Thietmar Of Merseburg's Views On Clerical Warfare, Benjamin Joseph Wand Aug 2018

Thietmar Of Merseburg's Views On Clerical Warfare, Benjamin Joseph Wand

Dissertations and Theses

The tenth-century German bishop was more than just a spiritual leader, he was also a territorial lord with secular power. These bishops also lived in an environment where violence was sometimes a way of life. His culture contained a social dynamic that saw violence as a tool for defending and maintaining honor and as a mechanism for dispute resolution. Therefore, some bishops behaved violently, either to defend their diocese from threats or to serve their own political intrigues. In some instances bishops were said to be more skilled in warfare than secular lords. However, while some clergy participated in warfare …

Validation Of Digital Publishing Innovation Adoption Framework, Emmanuel Ifeduba Aug 2018

Validation Of Digital Publishing Innovation Adoption Framework, Emmanuel Ifeduba

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Globally, digital publishing innovations have been shown to be effective in breaking down book production and distribution barriers. However, there has been a dearth of studies on digital publishing innovations (D.P.I.) in Nigeria, particularly as it relates to predictors of innovation adoption. This study, therefore, examined the extent to which perceived contextual factors and perceived relative advantage correlate with the extent of adoption of digital publishing innovations with a view to validating a framework to aid the adoption of digital publishing in developing environments. A framework modifying the diffusion of innovations theory and the Technology, Organisation, Environment theory was designed. …

Storm Clouds On The Horizon: Feminist Ontologies And The Problem Of Gender, Pamela L. Caughie, Emily Datskou, Rebecca Parker Aug 2018

Storm Clouds On The Horizon: Feminist Ontologies And The Problem Of Gender, Pamela L. Caughie, Emily Datskou, Rebecca Parker

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Feminist digital humanities is no longer focused primarily on recovering and preserving works by women authors. Feminist scholars are currently engaged in changing information design and data visualizations. However, as feminists seek to create new ontologies of gender, they face difficulties posed not only by current encoding standards, but by changing concepts of gender. Can ontologies ever capture the complex, multi-layered, dynamic nature of gender identities? This question is especially challenging when dealing with modernist works that represent gender and sexual identities at the very moment of their emergence as such. Our work on a digital edition and archive of …

Sin In Tiantai Buddhism And Christianity: A Comparison Between Chih-I And Pope Gregory I, Wangyu Tang Aug 2018

Sin In Tiantai Buddhism And Christianity: A Comparison Between Chih-I And Pope Gregory I, Wangyu Tang

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Buddhism and Christianity are two of the major religions in the world. This paper is going to compare sin in Medieval Tiantai Buddhism with Medieval Catholicism, with examples of Chih-i (Zhiyi) and Gregory’s teaching on sin. This article investigates sin from the aspects of pride, greed and sources of sin, cardinal sins, and practice of contemplation in the two religions. The two religions share common ground in the question of sin, yet there are differences in the source of sins and the definition of cardinal sins. In addition, the teachings of Chih-i and Gregory the Great on the practice of …

Marital Violence And Fertility In A Relatively Egalitarian High-Fertility Population, Jonathan Stieglitz, Benjamin C. Trumble, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven Aug 2018

Marital Violence And Fertility In A Relatively Egalitarian High-Fertility Population, Jonathan Stieglitz, Benjamin C. Trumble, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven

ESI Publications

Ultimate and proximate explanations of men’s physical intimate partner violence (IPV) against women have been proposed. An ultimate explanation posits that IPV is used to achieve a selfish fitness-relevant outcome, and predicts that IPV is associated with greater marital fertility. Proximate IPV explanations contain either complementary strategic components (for example, men’s desire for partner control), non-strategic components (for example, men’s self-regulatory failure), or both strategic and non-strategic components involving social learning. Consistent with an expectation from an ultimate IPV explanation, we find that IPV predicts greater marital fertility among Tsimané forager-horticulturalists of Bolivia (n = 133 marriages, 105 women). This …

Reading Alice Dunbar-Nelson Through The Eyes Of A Creole, Patrice E. Jones Aug 2018

Reading Alice Dunbar-Nelson Through The Eyes Of A Creole, Patrice E. Jones

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Abstract Over the last fifty years scholars have worked to recover the work of late nineteenth, early twentieth-century writer Alice Dunbar-Nelson. Many scholars have acknowledged the impact of New Orleans culture and history in her writing as well as attempted peel back the layers of her stories in order to understand her commentary on structures of race, class, and gender in nineteenth-century New Orleans. This hybrid paper, both creative and academic, subjective and objective, is a reading of her work through the Creole lens. Reading Alice Dunbar-Nelson through a Creole lens illuminates the radical nature of her work which has …

The Everyday Universe, Ashley W. Hope Aug 2018

The Everyday Universe, Ashley W. Hope

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

I take inspiration from ordinary objects and materials. Through photography, I attempt to transcend the familiar to discover complexity within the bits and pieces of my everyday life. Like other artistic representations, a photograph is a singular portrayal, not an actualization of physical reality. My artistic exploration of this involves incorporating elements of abstraction to point to the truth that all photographs are, by nature, an abstraction of our physical reality based on perspective. The resulting images often share a quality of impermanence, counterbalanced by the act of making a photographic document. By evoking this temporal quality of photography and …

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The following thesis is an exploration in creating TheatreUNO’s production of A Doll’s House and Hedda Gabler. This thesis will include an in-depth look at the process of both productions, analysis, research and production materials. A Doll’s House and Hedda Gabler ran in repertory at The University of New Orleans April 12-28 2018.

Visual Pleasure And Racial Ambiguity, Ruth M. Owens Md Aug 2018

Visual Pleasure And Racial Ambiguity, Ruth M. Owens Md

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

I struggle to present work that reflects a psychological expressivity which at the same time conveys intellectual concepts that are of concern to me. It seems that the fluidity of an image can communicate a certain pathos, and correspond to the fluid nature of one’s identity. Drippy paint, distorted bodies, and vertiginous video clips can give an indication about what a body feels like from within. Depictions of these bodily feelings help to communicate ideas about what it means to be alive in general, and a mixed race woman, in particular.

To Forgive Or Not To Forgive? A Reappraisal Of Vietnam War Evaders And Deserters In President Gerald Ford's Clemency Program, Courtney Carver Aug 2018

To Forgive Or Not To Forgive? A Reappraisal Of Vietnam War Evaders And Deserters In President Gerald Ford's Clemency Program, Courtney Carver

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In 1974, President Ford began the arduous task of healing the wounds sustained by the United States during the Vietnam War. His controversial clemency plan gave those who had either deserted the military or those who evaded the draft the chance to earn their way back into American society. President Ford was willing to face this opposition to move the country closer to resolving an issue that was tearing the nation apart. In the applications to Ford’s Presidential Clemency Board, thousands of deserters and evaders reveal their motivations, and in doing so present a large body of evidence that contradicts …

The Dangerous Twitter-Verse, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 2018

The Dangerous Twitter-Verse, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past few weeks, the tweets of three major league baseball players have made headlines. All three players wrote and sent these tweets when they were in their teens. Josh Hader, a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, was pitching in the All-Star Game when his tweets surfaced on social media. Sean Newcomb, an Atlanta Braves pitcher, was pitching a no-hitter against the Dodgers. It got to the ninth inning with two out and two strikes on the batter. While that drama was playing out on the field, Newcomb’s tweets from his teen years were released across social media. Trea …

Of Rocks And Revolutions, Benjamin M. Roy

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

This post is part of a series featuring behind-the-scenes dispatches from our Pohanka Interns on the front lines of history this summer as interpreters, archivists, and preservationists. See here for the introduction to the series.

It is difficult to explain how the most advanced military technology of the 18th century relies upon a rock to function. Examined with modern eyes, the flintlock musket is as absurd as the macaroni fashion of the era. A petite vise grips a hunk of flint, which when thrown upon a steel battery, showers sparks on a criminally unmeasured amount of black powder. This produces …
