Stemming The Tide Of Death: American Prisoners Of The Japanese At Cabanatuan #1 In The Philippines, 1942, Will Edward Walker

In the spring of 1942, two contingents of American troops surrendered to the Japanese at Bataan and Corregidor in the Philippines. On June 1, the Japanese began concentrating American prisoners at Cabanatuan #1 in Central Luzon. During the first six months, over 2500 prisoners died at the camp from disease and starvation. However, two major turning points occurred that eventually saw the monthly death toll drop to single digits. In August 1942 there was a sixty-six percent drop in the camp’s monthly death toll. In March 1943 there were just nine deaths and the mortality rate remained very low for …

This special cluster consists of twelve short essays, originally presented in two linked roundtables at the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE) conference in Detroit in June 2017, examining Jeffrey Eugenides' 2002 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Middlesex. Through the novel, these papers explore the historical, intersectional, and ecological understandings of Detroit, exposing an exceptional—indeed, epic—range of social ecologies, concerned with everything from intersex and multispecies bio/geopolitics to transnational economies, to the aesthetics of architecture and decay. On September 21, 2018, Dan Abrahamowicz interviewed Donna Schlagheck about her career as Professor of Political Science at Wright State University . Schlagheck discusses her scholarship on terrorism and foreign policy, her leadership in developing the Political Science department and master’s programs, and her decades-long involvement with the university’s nationally recognized Model United Nations team. The interview highlights faculty governance, the Dayton Peace Accords’ local legacy, and Wright State’s institutional growth from 1985 to 2015.

This article examines international migration from a gender perspective. It asserts that migration can be empowering for women, and at the same time it may exacerbate their vulnerabilities, including abuse and trafficking, particularly when migrants are low skilled or irregular.

Though the ACRL Framework was adopted two and a half years ago, music librarians continue to wonder how to integrate the six frames described by this guiding document into our information literacy instruction while also covering the necessities of music information literacy. In this presentation, I will discuss the approach that I used to incorporate the six frames into my instruction for the Music Information Literacy course I teach at Chapman University while still retaining essential music instruction, such as searching for music, navigating particular resources like Grove Music Online, and citation formatting. Journal of Undergraduate Research

The project met several academic objectives. The first was to collect the initial round of data for the Family Foundations of Faith project. Data were collected from over 600 families and were cleaned and prepared for use. With students, three paper proposals were created and accepted to the 2017 National Council on Family Relations conference. These papers will also be submitted to academic journals for publication. Given the extensiveness of the data, they will be mined for years to come, answering critical questions about youth faith development. In sum, the academic objectives of the project have been realized.

The Goose

In our inherited meteorological practices and frameworks, weather conditions are managed for us in a range of ways (for example, through architecture, technology, commodity culture, infrastructure, economic rationale). This field guide brings the weather back to the body. A traditional field guide provides tools for the individual sovereign human subject to observe and document nature “over there”. In contrast, through a range of different activities, our field guide not only invites investigation and cataloguing of the field that we also comprise, but also challenges what counts as a noteworthy observation regarding the weather and also climate.

Conference papers

In this paper we present hr500k, a Croatian reference training corpus of 500 thousand tokens, segmented at document, sentence and word level, and annotated for morphosyntax, lemmas, dependency syntax, named entities, and semantic roles. We present each annotation layer via basic label statistics and describe the final encoding of the resource in CoNLL and TEI formats. We also give a description of the rather turbulent history of the resource and give insights into the topic and genre distribution in the corpus. Finally, we discuss further enrichments of the corpus with additional layers, which are already underway.

于省吾（1896-1984)，中國著名古文字學家、訓詁學家，著作成果頗豐，其古籍《新證》系列，以古文字及出土器物作為考訂及訓釋的材料，被視為開啟山林之作。當中《尚書新證》是《新證》系列中最早出版的著作，可反映于氏訓詁方法的早期面貌。在乾嘉考據學派的訓詁方法和王國維「二重證據法」的影響下，于氏《尚書新證》對《尚書》今文28篇的字詞、句義多有新見，其訓釋的價值實不容忽視。然而，近人研究于氏《新證》系列，卻沒有以《尚書新證》作研究對象，因此，本文試以《尚書新證》為研究對象，並探討其價值。 論文共分三章。第一章交代《尚書新證》的撰作背景、動機，及其版本、體例。第二章會從《尚書新證》内文及于氏發表的論文，歸納並討論于省吾的《尚書》學觀。第三章為《尚書新證》之内容考述及特色，介紹此書有別於其他《尚書》注釋著作之連類訓釋方法，討論此書運用古文字資料為證及紀錄異文的情況，並分別歸納于氏解釋字義、詞義，以至句義之方法，亦會兼及《尚書新證》的内容特色。最後總結全書，討論《尚書新證》對後世學者的影響，並對此書作出評債。

I humbly submit to you today that this is the current problem in our beloved synod, concerning the proper role of the historic liturgy. If we are going to begin to have an accurate understanding of the liturgy, we must carefully stay on the tightrope and avoid falling to one side or the other.
