Science And Culture On The Soviet Screen : Russian And Member Republic Biographical Films During The Early Cold War, 1946-1953, Bryan Keith Herman

Between 1947 and 1953, the Soviet Union produced fourteen biographical films about writers, composers, and scientists. These films supported the cultural policies of the zhdanovshchina, a period characterized by Andrei Zhdanov’s policies asserting Russia’s leading role in world science and culture while downplaying Western influence. These biographical films involved some of the top cinematic talent in the Soviet Union, including Nikolai Cherkasov, Aleksandr Dovzhenko, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Grigorii Kozintsev. Although national pride was central to all the biographical films, this dissertation argues that once their historical context is restored, the cultural and scientific biographical films comment on the demonization of …

Maritime Archaic Spearpoints : A New Examination Of Their Context And Chronology, John Michael Garbellano

This research focuses on the morphology, chronology and provenience of nipple-based spearpoints found in Newfoundland and Labrador and their relationship to larger-scale cultural processes during the Archaic period of that Province. Nipple-based points are primarily thought to date between 7500-6000 B.P. and are associated with the early Maritime Archaic tradition, the earliest inhabitants of Newfoundland and Labrador. A recent find of a nipple-based point at the Stock Cove site (CkA1-3) in eastern Newfoundland could mean that part of the island was colonized earlier than previously thought. Language can define people by the way they use it. This thesis investigates how four different languages – American-English, Chinese-Mandarin, South Korean, and Thai – use thanking expressions to one another. The content of this thesis is mainly collected from survey data and movie scripts. This study identifies how American-English, Chinese-Mandarin, South Korean, and Thai use formal and informal thanking expressions in various situations, e.g. people in different social status, and polite endings in thanking expressions. The Davidson Family papers include photographs taken and correspondence written during Ethel Helena Davidson's time as an American Expeditionary Force nurse in France during World War I and Frederick Arthur Davidson's time in the United States Army between the 1920s and 1950s. Also includes a scrapbook of Ethel's war experience and army records for each of them.

Many people believe that religions and science cannot coexist logically because science is evidence-based, whereas religion belief is supported by spiritual, personal, or subjective experiences. This study employed an interview process with pastors and leaders in a small Lutheran denomination to investigate the relationship between social competence and pastoral development. The study data was then evaluated alongside other research regarding what should be taught and how it should be taught to pastoral students. Results indicated that spiritual, intrapersonal, and interpersonal dimensions were related to pastoral competence. Spiritual competence was related to a pastor who lives in the Word of God and is a servant of the Word of God. Intrapersonal competence was associated with pastors who reflect on themselves and develop themselves. Interpersonal competence was …

交通工具是日常生活中不可缺少的事物，除了是人們行走各處的途徑，也是公共空間的一種，其特性在文學作品中也多有表述。這次的創作計劃分三輯共三十首新詩作品，意在用不同角度敘述相關的香港故事，從而反思我們的日常生活，以及當中的歷史、文化論述。

第一輯的詩作回應了一些歷史／社會事件，包括六七暴動、移民潮、保育皇后 碼頭運動等，並用較抽離的視角反思它們對當下社會的影響。第二輯則更注視地方與交通工具的連繫，例如坪州、馬鞍山礦洞等地，除了有回顧歷史及城市變化的地文書寫，也關注當地人們的日常生活。第三輯以宏觀的角度，輔以平日的觀察，思考人與人／人與城市的關係，因而較多哲思及情感抒發，亦思考了汽車等工業產物以外的移動方式。整個創作計劃歷時近一年，希望聚焦在當下的香港故事，用現在的角度審視城市的身世，也並非漁翁撒網式地把所有交通工具都書寫一遍，而專注於主流聲音所忽略的事物。

坂口安吾隨筆對香港九十後身份認同的意義, Sin Ying Cheung

日本作家坂口安吾在太平洋戰爭期間及之後的混亂期，寫下不少向社會提出「墮落」倡議的隨筆作品，涉及身份認同的篇幅不少，在當時的日本社會中佔有獨特的席位。筆者認為，香港九十後面對身份認同困境，閱讀坂口安吾隨筆實有一定的意義。

本文首先解釋香港的身份認同問題，繼而指出香港九十後一代在香港身份認同歷程中的獨特地位。在論述坂口安吾隨筆和身份認同的關係之後，以坂口安吾在太平洋戰爭期間及之後發表的隨筆作品為主，例如〈墮落論〉、〈天皇小論〉及〈日本文化之我見〉等，分析坂口安吾為日本社會書寫的身份認同倡議，例如反思天皇制、放棄傳統等等，並根據香港九十後一代面對的身份認同問題，例如「中華民族」身份對香港人的影響，找出坂口安吾隨筆在身份認同上對香港九十後的意義，最後進一步說明文學與社會的關係。

香港高樓大廈林立，人口稠密，卻擁有大片受保護地區，保護各種動植物及地質遺跡。1976年《郊野公園條例》通過，香港郊野公園的規模自此確立。海岸公園及海岸保護區自1980年末開始發展，現時共有五個海岸公園及一個海岸保護區，保護珍貴的海洋動植物。香港的岩石亦具有重大研究價值，政府設立地質公園，保護有過億年歷史的地質遺跡。米埔自然保護區是雀鳥天堂，上世紀各種漁農業活動促成今天的生態面貌；建立香港濕地公園旨在補償天水圍新市鎮發展所損失的生態環境，園內的人工濕地已成為不少動物的棲息之所。

Physical exile certainly was a painful reality for Xu Xu. Restorative nostalgia might to some extent have informed his literary activity in those years. However, nostalgia in Xu Xu’s postwar fiction, I will argue in this paper, constitutes above all the expression of a quest for a purely aesthetic utopia that had already begun to take shape in his pre-war oeuvre and that came to full fruition in his post-war fiction. Asian American Christians carry within them a triple consciousness by being Asian, American, and Christian. Being Christian specifically means being a pilgrim bound for the Promised Land. The Asian American pilgrim preacher’s message issues from this triple consciousness and from a spirit of postcolonial liberation. Such a preacher’s message is therefore a declaration or assurance of God’s liberative promise of the Promised Land for Asian Americans, the Land already being realized here and now in the foreign land. Child-centered, or childist, interpretation is one of the newest academic approaches to critically reading the Bible. With cues from feminist criticism and other methods, scholars begin by looking for passages that touch on children or contain child characters. Then, rather than focusing upon typical main characters, scholars draw the reader’s foremost attention to the child, reading the actions and words of other characters, narrator, even the author in relation to the child. Sometimes we use this approach to learn more about children historically, and peoples’ views of them. We may also use this approach along with literary methods to understand …
