Writing A Moral Code: Algorithms For Ethical Reasoning By Humans And Machines, James F. Mcgrath, Ankur Gupta Aug 2018

Writing A Moral Code: Algorithms For Ethical Reasoning By Humans And Machines, James F. Mcgrath, Ankur Gupta

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The moral and ethical challenges of living in community pertain not only to the intersection of human beings one with another, but also our interactions with our machine creations. This article explores the philosophical and theological framework for reasoning and decision-making through the lens of science fiction, religion, and artificial intelligence (both real and imagined). In comparing the programming of autonomous machines with human ethical deliberation, we discover that both depend on a concrete ordering of priorities derived from a clearly defined value system.

Surveying The Landscape Of Theories And Frameworks Used In The Study Of Sport And Religion: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Zachary T. Smith, Steven N. Waller Ph.D. Aug 2018

Surveying The Landscape Of Theories And Frameworks Used In The Study Of Sport And Religion: An Interdisciplinary Approach, Zachary T. Smith, Steven N. Waller Ph.D.

Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies

Religion and sport is a bourgeoning and maturing interdisciplinary area of study. As the volume of research conducted about topics related to the interface of religion and sport, attention to sound research methods, including the use of relevant theories and theoretical/conceptual frameworks becomes essential. Scholars such as Stausberg and Engler (2014) have posited that the methods used in religious studies (including theory and frameworks) are not as rigorous as those utilized in social science related fields. The imperative then becomes to use theories and frameworks from social science related disciplines such as leisure studies, sports studies and sport psychology to …

When Basketball Was Jewish, Jack Ryan Aug 2018

When Basketball Was Jewish, Jack Ryan

English Faculty Publications

Philosopher-novelist Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, writing in Jewish Jocks: An Unorthodox Hall of Fame, describes Barney "Tiny" Sedran, born Bernard Sedransky on the Lower East Side of New York, as a quintessential Jewish basketball player: "manically energetic, compulsively alert, upending expectations, and compensating for short—really short—comings" (17). Sedransky was the "shortest player ever inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame," she writes, who excelled at a time "when Jews ruled basketball — and lest you think those last three words are a misprint, let me repeat: Jews ruled basketball" (17). Indeed, in the modern era it is easy to forget …

On The Act Of Falling: The Role Of Physical Movement Within Dante’S Inferno, Aomeng Cui Aug 2018

On The Act Of Falling: The Role Of Physical Movement Within Dante’S Inferno, Aomeng Cui

Agora

This paper examines the significance of physical movement in Dante’s Inferno to understand the relationship between internal spirit and external behavior. Dante the Pilgrim’s lengthy journey through Hell is marked by many instances of “falling,” which demonstrate his loss of control over this physical body and reflect his inward spiritual weakening. Dante the Poet illustrates these falls through metaphorical descriptions which distance the individual from a shameful act. Still, Dante relates the movement of “climbing” through a more intimate first- or second- person perspective, which appears to relate the physical difficulty of climbing to mental strength. Through examination of various …

American Creed, William R. Tharp Aug 2018

American Creed, William R. Tharp

Agora

This essay examines the American Founders’ convictions about government as expressed through key documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers, and the Constitution. The goal of this paper is to answer two fundamental questions on behalf of the architects of the American state: Who should rule and what is the main purpose of government? In answering these questions, this analysis also probes into the unique amalgam of both ancient and contemporary political theory that influenced the decisions and opinions of the Founders. Ultimately, this essay highlights their support of a limited republican government run by the …

The Shaping Of Sir Walter Raleigh's Colonial Ideology In The Discovery Of The Large, Rich, And Beautiful Empire Of Guiana, Jeremy Blasiole Aug 2018

The Shaping Of Sir Walter Raleigh's Colonial Ideology In The Discovery Of The Large, Rich, And Beautiful Empire Of Guiana, Jeremy Blasiole

Agora

This essay seeks to elaborate how Sir Walter Raleigh's sense of self serves to construct his colonial ideology as he depicts it in The Discovery of the Large, Rich, and Beautiful Empire of Guiana. This essay considers scholarship which illustrates Raleigh's background as well as overarching Early Modern English conceptions of self as a colonial power. In examining the text through such a lens, the text depicts Raleigh's sense of self as incessant in the colonial ideology he portrays through his literary construction of a Guiana he never truly visited or understood.

Superdiversity In Music Education, Brent C. Talbot Aug 2018

Superdiversity In Music Education, Brent C. Talbot

Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications

Globalization has changed the social, cultural, and linguistic diversity in societies all over the world (Blommaert, J & Rampton, B. Diversities, 13(2), 1–22 (2011)). As new technologies have rapidly developed alongside increased forms of transnational flow, so have new forms of language, art, music, communication, and expression. This rapid and varied blending of cultures, ideas, and modes of communication is what Vertovec (2007) describes as super-diversity—diversity within diversity. In this narrative, I explore the theoretical and methodological pluralism that has aided my research in diverse settings, drawing from post-structuralism, critical theory, sociolinguistics, complexity theory, and discourse analysis—specifically Scollon and Scollon’s …

Creating Herstory: Female Rebellion In Arundhati Roy’S "The God Of Small Things" And "The Ministry Of Utmost Happiness", Priyanka Tewari

Theses and Dissertations

In The God of Small Things and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness novels, the author Arundhati Roy is not only attempting to give feminist weight to the multiplicity of locations in which gender is articulated by recasting her female characters in their quest for selfhood, she is also focusing on women and women-identified characters as agents of history, thereby contributing to an ongoing project of feminist historiography.

The Apostolic Council Of Jerusalem: Taing-Yinn Tharr (တိုင္း၇င္းသား) Apostleship As Anti-Colonial Existence, Lahpai Shawng Htoi Aug 2018

The Apostolic Council Of Jerusalem: Taing-Yinn Tharr (တိုင္း၇င္းသား) Apostleship As Anti-Colonial Existence, Lahpai Shawng Htoi

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

This study of the Jerusalem council in Acts 15 pays special attention to the life of Lucan communities as they attempted to establish co-apostolic existence in the context of first-century Roman imperial expansionism. Taing-Yinn Tharr theory is introduced and deployed to explore the system of domination exercised through apostolic power in the New Testament church and evident in multiple instances of subordination in the Jerusalem deliberation. Taing-Yinn Tharr, developed in Myanmar to accommodate fellow subaltern groups, means “the fellow co-inhabitants of one country of origin” and entails a single united reality that privileges co-existence regardless of multiple, national distinctions …

Epistemology Revisited: A Feminist Critique, Anupam Yadav Aug 2018

Epistemology Revisited: A Feminist Critique, Anupam Yadav

Journal of International Women's Studies

The Platonic legacy of Western epistemology has been severely attacked for its dominant exclusivist and coercive rationality in the discourses of anti-foundationalism and anti-representationalism, which have also given rise to several alternative epistemologies. The feminist discourse challenges the exclusivist and appropriationist logic of Western epistemology, or science, for being highly gender-biased and oppressive. Weininger’s remark that ‘No woman is really interested in science, she may deceive herself and many good men, but bad psychologists, by thinking so’ is one of such silencing masculine diktats that have deeper roots in the sexist, racist and classist biases. The feminists’ revolts against the …

Inequality Analyses Of Gendering Jordanian Citizenship And Legislative Rights, Rania F. Al-Rabadi, Anas N. Al-Rabadi Aug 2018

Inequality Analyses Of Gendering Jordanian Citizenship And Legislative Rights, Rania F. Al-Rabadi, Anas N. Al-Rabadi

Journal of International Women's Studies

Awareness has been recently increased about gender-based rights and citizenship in Jordan. Many of the issues concerning gender equality arise in the private sphere. Therefore, focusing on the politics of family law is important with regards to women’s rights in particular. Family law is the law related to matters such as polygamy, divorce, inheritance, child custody, guardianship and obedience. The effects are observed especially when Jordanian women try to exercise their granted constitutional political rights. It is the family (personal status) law that runs individual affairs within the private sphere in a patriarchal society where it affects also on exercising …

Gender Mainstreaming And Gender Policies In Contemporary Taiwan, Doris T. Chang Aug 2018

Gender Mainstreaming And Gender Policies In Contemporary Taiwan, Doris T. Chang

Journal of International Women's Studies

In 1995, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (hereafter referred to as the Platform for Action) promulgated during the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women called for the use of gender mainstreaming as a strategy in policy formulations for pursuing the goals of gender equality. Feminist leaders of NGOs who joined the Taiwanese government in the mid-1990s were strategically positioned to contribute to policy formulations that would integrate gender-mainstreaming perspectives into policies and institutions in the Taiwanese government. Among the various approaches to gender-mainstreaming, taking positive actions to set pro-women policy agendas have been the predominant approach deployed …

Family-Work Conflict And Performance Of Women-Owned Enterprises: The Role Of Social Capital In Developing Countries--Implications For South Africa And Beyond, Ngek Brownhilder Neneh Aug 2018

Family-Work Conflict And Performance Of Women-Owned Enterprises: The Role Of Social Capital In Developing Countries--Implications For South Africa And Beyond, Ngek Brownhilder Neneh

Journal of International Women's Studies

One critical issue that is highly overlooked in developing regions is the family embeddedness of women entrepreneurs, even though the women in developing countries simultaneously hold several roles in the family and their businesses. As such, this study focused on evaluating the impact of family-work conflict (FWC) on the performance of women-owned businesses in a developing world context. The findings indicate that FWC negatively influenced the performance of women-owned businesses. Additionally, the moderating effect of social capital in this association was examined. The findings suggest that both bonding social capital and bridging social capital buffers the negative effect of FWC …

Using A Model Of Economic Solvency To Understand The Connection Between Economic Factors And Intimate Partner Violence, Heidi Gilroy, Judith Mcfarlane, Nina Fredland, Sandra Cesario, Angeles Nava, John Maddoux Aug 2018

Using A Model Of Economic Solvency To Understand The Connection Between Economic Factors And Intimate Partner Violence, Heidi Gilroy, Judith Mcfarlane, Nina Fredland, Sandra Cesario, Angeles Nava, John Maddoux

Journal of International Women's Studies

Poverty is a risk factor for intimate partner violence (IPV); however, little is known about the economic state at which women are no longer at risk for IPV due to their economic status, which is economic solvency. A Model of Economic Solvency in women has been developed from the literature that includes four factors: human capital, social capital, sustainable employment, and independence. The purpose of this research is to validate the model in a sample of women reporting IPV. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the model using data from 280 abused women. Examination of the model yielded …

How Children Of Lgbq Parents Negotiate Courtesy Stigma Over The Life Course, Rebecca Dibennardo, Abigail Saguy Aug 2018

How Children Of Lgbq Parents Negotiate Courtesy Stigma Over The Life Course, Rebecca Dibennardo, Abigail Saguy

Journal of International Women's Studies

Drawing on in-depth interviews with 28 U.S. adults who have at least one lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer (LGBQ) parent, we examine how this group negotiates the courtesy stigma of a parent’s sexual identity over the life course. Respondents reported less control over revealing courtesy stigma during childhood, when they were closely linked to their parents, but increased ability to conceal parents’ sexual orientation as they aged. During childhood and adolescence, parents’ gender presentation and choice of partner(s) impacted the visibility and degree of courtesy stigma, as did their peer networks and social environments. As adults, respondents continued to face …
