Ten Commandments Of Teaching: A Culminating Education Project, Charlene Martin
Ten Commandments Of Teaching: A Culminating Education Project, Charlene Martin
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
During a senior capstone course in instructional methods, teacher candidates participated in a discussion regarding what the essentials are for good teaching in light of biblical principles—a discussion integrating biblical principles and content knowledge acquired as they progressed through the College of Education. Genesis 1:26-28 indicates that mankind was created to rule over God’s earth in His name. Arguably, this mandate is the basis for all civilizations and cultures. From this perspective, one purpose of school could be to give students power tools for exercising dominion; school prepares students for work and their work declares the Glory of God. As …
Missa Arirang: A Fusion Of Korean And Western Music, Imgyu Kang
Missa Arirang: A Fusion Of Korean And Western Music, Imgyu Kang
Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education
This article examines Korean nationalism in Cool-Jae Huh’s Missa Arirang; this sense of nationalism is an extension of a movement that began in the late 19th century. Missa Arirang utilizes elements from Arirang, a popular Korean folk song, in the context of a Missa, or Mass; the work consequently follows the typical structure of a Mass Ordinary. The first movement, Kyrie, morphs from Western to contemporary Korean style using predominantly Western techniques. The Gloria, which follows, symbolically brings peace between two feuding provinces by blending together their respective Arirang traditions, and the Credo continues to allude to provinces …

Twin Teachers: Advancing Understanding Among Secondary And Post-Secondary Composition Instructors Through Individual Connections, Zachary Garrett
Twin Teachers: Advancing Understanding Among Secondary And Post-Secondary Composition Instructors Through Individual Connections, Zachary Garrett
Student Scholarship & Creative Works
This project relates research-based efforts to develop a context-sensitive collaborative plan for instructors of English composition at the high school and college levels, providing a model for professional development and cross-border conversations among writing educators. Adapted from the “twin towns” or “sister cities” arrangements forged between municipalities in different countries with the purpose of strengthening relationships and promoting cultural understanding, this plan targets the cultural differences between high school and college instructors as a step toward incremental improvement implemented by educators themselves. The literature review establishes the cultural divide, describing the divide through discourse and practice, identifies effective practices for …

From Terrorism To Feminism: Live-Action Superhero Films As Reflections Of American Social Problems Post 9/11, Lindsey Poe
From Terrorism To Feminism: Live-Action Superhero Films As Reflections Of American Social Problems Post 9/11, Lindsey Poe
English MA Theses
Superheroes have always been used as tools of escapism. From their insurgence into popular culture in the 1930s, to their animation in television programs, and appearance in films in the late 1970s until now, superheroes have allowed audiences an avenue through which they could imagine an alternate, utopian reality. Through the analyses of modern superhero films, audiences are able to connect how the genre reflects larger social and political fears in the wake of such unexpected realities: fear of annihilation after the 9/11 attacks and existing in a potentially unsafe America following the election of Donald Trump. The superhero film …

Disabled Gods: A Critical Disability Studies Analysis Of Ancient Greek Myths, Haley R. Graham
Undergraduate Research Symposium
There has been a popularization in society of the Right hemisphere of the brain being responsible for creativity, and the Left hemisphere being responsible for logical and analytical thinking. However, it is not fully understood whether there is an underlying, neuroscientific basis to these claims or if such claims can be rendered factual. Recent studies have been conducted, revealing that right brained leaders emphasize in innovation and managing whereas left brained leaders focus on continuous improvement and planning (Kumar & Sharma 2016). The right and left hemispheres do possess interconnectedness, however as this study has shown, individuals tend to possess …

The Shadow And The Song, Talena Michele Mcneely
The Shadow And The Song, Talena Michele Mcneely
Student Theses and Dissertations
Throughout this creative thesis, I explore multiple themes such as love, sex, family, identity, mental illness, and loss in free verse form. Most of these poems are derived from personal experience, but I combine fantastical and/or surreal elements with my memories to distort them. Due to my academic background in analyzing modern and postmodern literature, my own work draws from similar manipulations of structure, language, and symbolism. I hope these opposing images and ideas come together to create simple but unique texts. In my critical introduction, I explore the history of free verse poetry and the nature of configuring lineation …
The Pedagogy Of Harry Potter: Teaching The Fantastic, Kayla Danielle Davis
The Pedagogy Of Harry Potter: Teaching The Fantastic, Kayla Danielle Davis
Student Theses and Dissertations
The many disputes regarding teaching fantastic literature are extensive, especially when the literature in question is controversial and/or directed at younger audiences. However, it is my personal belief that these fantastic novels, primarily the Harry Potter series, should not only be taught in the secondary and/or higher-learning environments, but even studied in-depth due to their versatility and personal appeal to audiences of all ages and identities. A course like this is needed in order to elevate the comprehension of literature through the lens of a worldwide phenomenon that so many people have both cherished and immersed themselves within over the …

The Emory-Tibet Science Initiative: Rethinking Cross-Cultural Science And Teaching, Kelsey Marie Gray, Arri Eisen
Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The Emory-Tibet Science Initiative was founded when the Dalai Lama invited Emory to develop and teach a comprehensive curriculum in modern science to Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns. The project was built to grow and nurture a two-way exchange between complementary systems of knowledge. In the 10 years since the first days of the pilot, the interactions between people and places and the scientific and learning processes have served as a platform for exploring teaching across cultures and enriching approaches to teaching and science more generally. As a result of these interactions, we expand our definition of inclusivity in the …

Practice Strategies Taught In The Band Classroom: A Survey Of Arkansas Band Educators, Candis R. Sunday
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the frequency and extent to which practice strategies are taught by band educators in the state of Arkansas. This study was guided by two research questions: (1) How do Arkansas band educators teach their students to practice strategically? (2) How frequently do Arkansas band educators teach their students to practice strategically? The Music Practice Instruction Inventory (MPII) was completed by 93 band educators in the state of Arkansas. The result indicated that most band educators provided specific instruction on “how to practice” daily in their classroom. It was also found that providing …
A Song Of Distant Memory, Andrew Devin Gadberry
A Song Of Distant Memory, Andrew Devin Gadberry
Student Theses and Dissertations
This creative thesis features a critical introduction, which discusses both the nature of the fantasy genre as well as my authorial process in creating this story. Our story begins as Ohku, Hunter of hunters, tracks a rabid beast through the depths of the mysterious dark forest of La'ia only to find that the creature is no mere beast. And when the hunter's path crosses with that of a fallen spirit, the creature’s dark nature begins to reveal itself. Yet, when Ohku returns to his village and warns the Chief and Warden of what he has found, he is sworn to …
