An Uber Ethical Dilemma: Examining The Social Issues At Stake, Florence Chee Jun 2018

An Uber Ethical Dilemma: Examining The Social Issues At Stake, Florence Chee

School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Purpose

This paper aims to engage with the social issues emerging from the increasing reliance upon app-driven services, as they pertain to precarious labor and ethical standpoints in a digital era. Popular ride services such as Uber have been lauded for bringing much needed transportation services that are superior to expensive taxis or unpleasant or inaccessible public transit.

Design/methodology/approach

As a result of over three years of ongoing research and analysis, this paper is a comprehensive assessment of a number of social issues facing the integration of practices both signified and enacted in an economy driven by apps such as …

Self-Reflective Practices: Application Among Sign Language Interpreters, Stephanie Sowa, Campbell Mcdermid Jun 2018

Self-Reflective Practices: Application Among Sign Language Interpreters, Stephanie Sowa, Campbell Mcdermid

International Journal of Interpreter Education

This study examined self-reflective techniques used by English–American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters. While the literature on service industries suggests that self-reflective practices are beneficial(Goswell, 2012; Musolino, 2006), little empirical evidence of those benefits is found in the field of sign language interpreting(Dangerfield & Napier, 2016; Russell & Winston, 2014). Six interpreters were asked to complete an interpretation from American Sign Language into English. They then utilized a retrospective think-aloud protocol to assess their recorded target texts. The three novices focused on specific signs and errors while the three experts talked about the speaker’s goal. This reflects Russell and Winston’s(2014)findings in …

Evangelicalism And Capitalism: A Reparative Account And Diagnosis Of Pathogeneses In The Relationship, Jason Paul Clark Jun 2018

Evangelicalism And Capitalism: A Reparative Account And Diagnosis Of Pathogeneses In The Relationship, Jason Paul Clark

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

No sustained examination and diagnosis of problems inherent to the relationship of Evangelicalism with capitalism currently exists. Where assessments of the relationship have been undertaken, they are often built upon a lack of understanding of Evangelicalism, and an uncritical reliance both on Max Weber’s Protestant Work Ethic and on David Bebbington’s Quadrilateral of Evangelical priorities. This then gives rise to misunderstandings and faulty prescriptions for the future of Evangelicalism. This thesis seeks to remedy this situation by providing a robust diagnostic, not to refute Evangelicalism, but as a reparative. This reparative attends to the faulty responses of either over-dichotomising capitalist …

‘Mightier Than Marx’: Hassoldt Davis And American Cold War Politics In Postwar Ivory Coast, Abou B. Bamba Jun 2018

‘Mightier Than Marx’: Hassoldt Davis And American Cold War Politics In Postwar Ivory Coast, Abou B. Bamba

History Faculty Publications

Using the travels of Hassoldt Davis in Ivory Coast to explore the global Cold War in French West Africa in the 1950s, this article argues that the main line of confrontation in the postwar era did not always pit Americans against Russians. In many instances, the struggle for the mind and soul of Africans was between the Americans and the French. The study highlights the role of everyday technology in the expansion of the American informal empire. By focusing on Davis and the significance of low-tech artifacts, the article suggests that in our scrutiny of Cold War science/technology, we need …

The Effects Of Metacognitive Listening Strategy Instruction On Esl Learners' Listening Motivation, Corbin Kalanikiakahi Rivera Jun 2018

The Effects Of Metacognitive Listening Strategy Instruction On Esl Learners' Listening Motivation, Corbin Kalanikiakahi Rivera

Theses and Dissertations

Prior studies looking at the effects of listening strategy instruction on motivation have shown there to be a positive correlation between the two. However, the participants of these studies all shared a first language (L1) and were not enrolled in an intensive English program (IEP). This study aims to investigate the correlation between listening strategy instruction and listening motivation in an IEP classroom for students from different L1s. Listening motivation was recorded utilizing the English Listening Comprehension Motivation Scale (ELCMS) and strategy use was tracked with the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ). Pre- and post-test scores of 56 participants (control …

Procedural Level Generation For A 2d Platformer, Brian Michael Egana Jun 2018

Procedural Level Generation For A 2d Platformer, Brian Michael Egana

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Procedural Content Generation (PCG), as defined in the book “Procedural Content Generation in Games”, is “the algorithmic creation of game content with limited or indirect user input”. Whether it creates the levels by itself, or together with game designers, PCG is a method used to reduce the cost of designing games, and to produce an endless amount of game content. One of the main challenges that come with PCG is the desire to use PCG algorithms to create entire levels that are feasible, unique, and fun. This is especially challenging for games of progression within the 2D platformer genre; insufficient …

How Representation Of Game Information Affects Player Performance, Matthew Paul Bryan Jun 2018

How Representation Of Game Information Affects Player Performance, Matthew Paul Bryan

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The goal of this small experiment was to see if it could be determined whether or not user interface design and the way information is portrayed in a game can affect a player’s performance in that game. During this study, 26 anonymous participants selected one design of a timer from three different categories to be used in a simple, objective-based game. 10 different participants were then run through three levels of that game, with each level corresponding to a different version of timer. The amount of objectives completed were recorded, as well as their thoughts on which version they preferred …

The night began with a brief introduction from Dr. Robert Kinpoitner. Several things were brought up for discussion, and among those were the possibility of becoming a university, possible implementation of a trimester system, and the film festival. Writer-in-Residence, Barbara Novack, also spoke about the various poetry …

Reckoning With “Other Lies”: A Review Of “Everything Happens For A Reason”, Melanie Springer Mock Jun 2018

Reckoning With “Other Lies”: A Review Of “Everything Happens For A Reason”, Melanie Springer Mock

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "Everything Happens For a Reason and Other Lies I’ve Loved narrates the aftermath of Bowler’s diagnosis, reflecting on what it means to live well despite the specter of death. The memoir, by turns funny, thoughtful, meditative, and sobering, asks important questions about how we understand God in the midst of suffering and pain, especially when those facile mythologies we often turn to—everything happens for a reason, it’s all part of God’s plan, God is teaching me something—provide insufficient comfort for those who are hurting."

Russian Zoophonic Verbs Modifications' Domain. Peculiarity Of Synthesis, Irina V. Ivliyeva Jun 2018

Russian Zoophonic Verbs Modifications' Domain. Peculiarity Of Synthesis, Irina V. Ivliyeva

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

The article examines capabilities of Russian zoophonic verbs (those describing sounds produced by animals) to create semantic modifications. Using the appending inventory of zoophonic verbal modifications from novel sources, previously unused in lexicographic practices, the open (infinite) nature of semantic modifications' domain, its composition and the fluidity of its lacuna zones are shown. The structure of zoophonic verbal modifications is examined; verbal modifiers, non-typical for this lexical-semantic group of verbs, are inventoried. The obstacles to successful production of semantically modified derivatives during different stages of synthesis are classified by several criteria: denotative, semantic, and distributive. The research findings demonstrate the …
