Redefining The Competitive Dance Indsutry: A Plan For The Dance Competitions Of Tomorrow, Stevie Mack
Redefining The Competitive Dance Indsutry: A Plan For The Dance Competitions Of Tomorrow, Stevie Mack
Honors College Theses
There is an absence of direct focus in the development of a dancer’s education within today’s competitive dance world, as current dance competitions have many holes in providing the proper training and education a young dancer needs. It is clear that dance competitions are for-profit businesses with a focus on making money, but it is time to turn these businesses into opportunities for growth, success, and a place where pure talent can be discovered and then launched into the next generation of professional dancers.
I am a strong believer in education. Therefore, I believe competitive dance should be another form …
American Tap Dance History And Proposed Preservation, Margaret Miller
American Tap Dance History And Proposed Preservation, Margaret Miller
Honors College Theses
The first form of dance conceived in the United States, tap dance, thrived throughout the era of vaudeville and the movie musical. Today’s society often overlooks tap dance beyond basic or beginner dance education; the history of the art from is even more so neglected. Within these pages, I will address the question of how the history of tap dance can be honored and preserved for generations to come. I feel so grateful to have had a tap mentor that valued the history of tap just as much as the technique and steps. Others in my field may not have …
Flying Closer: The Intersection Of Circus And Dance, Emma Thomas
Flying Closer: The Intersection Of Circus And Dance, Emma Thomas
Honors College Theses
Dancers entering the professional industry must consider whether to be a jack of all trades, able to perform any style and any skill, or a specialized performer who has achieved mastery of one specific technique. Because commercial dancers require a greater variety of skill sets, and jobs for commercial dancers such as cruise ships, backup dancing, and Broadway shows, are increasingly asking their dancers to perform aerial arts - and circus companies such as Cirque Du Soleil, and Circa are blending circus and dance, I am arguing that a dancer entering the commercial industry has to also consider the value …
What Are The Overall Benefits Of Dance Improvisation, And How Do They Affect Cognition And Creativity?, Carley Wright
What Are The Overall Benefits Of Dance Improvisation, And How Do They Affect Cognition And Creativity?, Carley Wright
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to define the terms improvisation, cognition, and creativity, and therefore find the direct correlation between all three, and how they can all be involved within dance. The main intention is to determine whether or not improvisational dance can positively influence one’s creative mindset, thus improving the cognitive learning process. Furthermore, it is to discover if the development of a creative mindset can be established through dance improvisation at an early age. In this exploration, the majority of my research will come from the examination of previously conducted experiments, as well as guiding and observing …

A Necessary Caveat: What follows is a response in the form of ideological critique. As a collective, our intent is to provide a view from those the author is writing “for” or about. This response is less a correction of “facts” than an ideological perspective, a view from those of us who feel it necessary to respond to Owens’s rhetorical choices.

The Methodist Church In Yugoslavia From 1945 To 1965: A Case Study Of An Ecumenical Protestant "Free Church" In A Hostile Environment, Paul B. Mojzes
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Though in size resembling a sect, the Methodists of the former Yugoslavia functioned as a Protestant “Free Church” due to its international structural connection with a large worldwide Methodist Church. After disparate beginnings in the two locations, the Methodist of Vojvodina began to function in 1898 while in Macedonia, the former Congregationalist (called Evangelical) began their work in 1870 but were transferred to the Yugoslavia Methodist Mission Conference after World War I. In Vojvodina, most of the members were of German and Hungarian ethnicity who had already been Protestants before they joined the Methodists while in Macedonia, the members were …

Problems In Japanese To Thai Translation -A Focus On Lexical Translation-(ปัญหาการแปลภาษาญี่ป่นเป็นภาษาไทย -การแปลคําศัพท์-), Somkiat Chawengkijwanich
Journal of Letters
This study aims to investigate the problems of translating Japanese into Thai, focusing on lexical translation, and also to explore the causes of the problems and to propose some ideas to solve these problems. The reason for focusing on lexical translationis that lexical translation is one of the most difficult tasks for translators (Imai 2009). The data used in this study are the Thai translations of 22 Japanese articles of various types such as news articles, letters, e-mails, speeches, novels, cartoons etc., translated by Thai learners of Japanese. Various problems were found and analyzed. The causes of the problems are …

Inferential Reasoning As A Means Of Avoiding Plagiarism In Paraphrasing, Atikhom Thienthong
Inferential Reasoning As A Means Of Avoiding Plagiarism In Paraphrasing, Atikhom Thienthong
PASAA
Paraphrasing is a signature practice of constructing intertextual discourse in academic writing. It is a story retelling technique commonly employed by academic writing classes to tackle plagiarism. However, teaching and learning of paraphrasing tend to place a very heavy emphasis on literal meanings of source messages and faithful reproductions of source meanings through new linguistic systems (e.g. altering syntactic structures, changing lexical forms, substituting synonyms), which may not effectively respond to authentic academic writing. Given this textual orientation, inferential reasoning which is essential in academic discourse tends to be relatively overlooked. To address this neglect, this article proposes an alternative …
The State Of The Intercultural Communicative Competence: An Exploration Through Trajectories In English Teachers' Discourse, Daron Benjamin Loo, Wannapa Trakulkasemsuk, Pattamawan Jimarkon Zilli
The State Of The Intercultural Communicative Competence: An Exploration Through Trajectories In English Teachers' Discourse, Daron Benjamin Loo, Wannapa Trakulkasemsuk, Pattamawan Jimarkon Zilli
PASAA
The history of English language education is punctuated with teaching and learning theories and approaches advocated by different communities of practice. One of such recent trend is the support for the integration of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in the English language classroom. To date, minimal studies have examined this extension of the English language classroom. Hence, to determine the teaching practice of ICC this study looked at the identity-in-practice and -in-discourse, as well as sources of pedagogical knowledge of four English teachers teaching at private institutions in Bangkok. This study employed a discourse analysis approach to first identify the participants' …
What Did We Learn Last Class? An Exploratory Study Of Student- Generated Review Questions, Christopher Nathanael Johnson
What Did We Learn Last Class? An Exploratory Study Of Student- Generated Review Questions, Christopher Nathanael Johnson
PASAA
'Student-generated review questions' is a classroom technique in which one or more students are assigned the task of writing a set of questions based on what was studied during a class. These questions are shown to all of the students at the beginning of the next class, and then discussed in pairs or small groups. The current study explored student perceptions of the technique. The studentgenerated review questions activity was run regularly throughout an entire semester with three classes of undergraduate students in a university in Bangkok. At the end of the semester, these students completed a questionnaire comprising Likert …

The Role Of Translanguaging In Improving Thai Learners' Interactional Competence In Dyadic English As A Foreign Language Tutorial Sessions, Tassanee Kampittayakul
PASAA
In line with the Global Englishes principle, translanguaging, the most recent extension of codeswitching, plays a crucial role in English language teaching since translanguaging is seen as an effective tool for communicating. This paper reports the findings of an observational study aimed at investigating the use of translanguaging to foster interactional competence (IC) development among Thai learners in one-on-one English as a foreign language (EFL) tutorials. Its objective is to explore extended learner turns and listenership, the defining characteristics of IC. Based on a zone of proximal development (ZPD) in the sociocultural theory (SCT) of Vygotsky (1978), translanguaging and IC …

Dadless: Dead Dads In Hamlet And The Effects On Their Children, Erin Diiorio
Honors College Theses
This research is a close look at the methods of grief as depicted by the children who lose their fathers in William Shakespeare's classic Hamlet.. The goal is to track each child's reaction to the sudden bereavement in a variety of physical and emotional manifestations. This has been done by first examining current literature on the text, followed by a review of historical context of the period in which the play was written, and finally analyzing each character's behavior. In doing so, this research seeks to highlight the importance of the presence of fathers within Hamlet and provide insight as …
Fluxus: The Significant Role Of Female Artists, Megan Butcher
Fluxus: The Significant Role Of Female Artists, Megan Butcher
Honors College Theses
The Fluxus movement of the 1960s and early 1970s laid the groundwork for future female artists and performance art as a medium. However, throughout my research, I have found that while there is evidence that female artists played an important role in this art movement, they were often not written about or credited for their contributions. Literature on the subject is also quite limited. Many books and journals only mention the more prominent female artists of Fluxus, leaving the lesser-known female artists difficult to research. The lack of scholarly discussion has led to the inaccurate documentation of the development of …

Examining The Measurement Invariance Of The Mmpi-A-Rf Externalizing Scales Across Korean And American Adolescent Normative Samples, Kristoffer Yong Park
Examining The Measurement Invariance Of The Mmpi-A-Rf Externalizing Scales Across Korean And American Adolescent Normative Samples, Kristoffer Yong Park
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory – Adolescents – Restructured Form (MMPI-A-RF; Archer, Handel, Ben-Porath, & Tellegen, 2016) is a newly developed instrument in personality and psychopathology and has been translated into many different languages, including the Korean language (University of Minnesota Press, 2016). Due to the cultural differences between Korean and American populations, it is important that constructs measured in the MMPI-A-RF are interpretable across cultures. Focusing on the Externalizing Scales, the present study used multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA) to examine the measurement invariance in Korean and American adolescent normative samples. Partially supporting the hypothesis, the results showed that …

Race, Rejection Sensitivity, And Identity Centrality Among Young Sexual Minority Women, Denise M. Calhoun
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This study examined to what extent the centrality of sexual and racial/ethnic identities were associated with rejection sensitivity in young adult sexual minority women. The relationships between sexual identity centrality and current alcohol use, alcohol-related problems, and sexual minority stress outcomes were also examined with race as a potential moderator. African American/Black and Non-Hispanic White sexual minority women 18-25 years old (N = 676) were recruited through online social media platforms, community organizations, and email advertisements. Participants completed an online survey that included measures of three types of rejection sensitivity (interpersonal, race-based, and sexual orientation-based), sexual minority stress, alcohol use …
Constructing An Early Modern Queen: Posturing, Mimicry, And The Rhetoric Of Authority, Megan K. Mize
Constructing An Early Modern Queen: Posturing, Mimicry, And The Rhetoric Of Authority, Megan K. Mize
English Theses & Dissertations
As the illegitimate daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, a woman executed for treason, Elizabeth Tudor stood at the center of discourses that often sought to contain or even destroy her. Early on, Elizabeth understood that constant re-invention, performance, and mimicry were key strategies for survival. When she finally ascended the throne in 1558, Elizabeth continued to use these rhetorical methods to retain her autonomy, as far as possible, garnering public support and the loyalty of her court. Although Elizabeth has long been acknowledged as a historical icon and has received considerable scholarly attention, particularly from feminist and feminist-leaning …

Exploring Factors That Enhance Career Advancement For African-Americans Across Various Criminal Justice Occupations: A Qualitative Examination, Antonio Jon Bryer
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
This study examined the factors that are important for African-Americans to reach executive-level positions within the field of corrections. Using nine semi-structured interviews with current and former executive-level corrections professionals, it was found that investments in social capital and human capital are the main career advancement enhancers. However, when it came to factors that were specific to African-American corrections professionals, a majority of the respondents mentioned proficiency as an enhancer.
Ethical Accountability Of Licensed Professional Counselors: A Comparative Study Of State Regulations And The Effects On Ethical Behavior, Kelly J. Doolan
Ethical Accountability Of Licensed Professional Counselors: A Comparative Study Of State Regulations And The Effects On Ethical Behavior, Kelly J. Doolan
School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations
Accountability is an integral aspect of occupational regulation and professional licensure and helps to promote ethical behavior within professional occupations. States have the autonomy to implement laws and enact sanctions against professionals who are in violation of the regulations and professional norms of the field. This research explores accountability and ethical behavior in the licensed professional counselor occupation. The purpose is twofold, it examines how states vary in their approach to setting legal and professional accountability measures as defined by minimum requirements for education and practice and it explores the relationship between ethical outcomes as defined by disciplinary violations and …

Risk And Resiliency Factors Affecting The College Adjustment Of Students With Intersectional Ethnocultural Minority And Lgbtq Identities, Stacey Christina Fernandes
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Adjustment to college has been demonstrated to be a multifaceted process with several developmental challenges for young adults entering higher education. As colleges and universities in the United States increase in racial and ethnocultural diversity and as LGBTQ students become more visible on campus, it has become crucial to cater support services and interventions to their specific needs. This study used archival data to examine the relationships between gender identity, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, risk and resilience factors, and college adjustment in a sample of treatment-seeking students at four-year institutions nationwide. The data were analyzed using three three-way multivariate analyses of …

Doctoral Students' Perceived Needs And Preferences For Supervisors' Written Feedback, Yenus Nurie
PASAA
This study examines doctorial students' needs and preferences for written feedback on thesis writing from supervisors. Several studies have explored students' preferences for written feedback to respond to students writing in the classroom. However, relatively little or no research has been previously reported about what aspects of written feedback (content, generic or linguistic) are preferred by PhD students to thesis writing in the Ethiopian context. A questionnaire was administered and collected from fifty one doctoral candidates who were currently pursuing their projects in four disciplines. Participants were purposefully selected to complete a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the …

“The Most Turbulent And Most Traumatic Years In Recent Mexican-American History”: Police Violence And The Civil Rights Struggle In 1970s Texas, Brent M. S. Campney
History Faculty Publications
This study builds upon a flurry of scholarship focused on racist (primarily mob) violence against Mexican Americans—indeed, persons of Mexican descent broadly—in the American Southwest since 1848. Some scholars have examined the history of mob violence, particularly lynching, against persons of Mexican descent from 1848 to 1928 in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. Although these southwestern states [End Page 34] had their share of such violence, historians William D. Carrigan and Clive Webb concluded that Texas was singular: Anglo Texans “were almost universally regarded as possessing the greatest animosity toward Mexicans.” Others have focused on mob and police violence. …

This essay offers a reflection about the increasing influence of profit in Catholic health care. Based on Jesus' teaching that shows that the need of the wounded person on the street comes first (Luke 10: 25-37), Catholic health care ministry has the challenge to create services where people, not profit, come first.

"I have never felt so shocked nor so ashamed as I felt while listening to the world media about the bloody London Bridge attack claiming to be carried out "in the name of Allah." I cannot accept it because this is not my faith. This is not the Allah I believe in. My Allah is not a hater! My Allah is not violent! My faith is not the knife! Bones I Found In The Garden, Alena Indigo Anne Sullivan
Bones I Found In The Garden, Alena Indigo Anne Sullivan
Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones
This collection is a volume of small, intimate moments portrayed in both poetry and prose. Rather than grand, operatic plots telling convoluted stories, this work speaks of the magic in simple things, looking in at personal (and often difficult) moments—the process of finding the beauty in ugly things, finding the crumbs of human emotion that slip through the cracks—lending them the attention they are due but often fail to receive. This collection digs up potsherds of childhood trauma, bones of old romances, and ghosts of things that will never be, all presented to the reader through the lens of fantasy. …
