La Batalla Del Cine Chileno: Chilean Cinema’S History Of Resisting Hollywood, Alexander V. Berdy Apr 2019

La Batalla Del Cine Chileno: Chilean Cinema’S History Of Resisting Hollywood, Alexander V. Berdy

Cinesthesia

The United States has been a global superpower for over a century now and that first place title also extends to Hollywood. Since WWI the Hollywood system has controlled the global film market by exporting their films all over the world. These American films took profits from many national cinemas but they have also influenced filmmakers worldwide to do some spectacular things; especially in countries like Chile. The story of Chile’s film industry shares a lot of similarities with European filmmaking. There seems to be a common theme of countries failing to beat American import films, then resisting the commercial …

I Have Not Always Been As Now, Bailey Knowles Apr 2019

I Have Not Always Been As Now, Bailey Knowles

Compositions

i have not always been as now is a four-movement piece for soprano voice, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and glockenspiel. The libretto is a reworking of literature by Edgar Allen Poe. I read through his entire output of poetry, isolated lines that I enjoyed, stood out, or triggered a musical thought in my head, and rearranged them to create a new story. The story is purposefully vague, and its specific meanings and interpretations shall be deciphered by the listener. The story follows someone who is recalling memories of a love from the past. This love could be a person, a …

Cinematic Auteurism, And The New Wave Sensibilities Of Sofia Coppola's "Lost In Translation", Benjamin Brewster Apr 2019

Cinematic Auteurism, And The New Wave Sensibilities Of Sofia Coppola's "Lost In Translation", Benjamin Brewster

Cinesthesia

This paper seeks to illustrate the auteurism and the cinematic influences present in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation, specifically through the lenses of the gender and historical modes of cultural film analysis. It argues that Sofia Coppola’s personal brand of auteurism permeates the film in a variety of distinct and important ways, and that much of the film’s success can be traced back to both her auteurism at work, and to the subtle but distinct nods made therein to the historical cinematic movement known as the French New Wave. It seeks to attack these ideas on two distinct but …

Knowing, Loving, And Being Through Excess: Creation Of Subject In Bertha Harris’S Lover, Kristin S. Bruckner Apr 2019

Knowing, Loving, And Being Through Excess: Creation Of Subject In Bertha Harris’S Lover, Kristin S. Bruckner

English Department Theses

This article is a psychoanalytic and feminist reading of Bertha Harris’s novel Lover, a text that deserves wider critical scrutiny and close reading for the theoretical implications it initiates. The novel presents an understanding of what it means to be both a woman and a lover, and it indicates the ways that these two ideas are intertwined. Although it was written in 1976, Lover portrays innovative feminist performances of subject which remain relevant to contemporary feminist readers. The subject this novel envisions is one who is able to enact a seduction that was unavailable to traditional conceptions of self under …

This paper proposes that Shakespeare deliberately incorporated speculative theology into Hamlet to stimulate religious scepticism. It explores the troubling implications of the ghost’s behaviour, cinematic adaptations of the murder testimony, and the characters’ moral failings in the purportedly Catholic cosmos of Elsinore.

Re-Purposing A Dead Mall Into An Art And Innovation Center, Veronika Gaska Apr 2019

Re-Purposing A Dead Mall Into An Art And Innovation Center, Veronika Gaska

Honors Theses

Many years ago, when the shopping industry was booming, shopping malls were being built one after another—more than were needed to support the population. They served as a hub for all kinds of people. But with time, the focus of the retail industry shifted to the convenience of online buying instead of in-store, which contributed in the lack of demand for retail stores, running them into the ground, and leaving the malls empty. Approximately 1/3 of the 1,200 malls in America are dead or dying. With malls emptying out, the future of these buildings comes into question. Either they need …

Modern Misconceptions On The Wall Of Separation: An Analysis On The Influence And Misinterpretation Of Jefferson’S Separation Of Church And State, Marissa Swope Apr 2019

Modern Misconceptions On The Wall Of Separation: An Analysis On The Influence And Misinterpretation Of Jefferson’S Separation Of Church And State, Marissa Swope

Senior Honors Theses

The symbolic concept of separation between church and state defines the relationship between government and religion. While Jefferson did not author the phrase, the third President of the United States promoted the philosophy of a wall of separation between church and state in his letter to the Danbury Baptists in 1802. Jefferson’s support for a wall of separation stemmed from a strong belief in liberty of conscience and relied heavily upon the conviction to protect religious liberty. Through an analysis on the contextual history of the phrase, the original intent and application of separation of church and state becomes evident. …

Advocating For The Use Of Poetry And Mixed Media Work In Analytic Processes, Jason D. Dehart Apr 2019

Advocating For The Use Of Poetry And Mixed Media Work In Analytic Processes, Jason D. Dehart

The Qualitative Report

As part of my analytical process of looking at data collected from a pilot study on the use of film in the classroom, I discovered that I had the space to engage in a creative analysis process. In this article, I propose that creative methods be employed when analyzing data. An arts-based approach to research (Barone & Eisner, 1997) led to two creative products for my research: Poetry, which has been used with research in the past (Cahnmann, 2003; McCullis, 2013) and mixed media. This article explores relevant literature about integrating poetry and other arts into analysis and serves to …

A Look Into The Tuskegee Study Of Untreated Syphilis In The Negro Male In Macon County, Alabama, Austin Valentine Apr 2019

A Look Into The Tuskegee Study Of Untreated Syphilis In The Negro Male In Macon County, Alabama, Austin Valentine

Student Scholarship & Creative Works

In the 1930’s there was growing concerns over a disease known as syphilis. With 300,000 new cases each year, coupled with the disease’s ability to create blindness, arthritis, heart disease and instances of premature death, the search for a way to stop the epidemic quickly was expanding. With such numbers the United States Department of Health needed answers fast (DiIanni 1993).

At this time, the United States was in an economic crisis left by the Great Depression. As a result, the U.S. Department of Health needed to find cheap test subjects in an effort to combat syphilis and prevent its …

The Cost Of Cheap Freedom And The Liberation Of Discipleship, Daniel Rhodes Apr 2019

The Cost Of Cheap Freedom And The Liberation Of Discipleship, Daniel Rhodes

Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article argues that the freedom of the market has in turn become a new form of captivity. Describing the freedom associated with market relations, as conceived by F. A. Hayek, as a negative and cheap form of freedom primarily exercised in a freedom from outside interference, I discuss the cost of fully embracing this kind of freedom to the common life of a society and its constituents, identifying its true price in pervasive fragmentation, animosity, and injustice. I will then contrast this view of freedom with the positive freedom of discipleship described as the new way of life (κοινωνíα) …
