. Two contemporary theatre companies, the Wooster Group and Punchdrunk, adapt Artaud’s ideas to modern storytelling practices. The Wooster Group incorporates technological advances in its jarring, innovative performances, and Punchdrunk creates immersive and …

Surviving Imprisonment In America: Drama Therapy For Incarcerated Women, Kendall Crawford
Surviving Imprisonment In America: Drama Therapy For Incarcerated Women, Kendall Crawford
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
With the United States positioned as the leading nation in incarceration rates, the intentional use of theatre in order to achieve psychological growth and change within inmates is an invaluable asset to the healing of the imprisoned, specifically to incarcerated women who have undergone sexual trauma. Navigating prison for women is often combined with the trauma of sexual assault, as almost half the women in the nation’s jails and prisons were sexually abused prior to their imprisonment. With an emphasis on punishment, prisons often have the effect of retraumatization and revictimization rather than rehabilitation for abused women. Through the integration …

The Abusive Implementation Of Biblical Sexuality: The Not So Pure Purity Movement, Paige Huggins
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Words like “virginity”, “sex”, and “sexuality” hold a good deal of weight and importance inAmerican society and in the Church, but are Christians actually approaching them theway God intended? While the purity movement arose out of good and biblical intentions, the way it has been implemented through the use of guilt and shame-driven techniques has hurt just as many people as it has helped, if not more. Even those who feel it has helped them in many ways are walking around with underlying scars that can affect their friendships, dating relationships, marriages, or even the way they raise their kids. …

Accidentally Pioneering A Movement: How The Pioneer Players Sparked Political Reform, Sami Hansen
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Theatre in the twenty-first century has been largely based on political and social reform, mirroring such movements as Black Lives Matter and Me Too. New topics and ideas are brought to life on various stages across the globe, as many artists challenge cultural and constitutional structures in their society. But how did protest theatre get started? As specifically the feminist movement, political theatre on the topic of women’s rights can be traced back to an acting society called the Pioneer Players, which was made up of British men and women suffragettes in the early twentieth century. The passion and drive of its …
