In The Group Home: Disenfranchised Youth And The Creative Writing Workshop As Intervention, Alyse Bensel
In The Group Home: Disenfranchised Youth And The Creative Writing Workshop As Intervention, Alyse Bensel
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
Nationwide, creative writing outreach programs serve marginalized groups in the community, empowering participants to regain a sense of control through non-verbal creative outlets. In striving to maintain the humanity and dignity of participants, pedagogies for underserved groups call for workshop facilitators to accompany rather than instruct. Using the group home adolescent population as an example, this article advocates for future alliances between the academy and the community to serve local at-risk populations. This collaboration will foster interdisciplinary cooperation and develop service learning coursework opportunities for positive social change.
“That’S My Boy”: Challenging The Myth Of Literary Mentorship As In Loco Patris, Neil Surkan, Robert Mcgill
“That’S My Boy”: Challenging The Myth Of Literary Mentorship As In Loco Patris, Neil Surkan, Robert Mcgill
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
Literary mentors have long been mythologized as serving in loco patris: i.e., in the place of their mentees’ fathers. Focusing on depictions of such mentorship in Tom Grimes’s Mentor (2010), the anthology A Manner of Being (2015), and Debra Weinstein's Apprentice to the Flower Poet Z. (2004), we observe that these depictions repeatedly cast mentorship as dyadic, hierarchical, and homosocial. We argue that such depictions rehearse patriarchal norms with respect to literature, gender, and parenthood while fostering fraught psychological dynamics. Consequently, we identify a need for greater self-reflexivity about mentoring relations and a greater focus on alternative forms that …
Transatlantic Détournement? An Institutional Perspective On François Bon’S Reception Of Kenneth Goldsmith’S Uncreative Writing, Gert-Jan Meyntjens
Transatlantic Détournement? An Institutional Perspective On François Bon’S Reception Of Kenneth Goldsmith’S Uncreative Writing, Gert-Jan Meyntjens
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
This article investigates the ambivalent reception of Kenneth Goldsmith’s Uncreative Writing by the French author and writing workshop facilitator François Bon. Although admiring Goldsmith’s radical poetics, Bon hesitates when it comes to integrating digitally-driven uncreative writing methods in his own workshop. In one entry on his personal website, Bon proposes a détournement of Goldsmith’s experimental practices in the form of a return to the novel. To account for this ambivalence on the part of Bon, this article takes the contexts of American creative writing and the French atelier d’écriture into account. It argues that the novelty of Goldsmith’s project can …

Editor’S Note, Trent Hergenrader
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
One of the primary goals of the field of creative writing studies is to examine creative writing lore. Lore is anecdotal knowledge, often passed down through generations as informal advice and traditional knowledge that is often framed as appealing to our common sense. Lore is not necessarily wrong or bad; indeed, it usually has more than a grain of truth to it, which is why it survives and continues to be shared, like a folk remedy for the common cold.

"Have we authentically shared the gospel in ways that people can hear, see, touch, and taste? Has 'loving our neighbors' been genuinely, substantially, and sacrificially practiced?"

¿Se Puede Conjugar Activismo Queer Con TeologíA En La Rioja, Argentina?: Indecentando La TeologíA Latinoamericana De La LiberacióN, Damián Nicolás De La Puente
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
This article analyzes the impact of Latin American Liberation Theology (TLL) on the political militancy of the 1970s as a precedent for the movements of sexual diversity in La Rioja, Argentina. Currently, the militancy of queer movements in the province criticizes the Roman Catholic Church. Therefore, the aim is to analyze whether the Indecent Theology of Marcella Althaus-Reid can become an ally of the militancy of sexual diversity.
«NãO Há Lugar Para Mim Na Casa De Deus?»: Identidade E Espiritualidade De LéSbicas Brasileiras Na RegiãO Kanto, JapãO, Nilta Dias
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
Many Japanese Brazilian immigrants in Japan question their own ethnic, cultural and national identity. Considering the sexual diversity, many queer Brazilian immigrants add to this dilemma the question of sexuality. Living in the diaspora, many people —especially in times of difficulty— usually turn to friends or take refuge in religion. How do society and religious institutions in Japan —both Christian and non-Christian— treat queer people, especially women, and their spirituality? The purpose of this article is analyze the social and religious reality that —directly or indirectly— influences the life of queer Brazilian women in the Kanto region of Japan.

Towards A Destructive, Unmonumental, Queer Hagiography: FéLix GonzáLez Torres And The Spiritual- Activist Potential Of Destruction, Daniel Santiago SáEnz Tabares
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
This article presents an examination of two artworks by the late Cuban- American artist Félix González Torres, focusing primarily on the destructive strategies and theological potential of his work. After describing the activist and counter-monumental dimensions of «Untitled» (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) (1991) and «Untitled» (Lover Boys) (1991), the author examines these two pieces, as well as the artist’s life more generally, through the lens of queer martyrdom and queer theology to postulate a hagiographic take on González Torres’ life and oeuvre. Far from a definitive biographical study, this analysis is the result of interdisciplinary research mixed with …

El Sujeto Sexual En Las TeologíAs Queer: ¿Implicaciones Para Una TeologíA Queer Latinoamericana De La LiberacióN?, Beatriz Febus PéRez
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
The subject of human sexuality has always been the subject of various discourses that have generated different debates throughout human history and Christianity. Today more than in the past arises the discussion from the sexual marginality and it is queer theory that tries to give voice to these margins, and identities questioning the heteropatriarcal gender and the sexuality. In this way, the present article discusses the various aspects that queer theory brings with its beginning and then how this sexual subject produces queer theologies. Finally, some implications of queer theologies with Latin American Liberation Theology are discussed.

Feeling Of / Feeling For Queer Community: The Social Activism Of The San Francisco Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence, Jason B. Crawford
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
This interdisciplinary article explores the queer social activism of the San Francisco Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Based on over ten years of participant observation and archival research, I examine their rituals and public performances in order to illuminate the complex ways in which queer community is identified, felt, thought and lived out in response to social injustices rooted in religion. Using a theoretically informed lens, I alternate between academic and liturgical styles of writing to convey the feelings for, and feelings of, community that motivate and inspire the Sisters’ unique sacred clown aesthetic inspired by a desire to queer and …

Facultamiento Transgresivo: Queerificando Las Espiritualidades De Las Mak Nyahs De La FundacióN Pt En Kuala Lumpur, Malasia, Joseph N. Goh
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
The article explores the transgressive empowerment of mak nyahs —male-to- female transsexuals— by queering their spiritualities to reveal the multiple, migratory movements of gender identities. The essay seeks to expose the heterosexist persecution of mak nyahs that assume monolithic forms of Islamic religiosity. In so doing, it argues that the interminable resistance and transgression of oppressive sexual and gender normativities form a migratory praxis of power shifts that generate empowerment for the mak nyahs. The objective of such an exploration is to reveal and name in a more articulate fashion the passion and alacrity with which mak nyahs live and …

Voices From Verse: The Power Of Poetry For Seattle's Homeless Youth, Savannah Grace Hadley
Honors Projects
This paper is a creative nonfiction essay combining research, interviews, and personal experience to discuss how and why poetry is helpful in a therapeutic context, specifically working with at-risk youth. Pongo, a program that provides incarcerated youth an opportunity to write poetry, under the direction of Richard Gold, has found through survey responses that with the Pongo Teen Writing Method “100 percent of youth enjoyed the writing experience, 98 percent were proud of their writing, and 73 percent wrote on topics they don’t normally talk about” (Gold, 21). I came to understand, through time volunteering with the writing groups at …
"Our Shouts Echoed In The Silent Street": Paralysis, Symbol, And Implication In James Joyce's "Araby", Luke R. Farquhar
"Our Shouts Echoed In The Silent Street": Paralysis, Symbol, And Implication In James Joyce's "Araby", Luke R. Farquhar
Honors Projects
Critics, scholars, and readers commonly use paralysis as a means of interpreting James Joyce’s Dubliners. However, paralysis is ambiguously defined and can have a vague connection to the actual stories. This paper puts forward an interpretation of paralysis, that paralysis is a failed attempt at filling spiritual absence with presence. In order to examine our definition more fully, we then explore occurrences of absence and presence in James Joyce’s “Araby.” “Araby” depicts absence as a decaying, draining, and oppressive home existence, and it finds presence in romantic or mythic symbol. The illusory, nonexistent, and insufficient nature of these symbols …
Stakeholder Expectations Of Islamic Education, Julia Marie Ahmed
Stakeholder Expectations Of Islamic Education, Julia Marie Ahmed
Dissertations and Theses
Teachers and parents make considerable sacrifices to affiliate themselves with Islamic schools. As they commit to Islamic education, they acquire certain expectations that they want their school to fulfill. The purpose of this study was to explore the academic, social, and cultural expectations of five teachers and five parents in an Islamic School on the West Coast in order understand how these expectations could be fulfilled in other Islamic schools across the United States. The main research questions of this study were: What are the academic, social, and cultural expectations that parents and teachers have of their Islamic schools? To …
Latinas And Sexual Health: Correlates Of Sexual Satisfaction, Christine Marie Velez
Latinas And Sexual Health: Correlates Of Sexual Satisfaction, Christine Marie Velez
Dissertations and Theses
Latinas/os are one of the fastest growing and most heterogeneous minority ethnic groups in the US. One in 5 women in the US are Latina; by 2060, it is projected that Latinas will compose 1/3 of the female population. Latinas continue to experience disparities in sexual and reproductive health outcomes compared to non-Hispanic whites. While factors impacting undesirable consequences of sexual activity for Latinas have been well documented, Latinas' experiences with sexual satisfaction in the broader context of sexual health remains understudied, despite sexual satisfaction having been identified as an integral component of sexual health. A focus on positive sexual …
Anti-Lgb Hate Crimes: Political Threat Or Political Legitimization?, Johanna R. Shreve
Anti-Lgb Hate Crimes: Political Threat Or Political Legitimization?, Johanna R. Shreve
Dissertations and Theses
While activists and others have argued that the legitimization of biased attitudes and stereotypes by political leaders foments violence against minority groups, criminological research in the U.S. has focused more on "threat" hypotheses that view hate crime as a retaliatory response to perceived gains or encroachment of targeted groups. Another view suggests that heightened public visibility of hate crimes or other bias issues, usually in the form of media coverage, increases hate crimes. This study compares the effect on anti-LGB crimes of events representing political threat (a court decision legalizing marriage equality) and political legitimization of bias (passage of a …

A Story Of Feminine Sacrifice: The Music, Text, And Biographical Connections In Amy Beach's Concert Aria Jephthah's Daughter, Clarissa E. Aaron
Honors Projects
Jephthah’s Daughter (Op. 53), a concert aria for soprano and orchestra written by Amy Beach (1867-1944) in 1903, has long suffered neglect due to the fate of its manuscript and the fate of Beach’s work in general. This investigation seeks to probe how Beach engaged the Biblical subject matter and mid-1800s French text in her setting. I discuss this engagement through stylistic comparison with the musical traits of her other work, translation comparison between the literal meanings of the original poem and Beach’s English rendition, and contextualization of Beach’s setting within the history of how this story has been interpreted. …
Iago The Moor Killer: The Geo-Political Context Behind Shakespeare's Othello, Elisha A. Hamlin
Iago The Moor Killer: The Geo-Political Context Behind Shakespeare's Othello, Elisha A. Hamlin
Honors Projects
Shakespeare’s Othello is often viewed as an example of seventeenth century Renaissance binaries. Critics make distinctions when reading the play between hero and villain, Moors and Europeans, and between civilization and barbarity. These definitions are all complicated by Iago’s presence in the play. Iago, whose name implies he is actually a Spaniard, frames the play in a geo-political context. Because of Iago’s presence, Othello provides a picture of England’s position in the seventeenth century geo-political climate. Shakespeare is giving his English audience a particular political message.
