Proceedings of Armistice & Aftermath: A World War I Symposium

This presentation considers cultural representations of war through analysis of Guy Brown Wiser’s vibrant and colorful Zrsthand chronicle of a particular American Great War aviation experience—that of a pilot shot down and taken prisoner—preserved in 40 watercolor sketches at the National Museum of the United States Air Force (NMUSAF). Brought down in the late summer of 1918, Wiser recorded his captivity with humor and insight, visually juxtaposing Midwest-American and German sensibilities, and contrasting the casual U.S. aviator image against the “stiff German.” The Indiana native’s sketchbook serves as a rare record of WWI prisoner life brought to life by a …

Sullivan, USN (ret) HC ’65, and Marine veteran Harry Kustigian have agreed to share their experiences and insights.

This paper examines the lives and experiences of the men who survived the horrors of the Confederate prisoner of war camp, Libby Prison. Located inside the Confederacy’s capital city, the camp housed captured Union officers from its establishment in 1862 until the fall of Richmond in 1865. Under the command of the Major Thomas Turner and the dreaded Warden Richard Turner, Libby foreshadowed the horrors of concentration camps which would be run by other Germans eighty years later. As part of the denominational ministry plan, Our Journey 2020, the CRCNA has contracted with Calvin College’s Social Research Center to administer a denominational survey every year. The results from the 2018 survey have now been compiled.

All CRC-affiliated adults and older youth are welcome to respond to this survey every year as they are led. In order to ensure a healthy number of responses to the survey every year, however, CRC leaders have randomly assigned every CRC church to one of five “cohorts”. Although a subskills approach to reading instruction is merited in improving the reading skills of struggling readers, struggling readers also benefit from balanced literacy instruction. An overemphasis on reading subskills arguably minimizes students’ enjoyment of reading and motivation to read and may inevitably result in the formation of reluctant or struggling readers. In turn, this may diminish the self-efficacies of reluctant or struggling readers. I designed an embedded multiple case study framed by social cognitive theory to explore the potential influence of literature circles, a balanced literacy instructional strategy, on the reader self-efficacies of reluctant and struggling readers in Grades …

This work explores Arkansas Rosenwald Schools in rural African American communities from 1917-1924. Jim Crow laws governed the lives of black southerners throughout the region. Such laws unjustly marginalized them, their communities, and their schools. In 1868, Arkansas passed Act 52, which mandated segregated and unequal schools for black and white Arkansans. Black Arkansans, both children and adults, lacked educational opportunities, especially those residing in rural areas. African Americans, of all socioeconomic backgrounds, understood the importance of education. Education allowed black Arkansans to reshape their lives and futures. Much of this effort was aided by resources from the Rosenwald Fund. …

Environment, Urbanization, And Public Health: The Bubonic Plague Epidemic Of 1912 In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Ann Zulawski

Latin American and Latino/a Studies: Faculty Publications

In this article I focus on the nexus of urbanization, the environment and public health that was exposed by the 1912 bubonic plague epidemic in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I utilize the concept of “urban health penalty,” developed by demographic historians of the industrial revolution in Europe, to account for the declining health of the working class in cities. While in Europe poor health among the urban poor was associated with industrialization, I argue that in San Juan chaotic, unplanned urbanization reflected the effects of colonialism. I further examine how the epidemic exacerbated the class and racial divisions that contributed …
