Outer Space In A Western Place: How Environmental Perceptions Of The American West Shaped The Space Race, William Marino May 2018

Outer Space In A Western Place: How Environmental Perceptions Of The American West Shaped The Space Race, William Marino

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This thesis analyzes how environmental perceptions of the American West at the intersections of nature and technology shaped vital decisions regarding the space race. The analysis is first contextualized by pervasive political ideologies of the Cold War, which elucidates how these firmly held beliefs turned into political actions and transformed the post-World War II arms race into the space race. The author next examines the technological sublime, an awe-inspiring experience arising in people when they view impressive feats of massive, powerful, human-built machines, in this case nuclear bombs, and rockets. Where the nuclear bomb’s destructive capabilities eventually turned many Americans …

Nfl Cheerleaders, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The National Football League is one of those American entities that likes to think of itself as quintessentially American, embodying the very best of America. It has gone the extra mile to wrap itself in the flag and other markers of American “patriotism,” particularly those that cast a favorable light on the league and cost little or nothing in the way of effort and commitment. Image is the thing, substance is superfluous.

Catholic Marriage: Discovering French Basque Impediments, Tatum Frampton, Dr. George Ryskamp May 2018

Catholic Marriage: Discovering French Basque Impediments, Tatum Frampton, Dr. George Ryskamp

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 1563, the Council of Trent exercised fundamental societal control by enforcing marriage laws within the Catholic church which outlined in detail the process of marriage. Every Catholic marriage required a pre-marriage investigation.1 This new structure forbade couples from marrying within the 4th degree of consanguinity (blood relation) or the 4th degree of affinity (by marriage), nor where there existed a previous betrothal, impotence, one party not a Catholic, or the inability to read the banns if the bride or groom was not from the same diocese, etc. A waiver to any impediment required the overseeing bishop of the …

Boys To Men: Masculinity, Victimization, And Offending, Shon Michael Reed May 2018

Boys To Men: Masculinity, Victimization, And Offending, Shon Michael Reed

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Male victims are an underrepresented group within society as research within victimology primarily focuses on female victims and services available typically cater to female populations. This study focuses on male victims and draws attention to the role that victimization may play in criminal offending. Prior research has found that male victims may feel a diminished sense of their own masculinity. While other studies have noted that masculinity plays a role in some men’s decisions to engage in criminal behavior (Messerschmidt, 1993, 2016). It seems logical that these two concepts (masculinity and victimization) would be related. Utilizing self-reported data from 135 …

Splitting Hairs: The Creation And Dissolution Of Boundaries In Thirteenth-Century French Literature, Cassidy Devon Thompson May 2018

Splitting Hairs: The Creation And Dissolution Of Boundaries In Thirteenth-Century French Literature, Cassidy Devon Thompson

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Medieval authors often blur the boundaries between humans and animals in their works. In “Splitting Hairs: The Creation and Dissolution of Boundaries in Thirteenth-Century French Literature,” I study how medieval authors dehumanize people by inscribing bestial traits onto the human body via hair and hairiness in order to interrogate acts of self-definition, religious practices, social identity, and gender roles. The work examines a wide variety of literary and nonliterary texts of the thirteenth century including encyclopedias, medical treatises, hagiographies, romances, satirical poetry, and fabliaux. I explore how and why authors use the visibility, malleability, and shared human and animal quality …

Dying Worlds: Environment, Ecology, And Empire In British Literature 1878-1919, Susanna Williams May 2018

Dying Worlds: Environment, Ecology, And Empire In British Literature 1878-1919, Susanna Williams

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation argues that models of approaching environmental crisis in late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century British literature have been obscured by a false, mid-twentieth century, American-centered genealogy of environmentalism. As Victorian scientists made discoveries about deep time, entropy, and tidal drag, scientific and popular writers in the following decades came to terms with ideas about an earth made unfit for human existence and humans’ imminent extinction. Writers grappled with feelings of loss and grief, and they felt disoriented by time scales and energetic processes that were beyond the scope of a single human life. This overwhelming information required them to take a …

Fashioning Florence: Portraiture And Civic Identity In The Mid-Sixteenth Century, Stephanie Ariela Kaplan May 2018

Fashioning Florence: Portraiture And Civic Identity In The Mid-Sixteenth Century, Stephanie Ariela Kaplan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Despite intense socio-political upheaval, portraiture flourished in Florence of the 1530s-1540s. These works remain understudied, and are primarily examined in isolation from their broader context. This study evaluates a series of case studies to determine novel approaches to formulating identity through portraiture during the chaotic second quarter of the sixteenth century in Florence. Positioning the sitter as part of a collective, the artists and their patrons use assertions of civic identity to transcend a sense of otherness as they forge new identities and define new positions. Situated in the transition from republic to duchy, this project offers new insights into …

Melancholie In Uwe Timms Romanen "Rot" Und "Morenga", Darina Stamova May 2018

Melancholie In Uwe Timms Romanen "Rot" Und "Morenga", Darina Stamova

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation investigates melancholy in the novels "Rot" and "Morenga" by Uwe Timm presenting major topoi of the melancholic tradition as structuring elements of both novels. The discussion of the melancholic motifs of death, emptiness, philosophy and deficiency of language, building and architecture in the novel "Rot" reveals melancholy as a useful lens for understanding the novel’s reference to prevalent discourses of our time: construction of cultural memory and the Holocaust memory in particular, biological versus social determination, (im)possibility of utopia. But beside the melancholic topoi, another underlying element of the novel is the title color red with all it …

Frustrated And Confused: Mapping The Socio-Political Struggles Of Female Ex-Combatants In Nepal, Bishnu Raj Upreti, Sharmila Shivakoti, Kohinoor Bharati

Journal of International Women's Studies

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) declared an armed insurrection against the State in February 1996; they began to attack police posts and gradually the insurrection was sparked all over the country, lasting for ten years. Consequently, it caused 17,886 deaths, 79,571 displacements, 1,530 disappearances, 3,142 abductions, 8,935 disabilities, and left 620 children orphaned (MoPR 2016). In the armed conflict 20 percent of Maoist combatants were women. After several rounds of negotiations, the armed conflict ended in November 2006, with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the Government of Nepal and the then Communist Party of Nepal …

Gender Dimensions Of Food Security, The Right To Food And Food Sovereignty In Nepal, Yamuna Ghale, Kailash Nath Pyakuryal, Durga Devkota, Krishna Prasad Pant, Netra Prasad Timsina

Journal of International Women's Studies

The right to food is the right to life. Ensuring food security for all the citizens and their food sovereignty is the responsibility of the State. Currently, the need for food security, especially for marginalized and oppressed sections of society, including women in Nepal, is inadequately addressed. In this context, the main objective of this paper is to examine the gender dimensions in food policies and programs in Nepal. The paper explores five dimensions of food security, the right to food and food sovereignty, and analyzes gender inclusivity in food policies and governance in particular, since the advent of the …

Autonomy, Slavery, And Companion Animals, Heather M. N. Kendrick May 2018

Autonomy, Slavery, And Companion Animals, Heather M. N. Kendrick

Between the Species

I attempt to resolve the question of whether keeping animals as pets is akin to slavery by considering the significance of liberty to human beings and to nonhuman animals. I distinguish between two senses of liberty: preference liberty and autonomous liberty. Preference liberty is the freedom to satisfy the preferences that one in fact has. Autonomous liberty is the ability to satisfy the preferences that one might have regardless of whether one actually has those preferences. Preference liberty has a value for animals, but autonomous liberty is meaningless for them. As the core wrong of slavery is the restriction of …

Homenajes: Finding Spanish Identity In Falla's Orchestral Suite, Leanny Munoz May 2018

Homenajes: Finding Spanish Identity In Falla's Orchestral Suite, Leanny Munoz

LSU Master's Theses

Using biographical criticism, this thesis examines Manuel de Falla’s Homenajes (1939) as a reflection of the composer’s views of Spanish identity on regional, national, and international levels. Falla completed Homenajes—a four-movement orchestral suite dedicated to Enrique Fernández Arbós, Claude Debussy, Paul Dukas, and Felipe Pedrell—in Argentina. He began the work in Spain in 1938, during a period of great personal and political disturbance. In 1939, Manuel de Falla left Spain following the end of the Spanish Civil War, which cemented the regime of Francisco Franco. The Francoist regime notoriously aimed to homogenize Spanishness within the country, in part by …

To See From Somewhere, Ariel C. Wilson May 2018

To See From Somewhere, Ariel C. Wilson

MFA Thesis Exhibit Catalogs

To See from Somewhere is a series of monochrome sculptural and flat inkjet prints that expand space between traditional photographic binaries: black and white, front and back, flat and dimensional. On the surface, each piece absorbs light and reflects a dull gradient or graduated scale of tones. Lurking between shades of grey, they are gradual and metered in their transitions. I explore the boundaries of my ability to discern between two shades on a gradient and on a scale. I notice my reliance on observable difference to distinguish any given tone from another and relish the spaces where I cannot. …

Remembering The Revolution: Monuments And Commemorations Of American Revolutionary War Sites In New York, Brant W. Venables May 2018

Remembering The Revolution: Monuments And Commemorations Of American Revolutionary War Sites In New York, Brant W. Venables

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Memorials and monuments at military heritage sites track the ways American society constructs and then reconstructs its understandings of important events. They present enticing material culture for study by archaeologists seeking to analyze the layers of meaning and the social and chronological transformations in the heritage narratives at military sites. With the prominence of recent national discourses surrounding the heritage narratives presented by Civil War Confederate monuments, there is a paramount need for archaeologists to lend their expertise in material culture studies to these dialogues. I also believe it remains important to expand this critical examination of Civil War monuments …

Producing And (Re) Producing? Untangling Multiple Labour Roles Of Female Estate And Apparel Workers Of Sri Lanka, Prajna Seneviratne May 2018

Producing And (Re) Producing? Untangling Multiple Labour Roles Of Female Estate And Apparel Workers Of Sri Lanka, Prajna Seneviratne

The Qualitative Report

Inspired by the Marxist feminist thinking of women’s “productive” and “reproductive” labour in this paper I attempt to unbundle the multiply interacting labour roles of female estate and apparel workers as they work within the third world (postcolonial) context of Sri Lanka. Drawing on the belief that “knowledge” of women’s lives should be grounded in and informed by the material politics of everyday life, especially the daily life struggles for survival of women themselves, I employ ethnography from a feminist perspective as the prime methodological approach of this study. As such my paper unfolds as a “storytelling ethnography” where I …

What Price History: Politics, Commercialism, And Urban Preservation, Theodore J. Karamanski May 2018

What Price History: Politics, Commercialism, And Urban Preservation, Theodore J. Karamanski

History: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Historic preservation is the child of the city. In North America, the United States Conference of Mayors served as midwife to the birth of the modern historic preservation movement, when in January 1966, it issued the report With a Heritage So Rich. The report’s authors argued that in losing historic buildings and districts to urban renewal America was severing a vital link to the past. “Connections between successive generations of Americans—concretely linking their ways of life—are broken by demolition. Sources of memory cease to exist.” Part coffee-table book and part policy proposal, the volume laid the foundation for the …

Female Gender Stereotypes And Inequality Within Ursula Vernon’S Jackalope Wives And David K. Yeh’S Cottage Country, Breanna D. Perrin May 2018

Female Gender Stereotypes And Inequality Within Ursula Vernon’S Jackalope Wives And David K. Yeh’S Cottage Country, Breanna D. Perrin

Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections

Historically, fairy tales attempt to bring forth issues of femininity, typically surrounding domestic violence, oppression, as well as unequal gender relations. This paper attempts to utilize Ursula Vernon’s Jackalope Wives, as well as David K. Yeh’s Cottage Country to exemplify the ways in which modern fairy tales conform and reject previous notions of what it means to be a woman within fantasy. Furthermore, through analyzing content presented within both texts, this paper acknowledges their differing, yet failed attempts to abolish gendered stereotypes within literature, raising concern as to whether such social issues are so easily overcome.

East Asian "China Doll" Or "Dragon Lady"?, Joey Lee May 2018

East Asian "China Doll" Or "Dragon Lady"?, Joey Lee

Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections

This paper argues that the representation of East Asian women in popular media is harmful through its exaggerated portrayal of the ‘China Doll’, and ‘Dragon Lady’, ultimately further exoticizing and dehumanizing East Asian women, ensuring the dominance of the West. I will study these portrayals and their impacts through historical and modern film, modern magazines, and intersectional oppression that the restrictive categorizations place upon women of East Asian descent.
