Influences Of Culture From Outside Asean: Values, Lifestyle, And Arts Study In Thailand And Laos, Khanobbhorn Wattanasukchai Sangvanich, Yootthana Chuppunnarat

Journal of Urban Culture Research

Social change in the 21st century has caused changes in three areas: economic, social, and culture. The UNESCO (2003 as cited in the Institute for Research on Law, 2009) categorizes culture into two types: tangible culture which includes those concerning objects with expressive symbols, for example, languages, manners, attire, technology, and various forms of art; and intangible culture, which concerns the mind, for instance, notions, beliefs, values. Feldman (1996) propose that learning art has an important role to play in developing various senses. These are the basic ways to accept, maintain and convey culture that relate to values and way …

Atheoretical And Methodological Review Of Web-Based Instruction For English Language Teachers, Piyapan Kantisa, Pragasit Sitthitikul

PASAA

This article aims to provide an extensive review of web-based instruction (WBI), implemented within the realm of English language teaching (ELT). WBI is a teaching method that utilizes computer technology to promote learning experiences by leveraging the internet and web applications. It is suggested that educators carefully consider the related elements of age, affiliation, internet access, technological skills, educational needs, culture, interests, motivation and expectation when implementing WBI. In order for this model to be successfully implemented, educators can adhere to the following seven stages of the WBI framework: construct and objective identification, prior knowledge testing, learning objectives modification, learning …

Don Quixote In Russia In The Early Twentieth Century: The Problem Of Perception And Interpretation, Slav N. Gratchev Phd Jul 2018

Don Quixote In Russia In The Early Twentieth Century: The Problem Of Perception And Interpretation, Slav N. Gratchev Phd

Modern Languages Faculty Research

This study logically continues my previous examination of the perception of Don Quixote in Russia throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and how this perception changed over time. In this new article, I will again use a number of materials inaccessible to English-speaking scholars to demonstrate how the perception of Don Quixote by Russian intelligentsia shifted from humorous to complete admiration and even idealization of the hero. Don Quixote was more and more frequently compared with Prometheus, the most powerful and most romanticized personage of Greek methodology. Indeed, “начав юмористический роман, осмеивающий увлечение современников рыцарскими похождениями, Сервантес и не думал, …

La Nacionalización De La Estrategia En Torno A La Inteligencia Artificial. Estado, Política Y Futuro, Juan Luis Suárez

CulturePlex Lab Publications

Beyond The Assessment:
How To Truly Discover Your Purpose And Thrive In Your Gifts, Kevin Wilson

Master of Arts in Ministerial Leadership (MAML)

For too many years, Christians have relied on the results of a spiritual questionnaire to determine the role they are supposed to play in the body of Christ without every truly understanding why their gifts are so significant in the first place. This project is designed to help people better understand the purpose of spiritual gifts and to offer new approaches to discovering those gifts. It is also designed to help church leaders place a greater emphasis on helping their people find the best place to exercise their gifts within their local body. When individual believers and church leaders are …

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Story of the Predestined Pilgrim and His Brother Reprobate, published in Portugal in 1682, is an allegorical novel originally written in Portuguese by Father Alexandre de Gusmão (1629–1724) in the Jesuit mission territory of Brazil. Subsequent editions were printed in both Portuguese and Spanish in Europe and the Americas. Christopher C. Lund’s translation is part of the Latin America series in the Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies and is the first English-language edition. It is a welcome addition to scholarly work in the fields of colonial Latin American history and Jesuit history.

Review Of Wars For Empire: Apaches, The United States, And The Southwest Borderlands, By Janne Lahti, Thomas A. Britten

History Faculty Publications

The Apache wars of the mid to late nineteenth century continue to be a popular topic in American history, and authors have churned out a broad body of scholarship predominantly focusing on the roles of specific tribes and bands or biographies of participants. Using violence and military culture as an interpretative framework, Janne Lahti offers a new overview of the U.S.–Apache wars that seeks to connect the conflict to recent revisions in borderlands histories. Lahti argues that war and violence “constitute expressions of culture determined by cultural forms and norms”. Wars for Empire, consequently, pays close attention to the …

Homeric Time Travel, Erwin F. Cook Jul 2018

Homeric Time Travel, Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

It has been a commonplace among anthropologists since Malinowski that during the performance of traditional stories the listening community experiences the primordial past when the gods still appeared freely to humans. Significantly, this involves not a return to the past, but a return of the past. The Odyssey not only depicts its own hero as a character from the heroic past, in which the gods were intimately involved with the heroes who fought at Troy, but also as one who brings the past with him when he returns home to an Ithaca that represents a greatly diminished present. In so …

Togetherness With The Past: Literary Pedagogy And The Digital Archive, Madeline B. Gangnes Jul 2018

Togetherness With The Past: Literary Pedagogy And The Digital Archive, Madeline B. Gangnes

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

Archival materials are invaluable to an understanding of the historical, cultural, and material contexts in which literary texts were published. Materiality, paratextual elements, and other key characteristics of literature cannot be discerned from recent editions. Yet original and rare versions of literary texts are difficult or impossible for most scholars, let alone their students, to access. Digital facsimiles provide opportunities to examine archival texts over the Internet, alleviating logistical and financial barriers. In Dust: The Archive and Cultural History (2001), Carolyn Steedman writes: “The Archive is a place in which people can be alone with the past” (81); archives are …

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

The 2017-2018 Editorial Collective is pleased to present the 27th volume of disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory.

Over the past year, we have compiled an exciting collection of interviews, scholarly articles, poetry, and fiction that explore the volume’s central theme: “Archives.” Archives are dynamic constellations of absence and presence, ghosts and ghouls, dust and the digital. As such, discussions of archives stretch into multiple schools of thought and practice, raising questions about power, knowledge, memory, community, and social justice. The works collected here, each one employing its own theoretical and methodological approach to archives, contribute to these important …

To Un-Become: Between Historic Reminder And Hallucination, Geographical Document And Childhood Memory, Collective Tragedy And Personal Healing, Saša Rajšić

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

To Un-Become: Between Historic Reminder and Hallucination, Geographical Document and Childhood Memory, Collective Tragedy and Personal Healing is an multimedia art project, which explores the concept of un-becoming through revisiting Operation Storm in Yugoslavia and its consequences over two decades later. My interest in the concept of un-becoming was sparked by a court case in which General Ante Gotovina, a former Croatian military officer, was found guilty of organizing and implementing a permanent and forcible removal of the Serbian people in a 1995 military action entitled Operation Storm. Not long after, Gotovina’s convictions for crimes against humanity were reversed by …

Subjectivity And Methodology In The Arch‘I’Ve, Elizabeth J. Vincelette Jul 2018

Subjectivity And Methodology In The Arch‘I’Ve, Elizabeth J. Vincelette

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article explores methodologies from the fields of library archival science, human geography, composition and rhetoric, and established editorial practices in English studies. By elaborating on the role of a researcher’s subjectivity in archival creation, this work expands the conversation regarding methodology and archives, especially how archives present us with new ways of seeing and making narratives during the editorial decision-making involved in their creation. Writing about my own experience, I privilege the researcher’s point of view with a narrative about my construction of a digital archive. With archival research, we should promote the revelation of methods and methodology to …

The Meadow And The Archive, Kris Bronstad Jul 2018

The Meadow And The Archive, Kris Bronstad

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

“The Meadow and the Archive” is a short fictional story about a government archives branch operating in a totalitarian empire in which components of the natural world have been eradicated. Archivists observe and assist a woman whom manages to liberate an important element from a particular collection. It is hoped that this element will contain the beginnings of a wilderness that the empire has systematically worked to destroy. The transaction also offers hope for other subversive modes of archival use.

A Thirst For Empire: How Tea Shaped The Modern World, Jane T. Merritt Jul 2018

A Thirst For Empire: How Tea Shaped The Modern World, Jane T. Merritt

History Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) In A Thirst for Empire: How Tea Shaped the Modern World, Erika Rappaport, specialist in British consumer culture, explores the influ- ence of the quintessential English beverage on the rise of mass markets and British identity. Drawing from a variety of research tradi- tions, including recent commodity studies, the author argues that tea was both a product of and a producer of empire. The commercial success of tea created powerful corporate entities with imperial ties, such as the English East India Company and Lipton’s. But, it was the practice of drinking tea that defined and transformed “Britishness.” …
