Fashion Merchandising: An Augmented Reality, Naeha A. Sayed
Fashion Merchandising: An Augmented Reality, Naeha A. Sayed
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
There is a continuous and constant transformation in the field of Augmented Reality (AR), both in the Retail, and the Manufacturing sector. It has started to influence everything from fashion runway shows to online shopping. Consumers dynamics have shifted in the fashion industry, the ways becoming more dominant than the old observant ones- the simple buying experience no longer satisfies them. Due to the emergence of the new digital platforms and technological enhancements, the consumers are looking for more- be it a more exciting buying experience or more user interaction or more enhanced products. This technological change starts with the …
Romanization Through Mosaics: Transition At Fishbourne And Colchester, Elizabeth Kurtulik Mercuri
Romanization Through Mosaics: Transition At Fishbourne And Colchester, Elizabeth Kurtulik Mercuri
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Romanization has been discussed extensively by scholars as a way to describe the acculturation of providences under the Roman Empire. This thesis will look at mosaics from two early sites in southeast Britain and examine their connection to the Roman Empire. Fishbourne, Roman Palace presents us with a detailed view of a private villa from the first century. The city of Colchester provides a non-elite, urban perspective from the second century. Both sites contain surviving mosaics that provide a lasting imprint of the visual and material culture that was valued in Britain during its early years under Roman occupation.

Raman And Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy For Forensic Analysis: Case Studies On The Identification Of Illicit Substances And Artist Pigments, Abed Haddad
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Raman spectroscopy is an effective tool for detecting trace amounts of material by fingerprint-like vibrational spectra. At times, the weak intensity of Raman scattering can make it difficult to distinguish trace materials. This shortcoming is addressed by surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which produces strong signal enhancements when target compounds are near metal nanoparticles. For the first part of this thesis, the identification of fentanyl and carfentanil, main culprits in the opioid epidemic, was done using normal Raman and the SERS spectroscopy. As an aid in the assignment of the spectral lines, a computational model was built using Density Functional Theory …

Costume Design For "Life Is A Dream" By Pedro Calderon De La Barca, Kelsey Looney
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The following thesis explains the process used to create and implement the costume design for the production of Life is a Dream produced at the University of Arkansas in the spring of 2018. In this thesis I will detail the process of moving from research, to renderings, to finished costumes. This design process includes a script analysis, inspiration collages, portrait gallery, sketches, renderings, production photographs, and an assessment of the success of the process overall.
When Fingers Meet Strings, Kara Joy Gibson
When Fingers Meet Strings, Kara Joy Gibson
Masters Theses
There is a great need for a current and comprehensive curriculum for young harp students. Most of the available instruction books and volumes are over half a century old, and while they have held up in some ways to the test of time, in many others they have fallen short. When Fingers Meet Strings is a fully comprehensive harp method book, meaning it can be used as a stand-alone curriculum for harp pedagogy.
Hispanics In Education: A Look Into Underrepresentation, Sarah Joanne Dillinger
Hispanics In Education: A Look Into Underrepresentation, Sarah Joanne Dillinger
Honors College
By 2045 the Hispanic population in the United States is projected to be at 25%. In Texas, that number is currently higher and continuing to rise. Despite large numbers of Hispanic students, they are underrepresented in schools among teachers and administrators. Could the lack of a cultural mirror play a role in this number since Hispanic students do not see as many Hispanic teachers and administrators in education? Through this paper, I will examine the cultural mirror theory briefly, but spend a majority of the paper analyzing the history behind desegregation in public schools. I will also review the literature …
Isolate To A Controllable Space, Simone Frances
Isolate To A Controllable Space, Simone Frances
MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs
Centered around the public arena of institutional architecture and its impact on the social being, in this recent work, entitled, Isolate to a Controllable Space, I focus on questions such as how do public environments work to sustain and reiterate meaning through our own sense of where we should be, or where we are permitted to be. I use photography to approach questions that ask how do systems and infrastructures obtain functionality through our participation; acknowledging that systems are conductors of the personal and participatory process of identification and categorization.
Science, Poetry, And Defining Life In The Romantic Era: “Life! What Is Life?”, Michelle E. Trantham
Science, Poetry, And Defining Life In The Romantic Era: “Life! What Is Life?”, Michelle E. Trantham
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
What defines humanity? Is it the soul? The body? In the early nineteenth century, these questions were not purely philosophical. Science, religion, politics, and literature were changing rapidly, and the question of “What is Life?” was central to the public and private pursuit of knowledge. One way to track the evolution of the question through the Romantic period is to look at the work of Dr. John Hunter, the originator of ‘vitalism’, which was the subject in the infamous the Lawrence-Abernethy debates. The question of life, and the nature of life, permeated the literary, scientific, and cultural spheres, influencing Romanticism …
A Defense Of The Resonating Role Account Of Meaning In Life, Gabriel Bruguier
A Defense Of The Resonating Role Account Of Meaning In Life, Gabriel Bruguier
Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The primary contribution of this dissertation is the development and defense of a novel subjectivist account of meaning in life—the Resonating Role Account (RRA). I argue that ‘meaning in life’ is an evaluative phrase applied when a subject’s pursues a unique social and/or natural role well, when the role(s) resonate with her, and when they maintain a minimum balance of her attention.
A defense of subjectivism over its competitors—objectivism and hybrid theory— is the second main contribution of the dissertation. These two theories are rejected on the grounds that they are not responsive to a subject’s central concerns. The arguments …

Poetic Representation Of Immigrant Bengali Women From Queens, New York: A Qualitative Exploration Of Narrative In Relation To Physical And Cultural Migration, Tabashshum J. Islam
Publications and Research
Poetic Representation of Immigrant Bengali Women from Queens, New York: A Qualitative Exploration of Narrative in Relation to Physical and Cultural Migration is a qualitative poetic inquiry and collaborative creative writing project. Five participants were interviewed and invited to engage in a collaborative writing process with the themes of immigration, cultural negotiation, and oral family history. All participants identified as college-educated Bengali women with a connection to Queens, New York, as well as being an immigrant or relative of an immigrant in the United States. From transcriptions of one-on-one interviews and personal notes, research-poetry was created to center on the …
"Devoted To Influenza": An Analysis Of English And Nigerian Archival And Literary Depictions Of The 1918-1919 Influenza Pandemic, Kendra Klein
All NMU Master's Theses
This project examines how the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic is discussed in memoirs, letters, and fiction. I focus on both British and Nigerian sources to compare how different areas of the world portray the cultural significance of this disease. In the first chapter, I analyze two unpublished archival texts: the letters of Dorothy Sutton (1918), a nurse during World War I and the memoir of Private H.J. Youngman (1969). Both sources, housed in the collections of the Imperial War Museum in London, describe the symptoms and scope of the influenza pandemic. The chapter also looks at Virginia Woolf’s novel, Mrs. Dalloway …
The Natural Mother Of The Child, Krys Belc
The Natural Mother Of The Child, Krys Belc
All NMU Master's Theses
The Natural Mother of the Child is a memoir-in-essays about Belc’s experiences as a transmasculine birth parent. These essays use text and images to explore parenting on the margins of both motherhood and fatherhood. They also examine the ways in which legal and identity documents are limiting in their ability to describe gender and family. Topics explored include pregnancy, birth, lactation, masculinity, top surgery, medical transition, the meaning of biological relationships between parents and children, and microaggressions against transgender people.
Finding Edith: Surviving The Holocaust In Plain Sight, Edith Mayer Cord
Finding Edith: Surviving The Holocaust In Plain Sight, Edith Mayer Cord
Purdue University Press Book Previews
Finding Edith: Surviving the Holocaust in Plain Sight is the coming-of-age story of a young Jewish girl chased in Europe during World War II. Like a great adventure story, the book describes the childhood and adolescence of a Viennese girl growing up against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the rise of Nazism, World War II, and the religious persecution of Jews throughout Europe. Edith was hunted in Western Europe and Vichy France, where she was hidden in plain sight, constantly afraid of discovery and denunciation. Forced to keep every thought to herself, Edith developed an intense inner life. After …
Mozart's "Mezzos": A Comparative Study Between Castrato And Female Roles In Mozart's Operas, Erin Gonzalez
Mozart's "Mezzos": A Comparative Study Between Castrato And Female Roles In Mozart's Operas, Erin Gonzalez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Scholarly work on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s singers has focused particularly on the soprano voice. There is a general neglect of attention on the low female voice—or what we would commonly call the “mezzo-soprano”—in his operas. As a mezzo-soprano and singer of Mozart repertoire (both female and travesti roles), I find it imperative that a comparative study of Mozart’s compositional treatment between both the castrato and mezzo-soprano voice be created to better understand Mozart’s style and intent for composition for these voice types.
This document is geared toward singers and teachers alike and will examine select arias of the castrato and …
Torrente And Manjón: The Visionary-Producers Of The Latin Fire Follies, Olivia Hernando
Torrente And Manjón: The Visionary-Producers Of The Latin Fire Follies, Olivia Hernando
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Latin Fire Follies was a musical revue that presented Latin culture through the use of the showgirl spectacle, music, dance and costumes. The show ran from 1968 to 1976 at the Thunderbird Hotel in Las Vegas. Creators Manolo Torrente and Freddy Manjón, were artists of international caliber before being forced to leave Cuba when Castro closed the borders in 1959. In 1968, Torrente, a prominent singer and director, and Manjón, an intrepid dancer and choreographer, produced the show with the goal of spreading the joy of Latin culture. The show was a representation of the folklore within the countries …
Riding My Bike In Paradise With Margaret Fuller: A Phenomenological Study, Nanette Rasband Hilton
Riding My Bike In Paradise With Margaret Fuller: A Phenomenological Study, Nanette Rasband Hilton
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Margaret Fuller (1810-1850) was perhaps the most famous American woman during the nineteenth century. After her tragic death, reprints of her best-selling books were heavily edited and she was nearly forgotten. During and after her lifetime, Fuller fell victim to the phenomenological alterity identified and defined by theorists including Derrida and Edward Said as Othering. She spent her career combating Othering in all its forms. Through the lens of both social identity theory and multiple identity theory this study examines how Fuller grappled with social prescriptions. As an autodidact, she mined diverse literary resources to construct heterogeneous texts that cultivate …
An Alternative Reading Of Feminist Criticism On S. Weir Mitchell, Erika Hylton
An Alternative Reading Of Feminist Criticism On S. Weir Mitchell, Erika Hylton
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation represents a renewed look at nineteenth-century physician and author, S. Weir Mitchell. This includes a discussion of how his “rest cure” fits into the medical and cultural trends of his era as well as revisiting the academic responses to both him and his cure. Those in the academy who write on Mitchell today are primarily feminist critics who approach him through the study of women writers who were his patients, such as Virginia Woolf and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, among others. The dominant pathway here is through Gilman’s short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” as well as other documents produced …
Stone Bouquets, Angelo Santino Ligori
Stone Bouquets, Angelo Santino Ligori
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The groundwork for Stone Bouquets was laid out in Donald Revell’s Poetry Forms: American Sublime course during the spring 2017 semester, resulting in a thirty-page chapbook exploring syllabic ecstasy through highly-compressed, experimental, and minimalist forms. Out of this work, the lines “stone / bouquets” prompted the questions: If a poem could be chiseled in––or out of––a block of stone, then how can that process––the work, diligence, and measurement put into each vowel, word, and line––be contextualized into a poem on the page? And if so, how can it be both seen and heard simultaneously? How are the fragments to be …
Irredenta, Oscar Oswald
Irredenta, Oscar Oswald
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
For my dissertation I am writing a book, IRREDENTA, which is a collection of three sequences engaging the pastoral legacy of American transcendentalism and the questions of the lyric “I” left open at the ends of modernity and postmodernity. The book is experimental in the vein of Language poetry and its precursors Gertrude Stein and Jack Spicer, while it also draws from the abstract expressionism of John Ashbery and Barbara Guest.
During my comprehensive exams, I surveyed the canon of pastoral poetry and the works of Henry David Thoreau, and in my creative dissertation I write within the visionary landscape …
The Pleasures Of Conversation: Samuel Johnson's Social Epistemology, Brandon Schneeberger
The Pleasures Of Conversation: Samuel Johnson's Social Epistemology, Brandon Schneeberger
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study traces the role of conversation in the epistemology of Samuel Johnson. Exploring the transitions of epistemology and pedagogy occurring during the Renaissance, I argue that Johnson pushes against epistemologies that overly stressed the role of reading. For Johnson, knowledge growth occurs through a means of reading, writing, and conversation: one reads broadly and deeply for information, one writes to make thoughts more concise, one converses to exercise, or test, those thoughts with others who bring various perspectives. This dissertation examines these ideas in Johnson’s epistolary essays in his periodical The Rambler, showing how Johnson’s ideas of conversation are …
Breaking Free From The Snake Strangling America, Kate Marjorie Shapiro
Breaking Free From The Snake Strangling America, Kate Marjorie Shapiro
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Breaking Free from the Snake Strangling America is a novel about the narratives of violence. It tells the story of Audrey Bishop and her investigation into her brother’s death at a mass shooting.
In the months following the shooting Audrey is confronted with various explanations of violence from her estranged parents, journalists, and televised sensationalism. She is at a loss for how to settle her own grief when the truth is stretched in every direction.
When Audrey is mysteriously sent Matthew’s journals, she is confronted with a new narrative, she sets off on a journey to find out the real …
Emerging Adults’ Identities, Attitudes, And Orientations Concerning Consensual Non-Monogamy, Amber Kory Stephens
Emerging Adults’ Identities, Attitudes, And Orientations Concerning Consensual Non-Monogamy, Amber Kory Stephens
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study considered the connection among aspects of emerging adults’ identities and their relational and sociosexual orientations as well as their attitudes toward consensual nonmonogamy (CNM). Results indicated significant relationships among individuals’ collective and social identity aspects, as dictated in the AIQ-IV, and how emerging adults label their relational orientations (e.g., strictly monogamous, monogamish, open, and polyamorous). Additionally, findings demonstrated that the salience/importance of social categories, roles, and reputations in one's identity influences how they choose to label their relational orientation, their attitudes toward non-monogamy, and their orientation toward uncommitted sex (sociosexual orientation). Discussion, implications and future directions follow.
The Ruins Of Doves, Mariah Tahera Yusofzei
The Ruins Of Doves, Mariah Tahera Yusofzei
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Ruins of Doves is a collection of 40 poems that attempts to access the conversational space for the poet’s encounters with her environment, and correspondingly, with the divine. Keeping with this sentiment, each poem embodies a little song or prayer, where the poem itself acts as a gateway in attempting to understand the divine. Amid the quietness in the space of the poem is where the poet explores her relationship with the divine. An understanding of community, domestic love, and intimacy share a point of arrival where many of the poems begin. Each poem is an accumulation and a …
The Art Of Healing: Mary Gove Nichols's Crusade For Women's Wellness, Marnie Nichole
The Art Of Healing: Mary Gove Nichols's Crusade For Women's Wellness, Marnie Nichole
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This thesis uses the life of 19th-century American reformer Mary Gove Nichols to explore antebellum feminism through the lens of health and marriage reform. Using primary sources including the subjects own personal publications, this thesis traces one theme throughout Nichols’s life: her passionate drive to educate women on their own health, and to make such knowledge accessible, so that they could acquire it for themselves. This particular theme manifested in two forms: wellness acquired via homeopathic medicine, specifically the water cure; and wellness acquired from a safe and loving marriage. Her life’s work, an early form of feminism, …
The Influence Of Interpersonal Dyadic Differences On Condom Use Among Men Who Have Sex With Men, Andrew M. O'Neil
The Influence Of Interpersonal Dyadic Differences On Condom Use Among Men Who Have Sex With Men, Andrew M. O'Neil
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS and other STIs. Condom use is one of the most effective methods of prevention, but rates of condom use have been steadily declining among MSM. Therefore, determining what factors influence condom use decision-making among MSM is important. Interpersonal factors such as physical attractiveness, race, and age have been explored in relation to condom use. However, there is a dearth of research exploring the influence of discrepancies between casual partners in these social categories and its influence on condom use directly.
Purpose: The purpose of this …

Population Movement And State Building: A Case Study Of Migratory Policies In Italy, Julia Pagnamenta
Population Movement And State Building: A Case Study Of Migratory Policies In Italy, Julia Pagnamenta
Student Theses
The current study examines Italian laws and policies around migratory movements since Italy first became a modern nation state in 1861 up until April 2019, when the research was concluded. This paper is a case study of Italian migratory policies. It first looks at the way Italy’s early efforts at nation building coincided with the mass emigration of its citizens, informing its policies on emigration and colonial expansion. The study then analyzes the way in which Italy developed a policy response to the growing immigrant and refugee population in the late 1980s following geo-political transformations in Europe. The evolution of …
