“A Bright Pattern Of Domestic Virtue And Economy”: Philadelphia Queensware At The Smith-Maskell Site (28ca124), Camden, New Jersey, Thomas J. Kutys, George D. Cress, Rebecca L. White, Ingrid A. Wuebber

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Excavations at the Smith-Maskell Site (28CA124) in the Spring of 2011 by URS Corporation revealed a number of early 19th-century features behind what was once 318 Cooper Street in Camden, New Jersey. These features produced significant quantities of Federal period tea and tablewares, including a number of Philadelphia Queensware vessels. During this period Camden was beginning its transition from a scattering of sparsely populated villages to a city of summer residences and country retreats for Philadelphia’s well-to-do middle class. The likely owners of the Philadelphia Queensware found at the Smith-Maskell Site were among this prosperous middle class, and thus the …

World events preceding and including the War of 1812 led to American embargoes on imported British goods including popular Staffordshire earthenware ceramics, such as creamware. Philadelphia potters created domestic versions of these ceramics which have previously been misidentified. This will serve as a review of the characteristics of a Philadelphia-produced ceramic often identified as yellowware, but sold as Queensware by these potters. Review of pottery from several archaeological sites in and near Philadelphia provided a number of Queensware vessels for analysis. A comparison of these vessels provides a set of characteristics to aid in identification of additional examples of this …

This article examines the history of several manufacturers of American queensware in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and beyond. Our research reveals that efforts to produce queensware were more extensive and widespread than previously thought. This survey expanded as we discovered references to contemporary queensware potteries in other parts of the United States during the first two decades of the 19th century. In all, 14 queensware-manufacturing ventures are identified and described from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, what is now West Virginia, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Much of this research is drawn from period newspaper notices, advertisements, and surviving personal correspondence. The period …

This work provides the first systematic discussion of the Bodhisattva path and its importance for constructive Christian theology. Crucified Wisdom examines specific Buddhist traditions, texts and practices not as phenomena whose existence requires an apologetic justification, but as wells of tested wisdom that invite theological insight. With the increasing participation of Christians in Buddhist practice, many are seeking a deeper understanding of the way the teachings of the two traditions might interface. These annotated excerpts focus on his time in South Carolina, particularly in the region of the Waccamaw River, and give us an early description of the area that is now Horry (oh-ree) County, South Carolina from the viewpoint of an Englishman in 1734.

This paper examines literature to determine how travel reshapes the culture of spiritual seeking in the United States from the early 1800s to the modern era. As travel evolved, the experience of travel has changed over time and the reshaping of American culture reflects the impact travel can have in a region. This paper also analyzes the roles of Christian missionaries and Evangelists in reshaping the culture of spiritual seeking in America and it analyzes the spiritual experience that is recognized by both atheistic and theistic travelers.

Can ecstatic experiences be studied with the academic instruments of rational investigation? What kinds of religious illumination are experienced by academically minded people? And what is the specific nature of the knowledge of God that university theologians of the Middle Ages enjoyed compared with other modes of knowing God, such as rapture, prophecy, the beatific vision, or simple faith? As tutors, we are asked to do the same task on a daily basis. Because of this monotony, we can fall into a rigid routine that may have us saying and doing the same things. This article examines the leading causes of these rigid sessions and some helpful solutions. More precisely, it focuses on the critical aspects of conversation and how this simple idea can promote better tutoring sessions. A basic outline of a productive conversation is provided as a reference.

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

When I set out to pick a soldier for my first Killed at Gettysburg project, I did not know what I would find. I chose to research a Confederate soldier named William H. P. Ivey simply because he was born and raised on a farm, like me. As I did my research, I realized that Ivey’s life tells us a lot about the motivations and thoughts of a common southern soldier in the Civil War. Like most Confederate infantrymen, Ivey’s family was of the lower class and they were not slaveholders. Ivey, along with his brother Hinton, enlisted in the …

Evaluating Bad Norms, John Thrasher

Some norms are bad. Norms of revenge, female genital mutilation, honor killings, and other norms strike us as destructive, cruel, and wasteful. The puzzle is why so many people see these norms as authoritative and why these norms often resist change. To answer these questions, we need to look at what “bad” norms are and how we can evaluate them. Here I develop an integrative analysis of norms that aims to avoid parochialism in norm evaluation. After examining and rejecting several evaluative standards, I propose what I call a comparative-functional analysis of norms that is both operationalizable/testable and nonparochial, and …

One of the consequences of situating the U. S. as part of the circumCaribbean is that it creates an opportunity to examine important subjects—such as slavery, agricultural production, trade patterns, immigration, diaspora, travel writing and tourism—through a more comprehensive lens. Numerous slave owners had plantations in both the lower South and on the islands. Maroon culture created by runaways were common across the circumCaribbean, be they in lowland swamps or mountain retreats. Runaways also found refuge with Native Americans, leading to intermarriage and cultural exchange.
