One From The Beginning: A Proposed Apologetic For The Growth Of The Church From Ad 30-250, Douglas Taylor
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
“The oftener we are mown down by you, the more in number we grow; the blood of Christians is seed.” Why Christianity from its inception grew in numbers has remained a relatively stable and uncontested topic. Moreover, recent history has seen a move by some scholars to claim not one but multiple Christianities existed in the first three centuries. No study, however, has approached the growth of Christianity as being a result of positive apologetics and then defended that there was but one Christianity from the beginning through the use of Root Cause Analysis. After proposing an early fixed understanding …

"To Prevent Pernicious Political Activities" : The 1938 Kentucky Democratic Primary And The Hatch Act Of 1939., Raymond Michael Myers Iv
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
By 1938, popularity for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal had declined. The 1938 Kentucky Democratic primary, pitting Senate Majority Leader Alben Barkley against Governor A.B. “Happy” Chandler, became a referendum on the administration. During the campaign, each candidate accused their opponent of employing government resources to buy votes. This national scandal prompted Congress to enact the Hatch Act of 1939. Still in effect, this law restricted how federal employees interacted with political campaigns. This paper contends that the 1939 Hatch Act served as a constitutional backlash against the New Deal’s federal expansion and the rise of the administrative state. …
Remembering Agincourt: An Analysis Of King Henry V'S Impact On English National Identity, Nathan C. Harkey
Remembering Agincourt: An Analysis Of King Henry V'S Impact On English National Identity, Nathan C. Harkey
Tenor of Our Times
King Henry V is one of the best remembered monarchs in English History. Although he died at the untimely age of 36 after only nine years on the throne, his reign saw England's empire in France reach its highest point, an accomplishment that was actualized in the of the Battle of Agincourt. In the six centuries since, both Henry's reign as a whole and the battle itself have impacted the identity of the English nation in many ways. This paper analyzes the influence of these events on those who followed, ranging from the use of heraldry after the battle to …

Finding Valhalla: An Investigation Of Writing In The Mystery Genre, Patricia Shea
Finding Valhalla: An Investigation Of Writing In The Mystery Genre, Patricia Shea
Senior Honors Projects
John Truby states in The Anatomy of Story that, “Once you set up a hero and an opponent competing for the same goal, you must build up that conflict steadily until the final battle. Your purpose is to put constant pressure on your hero, because this is what will force him to change,” (Truby 94). Narratives often adhere to these principles, especially in the genre of mystery writing. In this genre, figuring out how your protagonist is going to solve their problem, and the steps they take to get there, is essential to laying the groundwork and clues for any …
A Girl's Guide To Nail Art, Emma Rohnstock
A Girl's Guide To Nail Art, Emma Rohnstock
Senior Honors Projects
Nail art has led me to be more creative in my life and helped me find my passions of film, photography, and art. I started sharing my nail art through an online blog, but wanted to formalize my interest through a book and possibly a publication in the future. By making this book, I wanted children who read it to learn a new skill and find inspiration in each technique. Nail art has allowed me to express myself and discover my creativity, so I hope this book will allow a younger audience to do the same. I wanted to share …
The Conservation Treatment And Technical Examination Of A German Impressionist Painting, Sara Kornhauser
The Conservation Treatment And Technical Examination Of A German Impressionist Painting, Sara Kornhauser
Art Conservation Master's Projects
This project details the conservation treatment of the painting Sommergluth (1893) by Hans (Johann Wilhelm) Olde, which was owned by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Imaging and scientific analysis is used to identify the materials and techniques used by the artist, helping inform the treatment steps. The painting’s most severe condition issue was flaking and cleaving paint along with copious amounts of dirt embedded in an unvarnished paint film with heavy impasto. The research and findings from this project have art historical value for the little-known German artist, with this project being the first known in-depth study. The stabilization and treatment …

Evaluating “Discovery Bible Study” In An Evangelism Program At African Christian College, Floyd Vidler
Evaluating “Discovery Bible Study” In An Evangelism Program At African Christian College, Floyd Vidler
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
The problem addressed in this project emerges from my understanding of evangelism. For me evangelism must include proclamation, discipleship, a reliance on the Holy Spirit, and the utilization of small groups. I see DBS as accomplishing these goals, and the problem of this work was to demonstrate whether this is true in the context of African Christian College and the surrounding area.
I used a method called participatory action research. I made it my goal to learn all that I could about DBS and then share this material in a classroom setting with my students at ACC. We then participated …

All My Friends: A Short Film, Derrick Owens
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The film that I chose to make as my capstone project is a slice-of-life comedy entitled, All My Friends. The idea for the film was originally conceived back in the summer of 2017, and the process towards creating a final production has gone through numerous script revisions, a two-week long casting session, the assembly of a large crew and extras, and an intricate editing process. The film was shot digitally and the style was meant to emulate some of the most filmmakers I admire most including Richard Linklater, Alexander Payne, and Alfonso Cuarón. Like any collaborative creative work, the …

Contaminated State: A 2-D Animated Short Film, Madelyn Kelly
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Contaminated State is a short 2-Dimensional animated film centering around a girl experiencing her final hours on Earth. Her poor health and dire state are a result of the constant stream of pollutants that infect her world. I feel very strongly about environmentalism and the need to talk about climate change, therefore my capstone was a reflection on what I wanted to say through the medium of animation. Contaminated State aims to draw viewers’ attention to the trash inhabiting their community and to take those concerns to the voting polls during the election in November.

King for a Day is a feature film script written by Joshua Feinblatt that follows a high school senior named Brian Fuller around as he becomes Principal for a day. For thousands of years, Native Americans lived in North America, including the Great Lakes region. In this specific area, they would create their own unique customs, traditions, and ways of living. In addition, they would experience times of great turbulence, as violence, slavery, and torture all existed in this region. In this midst of this complex sociopolitical world, the French entered. They colonized this area and called it New France. They called the Great Lakes area, the pays d’en haut. Both the French and the Native Americans living in New France and the pays d’en haut learned to accommodate and …
Consumer-Brand Relationships: How And Why We Form Them, Kristian Perez
Consumer-Brand Relationships: How And Why We Form Them, Kristian Perez
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Humans are inherently social creatures. For this reason, it is important to understand the role of social psychology in all other disciplines. This study focuses on the role of social psychology in marketing and brand management. The goal of any brand manager is to develop and foster a mutually beneficial relationship between brand and consumer. The nature of human relationships has been studied in the past and significant results have been found. The purpose of this study is to test if those results still occur when the relationship involves a brand rather than another person. Studies such as this one …

Amsterdam’S Red Light District And The Body Autonomy Of Sex Workers, Kathryn Pataki
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Can one’s sale of their own body ever be consensual? Is sex work inherently an act of violence against the body of which one buys? Feminists have puzzled over the politics of selling sex for as long as sex has been sold. While the selling of sex has been a polarizing feminist concern for decades, how are there so many mixed views that all are considered feminist in perspective? In analyzing the autonomy of sex workers, this paper focuses on the city of Amsterdam and its infamous Red Light District. Of importance in this inquiry is the examination of the …
Federal Circuit Courts’ Impact On Immigration Reform: An Analysis Of Judicial Ideology And Immigration Policy, Evanna Ojeda
Federal Circuit Courts’ Impact On Immigration Reform: An Analysis Of Judicial Ideology And Immigration Policy, Evanna Ojeda
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Regulation of immigration policy is an expressed power granted to the federal government in the Constitution; however, state and local governments often pass immigration policy legislation to address gaps in federal legislation. This research project seeks to understand the role of federal circuit courts ruling powers in determining the legal standing and substitute holding of merits for immigration policy regulation. By analyzing the political ideology of presiding judges and understanding the relationship between political ideology and judicial decision support for federal or state regulated policy, this project seeks to recognize the role of federal circuit courts in enhancing and shaping …

Understanding The Alt-Right Brand Through A Comparative Look At Internal Vs. External Rhetoric, Samuel Norton
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This project examines the communications of the alt-Right, a relatively new white supremacist social movement in the US. The popularity of the alt-Right can be attributed to not only changing social conditions leading to rising instability but also rhetorically astute uses of new media. The alt-Right has been able to define its brand as an anti-political correctness coalition, and to communicate that brand identity to the public. When the brand identity eventually fell apart, so too did the movement.ut.
Better Magazine: A Digital Mental Health & Wellness Publication For Women, Katherine Czeriwnski
Better Magazine: A Digital Mental Health & Wellness Publication For Women, Katherine Czeriwnski
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Better is an online publication that explores young adult women’s mental health and wellness. The publication showcases women’s journeys with mental wellness and provides helpful information and resources for maintaining and improving readers’ mental health. The phrase “mental health” too often carries negative connotations or is simplified to just mental illness. The purpose of the magazine is, in part, to educate people and show that mental health includes more than illness, even though treatment is a large component of mental health. Through personal accounts of mental health and service pieces to help readers, Better is a resource for improving mental …

In this paper, I explore the music publishing process as a whole and the possible income streams available for songwriters in the music industry. Though songwriters are not the only individuals that may receive royalties for their work, this paper focuses primarily on songwriters and music publishing. Using data collected from interviews and secondary research, I explain the steps involved from generating royalties to the payment to the songwriter. I explain the roles of copyright, performing rights organizations, music publishers, mechanical licensing agencies, and more. Though the system functions as is, I describe some of the issues with the processes …

American Space Monkeys: Analyzing Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club As A Transmedia Text Through Fan Appropriations And Commoditization, Danielle Bertolini
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
American Space Monkeys considers Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club in its relationship to changing iterative forms across media. It traces the narrative from its original publication in 1996 through the present day, examining the ways in which Fight Club leverages its status as a transmedia text to expand and commoditize the narrative; this is especially relevant when compared with another successful transmedia franchise, Harry Potter. Furthermore, in looking at Palahniuk’s independent and collaborative expansion of the narrative, as well as fan contributions and reactions to the text, this paper argues that, not only are capitalism and transmedia inherently tied together, but …
Bird Symbolism In Italian Devotional Paintings From The Thirteenth To The Seventeenth Century, Sarah Poisner
Bird Symbolism In Italian Devotional Paintings From The Thirteenth To The Seventeenth Century, Sarah Poisner
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Madonna and Child images represent a significant portion of the paintings produced during the Medieval and Early Modern periods. Beginning in the thirteenth century, Italian painters began to embed symbolic birds into these works to create further points of reference and significance. This paper will examine the long history of bird symbolism and why Christian artists used different species of birds to create specific meanings. Hundreds of Madonna and Child paintings which include a bird were made between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, but there has been no in-depth analysis of this motif in over seventy years. Since the publication …

Resisting Borders, Resisting Control: Examining The Multiplicity Of Identities In A Map Of Home And The Girl In The Tangerine Scarf, Zainab Abdali
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
In this project I examine identities as they are expressed through the use of language in the novels A Map of Home by Randa Jarrar and The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf by Mohja Kahf. Both novels are coming-of-age narratives of two Arab and Muslim-American female protagonists that depict their exploration of identity as they undergo experiences of war, migration, displacement, and racism in their respective contexts. I explore the protagonists’ negotiation of identity in the face of familial and societal pressure to conform to clearly demarcated categorizations of identity, arguing that the protagonists recognize clear borders between identities as …

A Focus On The Us Narrative: Does The New York Times Portrayal Of Women Living With Hiv And Aids In Southern Africa Perpetuate Hiv/Aids Stigma?, Boitshepo Monte Balozwi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The aim of the study was to determine the dominant and recurring frames influencing the narrative and media portrayal of women living with HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa, a region characterized by a low socio-economic status and the highest HIV and AIDS infection rates globally. The study analyzed 238 stories published in The New York Times from 1985 to 2017. Findings of the study show that news reports frequently associate sex workers and pregnant women to coverage on HIV and AIDS therefore stigmatizing them as vectors of the disease. The newspaper stories provided adequate socioeconomic context resulting in African …
