Race And Community : Coloured Identity Formation Within Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Cape Town, South Africa., Cornelius L. Sanford
Race And Community : Coloured Identity Formation Within Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Cape Town, South Africa., Cornelius L. Sanford
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
Historically, the "Coloured" identity within Cape Town, South Africa was used as an umbrella term to include all the cultures residing within the city that were not either European, or of South Africa's native Bantu speaking groups. However, the identity seemingly has now shifted to primarily refer to multi-racial people. However, if the Coloured identity was initially created as a catch- all phrase, then what shifted the term to now address those who are of multi- racial descent? This essay examines the progression of the Coloured identity within Cape Town society by tracking the rise and fall of Cape Town's …
Prevalence Of The French Language In Algerian Online News : A Remnant Of The Colonial Past., Zofia A. Hetman
Prevalence Of The French Language In Algerian Online News : A Remnant Of The Colonial Past., Zofia A. Hetman
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
A French colony for over a century, Algeria gained independence in 1962, yet its identity remains chained to its traumatic history. During the colonial period, French officials enacted laws to subvert the native population and its culture by discouraging the teaching of Arabic and, in its place, emphasizing French language and culture. Seeking to reclaim their national identity, leaders in post-independent Algeria created Arabization policies, which favored the use of Arabic and discouraged the use of French. Algerian society has therefore long been the target of linguistic control. As a result, language preferences of Algerians can be linked to the …
On The Politics And Conceptualization Of Gender Non-Conformity : Exploring Thailand’S Kathoey Population., Macey E. Mayes
On The Politics And Conceptualization Of Gender Non-Conformity : Exploring Thailand’S Kathoey Population., Macey E. Mayes
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the politics and conceptualization of gender in Thailand, drawing specifically on the Thai understanding of sex and gender with regard to the kathoey population. This work considers the solidification of a third-gender category and looks to the ways this solidification can inhibit the fluidity of gender and sexuality. It also analyzes the dangers of transnational advocacy and the superimposition of Western queer advocacy and theory on Thai gender identities. I approach this issue from an interdisciplinary framework that seeks to include historical, cultural, and theoretical perspectives. In examining anthropological research, critiques of …
"Do It Yourself": Origins Of Bay Area Hip-Hop, Alexandra Schumacher
"Do It Yourself": Origins Of Bay Area Hip-Hop, Alexandra Schumacher
Senior Theses
At the present, there is minimal scholarly research on the origin story of Bay Area hip-hop to compliment the various articles and books authored by hip-hop experts and artists. The consensus that emerges from the existing secondary literature is that hip-hop originated on the East Coast and later emerged on the West Coast with its own unique style. These accounts, while well documented, only include a few mainstream figures and styles related to the Los Angeles hip-hop scene. Looking past mainstream hip-hop, this study pieces together the origins of Bay Area hip-hop through both mainstream and underground key figures of …

The General And The Diplomat: Comparing Andrew Jackson And John Quincy Adams On The Issue Of Florida And The Transcontinental Treaty Of 1821, Samuel Aly
Tenor of Our Times
John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson both played critical, contradictory roles in the long, arduous saga of the accession of Florida which culminated in 1821 with the Adams-Onís treaty, a story which examines the development of republican sentiment on issues such as slavery, Indian relations, and foreign policy.
Creating A New World: A Historiography Of The Atlantic World, Sam Traughber
Creating A New World: A Historiography Of The Atlantic World, Sam Traughber
Tenor of Our Times
Atlantic History, the study of the transatlantic connections between Western Europe, the Americas, and West Africa during the early modern period, has grown in use and popularity in recent years. This paper follows the historiography of the Atlantic World from a 1917 article in The New Republic to the publication of a popular history on the subject with Charles C. Mann’s 2011 book 1493. It discusses developments and contributions from a wide variety of scholars including political historians, economic historians, social historians, biological historians, historiographers, and geographers as well as the influence of the transatlantic nature of the Cold War …

Paradise Entertainment's Feature Of The Week: Splint, Brittney Callahan
MFA in Photography and Integrated Media Theses
Watching television has been part of my daily ritual since childhood. Every time it was turned on, I was able to enter into new worlds that were exotic compared to my house. Each story on the screen filled me with hope, inspired me with passion, and took me to a place where everything, no matter how terrible, seemed to have a purpose, an arc, and an end. These visual narratives birthed the idea of an equational life, one that seemed simple and mathematical. After I realized that life couldn’t be firmly calculated, I decided to invent my own alternative realities …

Diversification Of Orchestras’ Audiences, Musicians, Programming, And Revenues: Transforming The Relevancy Of German And U.S Orchestras To Their Communities, Dina Marie Weineck
Diversification Of Orchestras’ Audiences, Musicians, Programming, And Revenues: Transforming The Relevancy Of German And U.S Orchestras To Their Communities, Dina Marie Weineck
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This thesis presents ways of how orchestras in Germany and the U.S can transform classical music into a vehicle for social improvement through the diversification of audiences, musicians’ body, artistic programming, concert experience, and revenues. The linkages between mission and funding models of U.S orchestras are being re-calibrated, striving for social relevancy and financial sustainability at once. This approach is contrary to the way in which orchestras have divorced their missions for on-site concerts as their primary product from off-site community programs as a secondary avenue. The purpose and mission set forth for these orchestras, respectively, must be viewed in …

Simon De Montfort Et Le Gouvernement : Statut Des Femmes Dans Les Statuts De Pamiers (Art. 46) Avant La Magna Carta, Marjolaine Raguin-Barthelmebs
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
Promulgated at Pamiers (Languedoc, France), 1stDecember 1212 by Simon de Montfort after its first great victory during the Albigensian Crusade, those Statutes (juridical texts) are known as the introductory act for the Coutume of Paris in Languedoc, and more specifically regarding heirs rights. Redacted for the administration of newly conquest territories, the establishment of peace and to promote catholic faith against heresy and Languedocians owners of the land, theses Statutes dispose on women in their three final articles. More particularly, the article 46 concerns nobles and heirs women and decides, thanks to matrimony institution, who (and how) they …

Gongshi Meditation On The American Prairie, Brandon A. Henry
Gongshi Meditation On The American Prairie, Brandon A. Henry
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The following collection deals largely with autobiographical work. Created primarily between 2007-2018, the following poems reflect the life experiences and reflections of a poet throughout his thirties. Largely tied to regionalism of the Ozarks, many poems in this collection highlight specific locales throughout southwest Missouri and/or northern Arkansas, and explore, thematically, feelings of loneliness, isolation, the struggle of faith, and the impact of displacement, both physical and metaphysical. Further, many of the poems feature a through-line, thematically, involving the bonds of family and the impact of death on relationships and the human psyche. Lastly, an appreciation for, and connection with, …
A Kingdom Of Priests And Gods: Angelic And Participatory Deification In John's Apocalypse, David A. Armstrong
A Kingdom Of Priests And Gods: Angelic And Participatory Deification In John's Apocalypse, David A. Armstrong
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Ancient Jewish and Christian apocalyptic literature contains soteriological narratives of human transformation that qualify as examples of deification in antiquity. One widely exemplified type of deification in ancient Jewish apocalypses and apocalyptic literature focuses first on the analogy between priests and angels, and then the gradual assimilation of the former to the identity of the latter. In much apocalyptic thought, God resides in a celestial sanctuary in heaven where angels serve a heavenly liturgy of worship and praise, and it is this reality which the earthly priesthood, temple, and cult mimic and extend into the human world, which led to …

Tangled, Shannon Marie Ashley
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis is a collection of poems. Much of my poetry is influenced by ideas of identity, particularly religious and sexual identity, and the ways identity affects relationships. As someone raised in a Catholic church from birth, religion has had a major impact on my life and perspective. I am no longer practicing but still consistently find myself considering the morals of the Church in my actions in a positive way. Catholicism will also always affect my relationship with my mother, who is still practicing. Much of my current poetry concerns my relationship with my mother, especially regarding religion and …

Variations In Black Media Coverage Of The East St. Louis Race Riot, Angela Rene Womack
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Research for this thesis was undertaken after first researching the East St. Louis Race Riot and seeing that there was an insufficient amount of analysis that had been done on black media coverage in US history overall as well as with the riot specifically. Three significant trends of black media were found my during research. East St. Louis Race Riots black media coverage during and after the events varied at the local, regional, and national levels. My research showed that three media outlets varied. The local media provided information that guided victims and volunteers as to where to go for …
The German Gamble: An Analysis Of The Energiewende Policy And Its Implications For Energy Security In Europe, Rachel Elizabeth Millsap
The German Gamble: An Analysis Of The Energiewende Policy And Its Implications For Energy Security In Europe, Rachel Elizabeth Millsap
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis examines energy security in Europe, through a focused case study of the German energy policy known as Energiewende, or “energy transition.” The subject of energy policy and security in Europe has moved to the forefront of debate in recent years. Germany in particular has embraced a radical energy policy that aspires toward a low carbon, fully energy independent industrial economy by 2050. From an analysis of Germany’s Energiewende, this thesis seeks to extrapolate insights that can be applied to the debate of European energy dependency, environmental impacts, and their economic considerations. Understanding the implications of Germany’s energy policy, …

A fairy may not be able to lie, but that doesn’t mean they’re always honest. Marine’s former classmate is dead—and this isn’t your typical 48-hour mystery. The crime scene is Fortune Glen, a realm populated by fairies who take great pride in their unique abilities, their inability to tell lies, and their peaceful behavior. Well, until now.
Marine is the only one who knows about this murder, and she plans to keep it that way— at least until she’s figured out who’s behind this travesty. When Marine is assigned a mission in the human realm, she does the unthinkable and …

A Natural Pairing: Social Justice And Theatre Education, Danielle Wright
A Natural Pairing: Social Justice And Theatre Education, Danielle Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Social justice curricula are often solely geared toward middle and high school students. I intend to prove that a social justice curriculum can be creatively paired with a theatre curriculum. I also intend to prove that social justice can be taught as young as pre-kindergarten. I will design a social justice curriculum for various grade levels, beginning with pre-kindergarten. Through research and age-appropriate strategies, I will develop curriculum goals and learning experiences for all grade levels. The curriculum is not an end point for teachers, but rather a starting point for theatre teachers who want to integrate social justice into …
Should You Judge A Book By Its Cover? The Authentic Relationship Between Religion And The Stage In Fiddler On The Roof, Godspell, And The Book Of Mormon, Patricia H. Oliver
Should You Judge A Book By Its Cover? The Authentic Relationship Between Religion And The Stage In Fiddler On The Roof, Godspell, And The Book Of Mormon, Patricia H. Oliver
Theses and Dissertations
Theatre and religion have often found themselves at opposing spectrums since Thespis stepped out from the chorus. This conflict usually plays out in the audience's response to what is presented on the stage. Fiddler on the Roof relies on the tradition and values of the Jewish faith to create an authentic experience for the audience. Godspell is based on the parables, mostly from the Gospel of St. Matthew. Some people have an issue with the fact that the musical doesn't have a resurrection, but Tebelak and Schwartz meant the play to reflect joy and community. Experiencing The Book of Mormon …
The Positive Developments And Applications Of Geospatial Technologies In Archaeology On Fort Benning, Georgia, Jane Mader
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the advantages of using geospatial technologies in the field of archaeology. The purpose of this study, conducted on Site 9CE16 on Fort Benning, Georgia, was to examine the ways in which Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be used to more accurately depict artifacts and features present on archaeological sites. With the research I gathered, I constructed an updated site map which can be viewed in Figures 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. The map produced includes more features than were initially mapped at Site 9CE16 and help paint a clearer picture of the structures which existed at the original …

The massively multiplayer online role playing game, World of Warcraft follows many leveling systems that spoon-feeds its players a steady and carefully calculated sense of progression, control, and power. This is part of what makes the game so appealing, as well as the intricate character creation and vast community-based elements. Millions of players share this world of Warcraft, as if it were its own real world (and in a way it is), and they do so with characters they’ve created and customized. What furthers this connection between player and character, and player and player, is how their characters move and …
"Several Sigourneys": Circulation, Reprint Culture, And Sigourney’S Educational Prose, Amy J. Lueck
"Several Sigourneys": Circulation, Reprint Culture, And Sigourney’S Educational Prose, Amy J. Lueck
English
In her now-famous essay "Reinventing Lydia Sigourney," Nina Baym argued that Sigourney's literary range "inevitably allows for the construction of several Sigourneys who are unknown to modern criticism."1 Since 1990, when Baym revealed Sigourney as a student of history and a writer of historical prose, scholars have filled the gap she identified with a variety of Sigourneys, identifying her "generic plurality'' as a means to "achieve multi-positionality as a woman poet," as Paula Bernat Bennett writes, and noting that Sigourney's wide-ranging oeuvre does not readily lend itself to a reading of the author as a sentimental poetess. 2 Subsequently, …

Foreign domestic helpers are one of the most common and unique sights in current-day Hong Kong. On the weekdays, they can be seen walking dogs, taking children to school, and completing chores around the house. On Sundays, they flood the streets in full force, relaxing and taking advantage of their one day off a week. This population faces many challenges during their time in Hong Kong – these challenges are modern as well as historical and include financial, governmental, emotional, and social challenges. Along with the challenges of day to day life, they also face challenges in that their stories …

Seventeenth-Century Basque Witchtrials: The Interaction Of Socio-Religious Norms Within The Contact Zone Of The Accused And The Inquisitor, Michelle Gizinski Earwicker
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
During the early seventeenth century, the Catholic Church sought to eradicate any belief systems that did not align with Catholic theology. In the Basque regions of Spain and France, these efforts produced a series of witch hunts between 1608 – 1614, in which the Church labeled as diabolical and nefarious the socio-religious belief systems the Basque people tried to incorporate into their practice of Catholicism. This thesis uses the confessions of accused Basque witches gathered during investigations and trials to explore Basques’ mention of pre-Christian symbols and beliefs, which I argue were often misunderstood by the Inquisitors as evidence of …
Becoming A Knight: The Social Transformation Of Common Mounted Soldiers Into Noble Warriors, Jared Dane Johns
Becoming A Knight: The Social Transformation Of Common Mounted Soldiers Into Noble Warriors, Jared Dane Johns
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Between the years of 1066 and 1119 CE, knights and their families in Western Europe rose from the highest stratification of the common folk to be included as the lowest incarnation of the nobility. This occurred primarily due to an emerging collective warrior identity among the nobility, the Catholic Church’s attempts to contain and sanction violence, and the implementation of the Three Estates political philosophy. This timeline challenges the dominant historical narrative on when knighthood transformed from a military rank into a social rank of nobility, which is usually placed sometime around the end of the 13th Century.
