"Come Unto Me" As A Technical Gospel Term, Noel B. Reynolds Apr 2018

"Come Unto Me" As A Technical Gospel Term, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

In this paper I have reconciled the well established six-element gospel of salvation taught by Christ and his prophets throughout the Book of Mormon with the recurring invitation to come unto Christ and be saved. Once we can understand that most statements of the gospel in the Book of Mormon are formulated meristically—that where only a few or even just two of the gospel elements are mentioned explicitly, the full set of six is implied—the door is opened for a more precise account for the invitation to come unto him. In this detailed survey, I have shown that in almost …

Una Soldado En Cada Hija: An Analysis Of Women's Illicit Participation In The Mexican Revolution, Edrea Maria Mendoza Quintero Apr 2018

Una Soldado En Cada Hija: An Analysis Of Women's Illicit Participation In The Mexican Revolution, Edrea Maria Mendoza Quintero

LSU Master's Theses

Women’s contributions during the violent phase of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1917) have historically been kept in the shadows. When stories of their heroism were finally brought to light, what emerged was a new brand of heroine: the soldadera. She was either a loyal camp follower or a brave soldier. These women’s stories are remarkable, but the contributions of other women were often overlooked because they did not fit the soldadera mold. Some of those women were journalists and activists, others were nurses. As time has passed, these other women have also received their due credit for their involvement in the …

Jews And The Sources Of Religious Freedom In Early Pennsylvania, Jonathon Derek Awtrey Apr 2018

Jews And The Sources Of Religious Freedom In Early Pennsylvania, Jonathon Derek Awtrey

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Historians’ traditional narrative regarding religious freedom in the colonial period and early republic focuses on Protestants and sometimes Catholics to the exclusion of other religious groups; the literature also emphasizes the legal dimensions of freedom at the expense of its cultural manifestations. This study, conversely, demonstrates that Jews, the only white non-Christian minority group in early Pennsylvania, experienced freedom far differently than its legality can adequately explain. Jews, moreover, reshaped religious freedom to include religious groups beyond Protestant Christians alone. But such grassroots transformations were neither quick nor easy. Like most of the Anglo-American world, William Penn’s “Holy Experiment” excluded …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Percussion Works By Stanley Leonard, Kyle Douglas Cherwinski

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Timpanist, pedagogue, and composer Stanley Leonard has written over one hundred and twenty pieces for percussion, including solos, ensemble pieces, and method books. Several musical techniques are represented in his body of work, including traditional harmony, twelve-tone technique, graphic notation, and improvisation. The purpose of this document is to catalog all of these items into one source as a reference for other percussionists.

The document begins with biographical information, including his impressive performing career, his years as an educator, and the circumstances that led to his composition career. This required interviewing Leonard as well as reading several of the articles …

La Elisión De La /-S/ En El Español Del Caribe Y Los Estados Unidos, Andreina Isabel Colina Apr 2018

La Elisión De La /-S/ En El Español Del Caribe Y Los Estados Unidos, Andreina Isabel Colina

LSU Master's Theses

This sociolinguistic study explores the articulation of /-s/ in syllable-final position in the speech of Venezuelans that reside in Southern Louisiana and residents from Cartagena, Colombia. The results show similarities between both Caribbean communities, such as not favoring retention, and elements that differentiate the communities based on their geolects. One of the most significant differences is that speakers from Cartagena promote elision while Venezuelans that reside in Louisiana promote aspiration. Furthermore, the results show a connection between the time of residence of Venezuelans in Louisiana and retention. There is a great variety of studies about elided consonantal articulation of Caribbean …

“Black Is Powerful ”: A Gramscian Rhetorical Analysis Of Post-Racialism At The University Of Missouri, Taylor Bauer Apr 2018

“Black Is Powerful ”: A Gramscian Rhetorical Analysis Of Post-Racialism At The University Of Missouri, Taylor Bauer

Theses and Dissertations

The election of Barack Obama brought an uptick in discourse surrounding the notion of a “post-racial” America. This thesis will investigate post-racialism and the backlash surrounding its assumptions about the United States in the context of an act of resistance that took place at the University of Missouri in 2015. Black football players on the Missouri football team joined students in the #ConcernedStudent1950 activist group in calling for the resignation of university president Tim Wolfe. Threatening to abstain from athletic activity, Wolfe stepped down, signaling a victory for the minority student body. By utilizing Gramscian rhetorical theories and concepts, the …

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project: Report Of The 1999 Season, Nicholas K. Rauh, Luann Wandsnider

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project, 1996-2011

In 1999 the team turned attention to an area of mountainous rural hinterland behind Iotape and some 500 m above the valley of the Delice Çay and the village of Kahyalar.Employing coarse interval survey methodology we conducted a sweep of a network of ridges extending from a peak known locally as Nergis Tepesi to the village of Kahyalar below. When evidence of past human activity or disturbances was observed by the team, especially architectural remains or ceramics clusters of more than one sherd per square meter, the area became designated as a 'site', if only for purposes of recording. Once …

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project: Report Of The 1998 Season, Michael C. Hoff, Nicholas K. Rauh, Rhys F. Townsend, Luann Wandsnider

Rough Cilicia Archaeological Survey Project, 1996-2011

During the 1998 season the Rough Cilicia Survey team shifted the focus of our research to the discovery and analysis of rural sites and rural field tracks in the southern coastal portion of the survey zone (between ancient Selinus, modern Gazipasha, and ancient Nephelion (modern Muzkent). To learn more about historic landscape use in the area, the field team surveyed 21 transects comprising more than 17 linear kilometers of survey terrain. To record our finds we employed GPS tracking devices to track our progress on 1:5000 topographical maps acquired from the Tapu ve Kadastro Genel Müdürlügü (all sites are identified …

Linguistic Political Ecology With The Ngäbe Indigenous People Of Panama, Ginés A. Sánchez Arias Apr 2018

Linguistic Political Ecology With The Ngäbe Indigenous People Of Panama, Ginés A. Sánchez Arias

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Indigenous communities from all corners of the globe live in uncertain times. From the vantage point of their “remote" lands, they undergo some of globalization’s most harmful externalities. Their homes become increasingly harder to maintain as extractive industries, development schemes, clandestine land grabs, and national bureaucracies encroach creating new colonial lands. First by assimilation, and then integration, these processes systematically undermine indigenous culture and autonomy. In place of such destructive coloniality, indigenous societies shelter unique ecological and linguistic knowledge that continues to serve their progress. This research applies lessons learned from studying with Ngäbe communities of western Panama, towards a …

Mediating Gospel Singing: Audiovisual Recording And The Transformation Of Voice Among The Christian Lisu In Post-2000 Nujiang, China, Ying Diao Apr 2018

Mediating Gospel Singing: Audiovisual Recording And The Transformation Of Voice Among The Christian Lisu In Post-2000 Nujiang, China, Ying Diao

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

The contemporary gospel singing of the Nujiang Lisu in China’s southwestern Yunnan province seems to have been predominated by new media technologies and recorded popular mutgguat ssat music. The prevalence of Christian audiovisual recordings reflects more than a shift in the materiality of Lisu religious practices. Moreover, it speaks to the transformative ways that the Christian Lisu have engaged with technologies for their gospel singing as a practice of religious mediation. New musical styles and expressive forms have been disseminated through recordings and further institutionalized in the worship service and other religious settings. Drawing on a material approach from the …

Sonic Liminalities Of Faith In Sundanese Vocal Music, Sean Williams Apr 2018

Sonic Liminalities Of Faith In Sundanese Vocal Music, Sean Williams

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

As the Sundanese have come to lean on increasingly outward expressions of their Islamic faith – through the use of the Islamic headscarf and other fashion choices, as well as through musical means – it has been the women who have consistently provided the most obvious, outward expressions of West Java’s increasingly public Islamic cultural practices. The aristocratic sung poetry of tembang Sunda has its roots in the imagery and grandeur of the 14th-century Sundanese Hindu kingdom, Pajajaran. Songs that celebrate Pajajaran – the Golden Age of local culture – feature characters not only from the Ramayana, but …

Sounding The Congregational Voice, Marissa Glynias Moore Apr 2018

Sounding The Congregational Voice, Marissa Glynias Moore

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

Congregational singing is a participatory vocal practice undertaken by Christians across a wide range of denominations, yet the specific qualities and active capacities of the congregational voice have yet to be investigated. Drawing on recent musicological and philosophical perspectives on voice, I theorize the congregational voice as an active practice, illuminating its abilities to do something in worship through sound.

Taking Brian Kane’s model of the voice as a circulation of content (logos), sound (echos), and source (topos), I explore how these categories are redefined through an active-based theorization of congregational singing. I argue that …

Paralinguistic Ramification Of Language Performance In Islamic Ritual, Michael Frishkopf Apr 2018

Paralinguistic Ramification Of Language Performance In Islamic Ritual, Michael Frishkopf

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

Across time and space, Islamic ritual practices maintain certain fixed features while adapting to local environments, thereby developing a branching or ramified structure—though political, economic, ideological, or technological factors may cause certain local forms to globalize as well. Such ramification offers a means of interpreting the past as well as a window into religious meaning and the ritual process itself. How does such adaptation take place, what drives it, what is its social-spiritual meaning and impact, what can such a ramified variety across history and place tell us, and where does the essence of such ritual lie? In this paper …
