What Are The Benefits Of Education Abroad? What Do We Convey To Ud Students About This?, Karen Mcbride
What Are The Benefits Of Education Abroad? What Do We Convey To Ud Students About This?, Karen Mcbride
Proceedings: 2018 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
Some of the benefits student get by studying abroad include:
- Employability
- Working within a diverse climate
- Experience of the “other” (important given our racial demographics in EA)
- Thinking/Acting creatively in a fluctuating environment
- Foreign language skills
- Intercultural development
UD’s SAIL Program (Semester Abroad and Intercultural Leadership) is a specific example of how we are being more intentional about intercultural development and positive intercultural engagement within the UD community.
Why Globalization Matters, J W. Terry
Why Globalization Matters, J W. Terry
Proceedings: 2018 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
Globalization is a choice; inclusivity is also a choice. When you have privilege or power, you can choose what you like and what you don’t like. People tend to associate with what they value. That is fine; however, the problem exists in the question of “why do we value what we value?” I would argue that your values have been shaped by the media, false or incomplete historical narratives, and of course your upbringing. Therefore, your values have been skewed by factors like racism, white supremacy, simple stereotypes.

Introduction Of The Keynote Speaker: Imbolo Mbue, Amy E. Anderson
Proceedings: 2018 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
Imbolo Mbue is the author of Behold The Dreamers, a 2017 Oprah’s Book Club pick and winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award.
Mbue’s book is informed by her experience of being an immigrant and the experiences of the many immigrants that she knows. The journeys of our students and Ms. Mbue connect in Limbe: each summer a group of UD students travels to Cameroon for a cultural-immersion/study-abroad program.
Mbue’s work is particularly relevant as we have a national conversation about immigration. Behold the Dreamers explores the complexity and interrelationship of these journeys and their connection to systems that privilege, oppress, or …

Introductory Remarks: Global Voices On Campus, Julius A. Amin
Proceedings: 2018 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus Symposium emerged in an atmosphere of optimism. During the last decade, UD’s profile as an international campus increased in several ways. With roughly 10 percent of its students identifying as international, the University restructured its curriculum to include more programming and course offerings that are global in nature and scholarly scope. There was an uptick in study abroad and cultural immersion programs. Simultaneously, UD’s efforts to recruit more domestic minority students, especially African American, Hispanic, and Native American students, is on the right trajectory. It is moving upwards. Last year, 16 percent …
Concluding Remarks And Looking Ahead, Julius A. Amin
Concluding Remarks And Looking Ahead, Julius A. Amin
Proceedings: 2018 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
It is a truism that we live in a global village. Technology, communication, and the movement of people and ideas have blurred national and continental boundaries. Presentations from students, staff, faculty, and the administration at the Global Voices Symposium illustrated that concept. Themes of community, identity, human understanding, and hospitality were dominant.

Create Connections; Address Frustrations; Exercise Compassion, Susan Wawrose
Proceedings: 2018 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
The story of international education cannot be fully told without mentioning the frustrations felt by everyone involved. I believe one of the reasons for this conference is that we also need to talk about the many challenges of making international education work well.
So, how do we proceed? What are the next steps? ... I believe the way ahead involves clear-eyed and ongoing attention to the well-being—at all levels—of all the stakeholders.

Escaping Into The Creative Imagination: A Case Study Of James J. Guthrie And The Pear Tree Press, Hayley Harlow
Escaping Into The Creative Imagination: A Case Study Of James J. Guthrie And The Pear Tree Press, Hayley Harlow
Special Collections Research Center Learning Lab Student Research
This paper focuses upon the collection of works by Scottish printmaker James J. Guthrie (1874-1952) housed in the University of Kentucky Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The collection includes numerous prints, drawings, and book plates from the Pear Tree Press, the private press Guthrie operated in England from 1899 until his death. My research will in part analyze the influence of the Romantic period in Guthrie’s work, particularly that of William Blake, as well as the connection between Guthrie’s own creative autonomy and the Romantic movement’s notion of poetic genius. It will examine this revival of Romantic poetry in …

The Problem With Wesley’S Postmillennialism: An Exegetical Case For Historic Premillennialism In 21st Century Wesleyan Theology And Missions, Timothy J. Christian
The Problem With Wesley’S Postmillennialism: An Exegetical Case For Historic Premillennialism In 21st Century Wesleyan Theology And Missions, Timothy J. Christian
The Asbury Journal
This article presents an exegesis of Revelation 20:1-10 followed by a critical assessment of Wesley’s interpretation of Revelation 20:1-10. Overall, Wesley’s postmillennial interpretation of Revelation 20:1-10 is not supported by an exegetical reading of Revelation 20:1-10 (Scripture); it is not rooted in the early church (tradition); and it is based largely upon the optimism of the 18th century which was shattered by the 20th century (experience). Historic premillennialism, however, does exegetical justice to Revelation 20:1-10 (Scripture), takes seriously the early church’s view (tradition), and accords with our reason and experience in the 21st century (reason and experience). As such, Wesleyans …
Methodism In An Orthodox Context: History, Theology, And (Sadly) Politics, Mark R. Elliott
Methodism In An Orthodox Context: History, Theology, And (Sadly) Politics, Mark R. Elliott
The Asbury Journal
The history of Methodism and Eastern Orthodoxy goes back to the early days of Wesley and his interest in the teachings of the Greek Church Fathers. The relationship between Methodists and the Orthodox Church has gone through positive and negative periods, but the growth of the Soviet Union and the challenge of Communism placed new challenges on both groups. The emergence of the Russian Orthodox Church and its reaction to growing Protestant missions has led to new problems, although the ongoing hope is that commonalities in our theology will overcome some of the challenges of current political realities. This paper …

On The Moding And Diachrony Of The Books Of Samuel, David B. Schreiner
On The Moding And Diachrony Of The Books Of Samuel, David B. Schreiner
The Asbury Journal
The three “lamp” passages in Samuel (1 Sam 3:3; 2 Sam 21:17; 22:29) cooperate to establish an inclusio that serves as the hermeneutical lens for the final form of Samuel. Contrary to Graeme Auld, therefore, 1 and 2 Samuel is not necessarily all about David, but rather it’s about David insofar as he is the chief vehicle through which the narrative communicates a particular ideology. To account for this dynamic, there appears to be at least two phases of development within Samuel’s lamp metaphor, the latter of which imported a more critical posture toward the monarchal institution. Moreover, the latter …
The Nature Of The Church's Mission In Light Of The Biblical Origin Of Social Holiness, Ban Seok Cho
The Nature Of The Church's Mission In Light Of The Biblical Origin Of Social Holiness, Ban Seok Cho
The Asbury Journal
This paper intends to find missiological implications that the biblical origin of social holiness has for the church’s mission. In order to accomplish this purpose, this paper, first, identifies the biblical origin of social holiness in the Old Testament narrative and its development in the New Testament narrative. Then, the relationship between the image of God in Genesis 1 and the development of social holiness in the biblical narrative will be discussed. Lastly, in light of the biblical origin of social holiness, missiological implications for the church’s mission are suggested. The thesis of this paper is that social holiness- as …
