Gee’S Bend And The Commodification Of An African-American Tradition, Catherine Williams , '19

Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards

The quilters of Gee’s Bend have experienced an incredible transformation within their community as a result of the outside discovery of their quilts. After multiple interventions during which the quilts were taken out of their original context, the women have risen to fame in the art and quilt worlds. In this thesis, I examine the transformation that both the community and their quilting tradition have undergone as a result of the aforementioned interventions.

The city of Brockton, Massachusetts is composed of a population of 95,623 residents, of whom 11,767 or 12% are Latino, according to the 2016 American Community Survey. The city’s largest population is made up of black residents (39%), and white residents are the second largest ethno-racial group (33%). The share of Latinos (12%) is similar to their statewide population, which is 11% Latino. Brockton has a larger “other” population, which makes up 15% of the city’s population. This group is largely made up of Cape Verdeans. With only 1% of the population, the Asian group will be omitted from the …

The city of Marlborough, Massachusetts has 39,545 residents, of whom 6,902 are Latino, according to the 2012-2016 American Community Survey. While the city is majority non- Latino white (70%), Latinos make up the second largest ethno-racial group (17%), which is higher than the 11% Latino share of the statewide population. Black, Asian, and “other” populations collectively make up 13% of the city’s population. The “other” category includes the 2,902 Brazilians who live in Marlborough.

This share of Latinos is significantly higher than the statewide population, which is only 11% Latino. Black, Asian, and “other” populations collectively make up only 7% of the city’s population.

The city of New Bedford, Massachusetts is home to 94,988 residents, of whom 18,014 are Latino, according to the 2012-2016 American Community Survey. The city is majority non-Latino white (65%), though Latinos make up the second largest ethno-racial group (19%). This share of Latinos is higher than that of the statewide population, which is only 11%. Blacks make up 6% of the city’s population. New Bedford is geographically located in the SouthCoast region, which has a relatively smaller share of Latinos (7%).

The city is majority non-Latino white (77%), though Latinos make up the second largest ethno-racial group (10%). This share of Latinos is slightly lower than the statewide population, which is 11%. Asians, make up 8% of the city’s population. Watertown is geographically located in the metropolitan Boston area, which has a similar 10.8% share of its population Latino.

The city is majority non-Latino white (85%), though Latinos make up the second largest ethno-racial group (12%). This share of Latinos is slightly larger than the statewide population, which is only 11%. The other ethno-racial groups make up approximately 3% of the population. Winthrop is geographically located in Suffolk County that is 22% Latino.

Sometimes cultures, religions, and ethnicities that shared the same space for centuries become fierce rivals, forcing their irreconcilable differences to develop to such an extent that they see war as the only option. The Balkans has had its share of conflicts, destruction, and atrocities leaving scars too deep to heal. The question is: have they seen the end of it, or will the frozen conflict lurking beneath the fragile peace unleash its deadly force again?

"The student-curated exhibition “Boating in the Floating World” focuses on images of boats in ukiyo-e prints as represented in some works from the collection of the RISD Museum. Boats were occasionally depicted in the 18th century celebrity-focused figurative genres. Fairly often they appeared in bijinga – images of beauties, rarely in yakusha-e – portraits of kabuki theater actors, sometimes in compositions derived from literature, history or lore. Nautical motifs became much more pronounced from 1830s with the powerful upsurge of the landscape genre that is believed to have been triggered by the increasingly available Berlin blue – a non-fugitive artificial …

Despite rapid urbanization in Tanzania, agriculture remains central to the nation, the economy, and the livelihoods of a large portion of the population. Smallholder farmers account for the vast majority of agricultural production, yet are an extremely vulnerable population due to poverty, single-sourced income, and climate-dependency for both subsistence and cash-crop agriculture (Rapsomanikis, 2015). This report explores these dynamic rural livelihoods through interviews and portrait photographs in a case study on Mazumbai, Tanga region, Tanzania. Semi-structured interviews explore the people’s modes of economic subsistence, domestic lives, education, challenges, and life stories. Trauma-inducing experiences during conflict can significantly impede the ability to function and effectively learn in the classroom; thus, it is essential to integrate mental health services into the school setting for refugee populations. This study investigated the state of integrated mental healthcare for Syrian refugees in Jordan by surveying Syrian students on their attitudes towards seeking mental health and interviewing educators on their classroom practices. The scope of the study was extremely limited, as data was collected on only 21 students and 5 educators in one school and a number of biases could have skewed the results. It was found …

Abuse Or Be Abused: Traumatic Memory, Sex Inequality, And Millennium As A Socio-Literary Device, Kate Rose

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

This article applies the research of French psychiatrist Muriel Salmona to literary analysis of Stieg Larsson’s protagonist, Lisbeth Salander, in the Millennium trilogy (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 2008; The Girl Who Played with Fire, 2009; The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, 2010). It suggests that Larsson’s novels may be useful in raising awareness of childhood sexual abuse, through reading neglected signs linked to the neurology of traumatic memory. In the tradition of Nordic noir novels, hyperboles in Salander’s sensationalized identity serve to magnify and bring to light a misunderstood social problem. The article …

Rape culture is a relentless cycle that remains very prevalent on college campuses. Rape culture, as best defined in Transforming a Rape Culture, is a culture in which male aggression and violence towards women is essentially purely sexual and normalized (Buchwald). Using Grime as a case study, I employ the analytical framework I created, that is, Musicological Discourse Analysis (MDA) as a holistic mode of analysis to contextualize Grime sociologically and musicologically. This method retheorizes genre, providing a more specific, useful, and detailed musical classification system; the sonic footprint timestamp (SFT). The MDA framework provides a generic mode of musical analysis for research projects in sociology, cultural studies, and the social sciences fields. Opinions on the impacts of China in Africa differ from one observer to the next, be it in media, academic, or elsewhere. While most general discourses have been nuanced and coherent, there is nevertheless a prevailing sentiment of unbridled fear and Sinophobia, or anti-Chinese populism. Based on a two-sided study in Ghana, this research uses Chinese-Ghanaian employment relations as a way of entry to analyze and explore cross-cultural understandings, or lack thereof, that leads to conflict.
