The Medicine Of Middle Earth: An Examination Of The Parallels Between World War Medicine And Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings, Anna Pfeiffer
The Medicine Of Middle Earth: An Examination Of The Parallels Between World War Medicine And Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings, Anna Pfeiffer
Undergraduate Honors Theses
J.R.R. Tolkien’s pioneering work of fantasy fiction, The Lord of the Rings, was written in a period of twelve years, starting in 1937 during WWII and ending in 1949 a few years after the war ended. However, Tolkien’s experience with war began in 1915, when he entered combat in WWI as a young second lieutenant. Understandably, Tolkien’s war experiences have led many fans and scholars to question to what extent the World Wars influenced his works. In response to these queries Tolkien adamantly denied any connection, stating in the forward to the second edition of LOTR that “The real war …
Storytelling Through Movement: An Analysis Of The Connections Between Dance & Literature, Zoe Hester
Storytelling Through Movement: An Analysis Of The Connections Between Dance & Literature, Zoe Hester
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Movement and storytelling are the links between past and present; both dance and literature have the same artistic and primal origins. We began to dance to express and communicate, to worship and feel. We tell stories for the same reasons: to learn from the past and to be able to communicate in the present.
This work explores the many connections between literature and dance through examinations of six dance forms: Native American, Bharatanatyam, West African, Ballet, Modern, and Post-Modern dance.
Developing A Mentor-Method Of Evangelism At Redeemer Lutheran Church, Rolla, Missouri, Nathan Kuhlman
Developing A Mentor-Method Of Evangelism At Redeemer Lutheran Church, Rolla, Missouri, Nathan Kuhlman
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Kuhlman, Nathan, A. “Developing a Mentor-Method of Evangelism at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Rolla, Missouri.” D.Min. MAP, Concordia Seminary, 2018. 196pp.
Past models of evangelism are not as effective as they once were. To meet a changing, post-Christian culture, a model of evangelism that better speaks in today’s context is necessary. To address this need, this project was born. The purpose of this project was to develop and launch a mentor-method approach to evangelism at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Rolla, Missouri. This was accomplished through the launch of a pilot group of 12 test subjects from Redeemer who worked through a 10-week …

The Rhetoric Of Academic Discourse: A Qualitative, Phenomenological Study Of Students' Self-Investigation Of The Acquisition Of Academic Discourse In First-Year Writing Courses, Barbara E. Morgan
English Dissertations - Archive
Whether at a four-year university or a two-year community college, students who choose to pursue higher education will likely be required to demonstrate their eligibility to enroll in college-level writing courses. At a vast majority of colleges and universities in the United States, such eligibility is determined through various means that include college placement tests, like AccuPlacer®, or other standardized assessments and determinants. Once students are deemed prepared or eligible to enroll in college-level writing courses, their academic journeys often include some form of the compulsory first-year English classes. These courses, also known as freshman writing or composition courses, have …
Clericalism: Advancing The Theological Basis For Vatican Ii's Call For An Active Laity, William Orbih
Clericalism: Advancing The Theological Basis For Vatican Ii's Call For An Active Laity, William Orbih
Obsculta
It is the purpose of this paper to echo the Second Vatican Council’s call for a more active laity by, on the one hand, drawing atten-tion to the theological basis of this call (baptism), and, on the other hand, identifying and denouncing clericalism as the biggest obstacle to a more active laity in the church.

Caught In The Crossfires : Changes For Women During The Transition Period In Iran., Lindsay M. Ruth
Caught In The Crossfires : Changes For Women During The Transition Period In Iran., Lindsay M. Ruth
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
This paper explores the various ways in which the roles and lives of women changed and continued in the transition from Zoroastrian majority Iran[1] to post-conquest Islamic ruled Iran during the 7th and 8thcenturies. This paper mostly utilizes secondary sources due to the author’s inability to read the languages of the primary sources. Through the various sources, the paper discusses the background of the time period in the sections on Sassanian Persia, women in Sassanian Persia, the Arab Conquest of Persia, women in early Islam, and the Transition Period. Then it explores the ways in which …
The Intimacy Of The Cross: Kenotic Love In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Sufjan Stevens, Kellen Troxell
The Intimacy Of The Cross: Kenotic Love In Hans Urs Von Balthasar And Sufjan Stevens, Kellen Troxell
Obsculta
This essay discusses how von Balthasar describes the relationship between the Father and the Son and how this has implications for the relationship between Christ and the Church. In addition, the author uses “To Be Alone With You” by Sufjan Stevens in order to further examine the implications of this relationship.
Instruments Of The Soul: Oikonomia And Bodily Asceticism, Aiden Putnam
Instruments Of The Soul: Oikonomia And Bodily Asceticism, Aiden Putnam
Obsculta
One strength of the monastic model as presented in the early desert literature is the pastoral responsiveness to individual needs, while one weakness of this model is the apparent divide between body and spirit. The current image many of today’s readers might have of the monastic desert is of wizened, brittle hermits continuously at war with their bodies in an attempt to subjugate the flesh. Rather, I would propose that the early monks can offer us a refreshing view of psychosomatic integrity, one that can speak to current discussions of pastoral accompaniment.
Hospitality And Contemplative Presence: A Local Reflection, Cindy Gonzalez
Hospitality And Contemplative Presence: A Local Reflection, Cindy Gonzalez
Obsculta
Nota Bene During an age of people not knowing their neighbors and of hurtful racial division throughout the United States, I find myself living in a small town. This reflection is a plea for people to look up from their smart-phones and welcome those who need hospitality. This is also a plea for all to become community-building advocates through contemplative presence.
Amazonian Reform, Alyssa Maty
Amazonian Reform, Alyssa Maty
Obsculta
This paper intends to show how Pope Francis’ ecclesiology and environmental consciousness are intimately related. Pope Francis calls on the church as a community to come together to preserve important environments like the Amazon rainforest from human devastation. This communal call is similar to how Pope Francis uniquely calls on the local church to be involved in general ecclesial matters.
The Cask Of Amontillado, Elysia Arntzen
The Cask Of Amontillado, Elysia Arntzen
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
This document details the process of creating an opera, from its inception through the premiere. Opera is a very large musical genre, and having a new opera premiered poses different challenges than other musical genres. I discuss the adaptation of the short story, The Cask of Amontillado , into an opera libretto, the composition of the opera, the production and directing of the opera, and what I learned in the process. In the conclusion, I discuss what I have learned as a composer and director, as well as how I can use this knowledge in future productions.

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
This work explores the juxtaposition of a live ensemble, and pre-collected field recordings. The material for the ensemble is divided into eight sections, or “scenes,” which unfold one after the other without pause, at times blending musical material to where it is unclear when the music has transitioned to the next section. The field recordings are divided into three main sections, which are defined by the underlying loop as follows: “sunny day recording”; “people talking recording”; and “rainy day recording.” Atop these structural loops, it is the responsibility of the “electronics player” to que other recordings in a manner that …
Harmonic, Tonal, And Formal Asynchrony In Robert Schumann's Frauenliebe Und Leben, Kelli E. Bomberger
Harmonic, Tonal, And Formal Asynchrony In Robert Schumann's Frauenliebe Und Leben, Kelli E. Bomberger
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
This thesis explores the asynchrony among form, harmony, and tonality in Robert Schumann’s Frauenliebe und Leben, Op. 42. Using several theoretical lenses, this study identifies and analyzes a selection of songs from this work that distort tonal, harmonic, and formal relationships and how the text setting may inform these distortions. This is shown through detailed analyses of several songs from the cycle that highlight areas of asynchrony. The first section of this document explores the background of Frauenliebe und Leben and draws upon other musical examples in order to establish working definitions of asynchronous elements. The following sections are …

Combatting Political Polarization Through The Use Of Civic Games, Meredith Coccoluto
Combatting Political Polarization Through The Use Of Civic Games, Meredith Coccoluto
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
During the terms of the last two presidents, the term ‘government shutdown’ has become a familiar one, as the parties work right up to the deadline trying to find a compromise on bills like budget and healthcare. This is reflective of America’s voter base, where people are entrenching themselves more and more firmly with a party, rather than remaining moderate voters. As America’s current college base is more polarized than ever before, this situation will only worsen over time as these students become the country’s primary voter base.
If a democratic voter base usually looks like a bell curve, political …

The Psychology Of Consumer Resistance To Advertising, Chi-Ching Lam
The Psychology Of Consumer Resistance To Advertising, Chi-Ching Lam
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Advertising has been used for a long time to support the large amount of content that people consume every day. However, the negative stigma associated with advertising has lead to increasing amounts of consumer resistance towards advertising, such as the problem of ad avoidance. Through a literature review, this paper answers the following question: how can understanding consumer resistance inspire more effective advertising? First reviewing the psychology literature, this paper explores the the origin and manifestation of consumer skepticism in response to attempts at persuasion. Cialdini’s weapons of influence provide a basis for the persuasive techniques commonly used. Counterarguing, attitude …
