There is an ancient mystical tradition that each character in the Hebrew alphabet also has a meaningful numerical equivalent. This tradition is called Gematria. It stands to reason that if a letter can be translated into a number, then that number can be given a chromatic value as well. By mapping each character’s position in the Hebrew alphabet to correspond with a color on the visible spectrum, we can translate these chromatic values from the text. We can translate the text into light.

Examining The Effect Of Aural Preparation On Second Grade Students’ Music Literacy Rhythm Skills, Craig Hurley, Dorothy Musselwhite, Brian C. Wesolowski
Examining The Effect Of Aural Preparation On Second Grade Students’ Music Literacy Rhythm Skills, Craig Hurley, Dorothy Musselwhite, Brian C. Wesolowski
Research & Issues in Music Education
Aural preparation is operationally defined as hearing, performing, decoding, and creating rhythms or pitches aurally prior to the introduction of music notation. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of aural preparation on second grade students’ music literacy rhythm skills (i.e. reading, performing, and dictation). The research questions that guided this study included: (1) What are the psychometric qualities (i.e., validity and reliability) of the three measures used in this study used to assess rhythmic potential and achievement? (2) How does aural preparation affect students' ability to read and perform rhythms? (3) How does aural preparation affect …
Student Perspectives And Learning Outcomes From Self-Guided Ensemble Rehearsal, David M. Hedgecoth
Student Perspectives And Learning Outcomes From Self-Guided Ensemble Rehearsal, David M. Hedgecoth
Research & Issues in Music Education
The purpose of this study was to examine democratic practice in a large ensemble setting. A large (N = 63) auditioned concert band served as the case study for the present investigation. A series of self-guided rehearsals provided the opportunity for the ensemble members to engage in democratic musical governance without a conductor. Mixed-method methodologies were utilized to gain deep insight into interpersonal and musical events that took place during the group’s rehearsals. Several findings provide new insight into how democratic practices function in large ensembles, and how these practices impact music education instruction. Specifically, I analyzed the impact …

Research & Issues in Music Education
Welcome to the 2018 issue of Research and Issues in Music Education (RIME). In this issue, Christina Smiraglia and Hanako Sawada Lacerda of Harvard University along with Gordon Divine Asaah of the University of Pennsylvania report on the Art of Listening in a middle school visual art program in Edinburgh, Scotland; Wesley Brewer of Oregon State University analyzes and describes the contents of recommended band repertoire lists; Craig Hurley, Dorothy Musselwhite, and Brian C. Wesolowski of the University of Georgia examine the effect of aural preparation with second-grade music students; and David Hedgecoth investigates democratic practice in a large ensemble …

The Art Of Listening: Listening Skill Development, Classical Music Appreciation, And Personal Response Through Visual Art In A Middle School Program, Christina Smiraglia, Gordon Divine Asaah, Hanako Sawada Lacerda
Research & Issues in Music Education
Although many programs aim to develop students’ listening skills and promote the appreciation of Western classical music, relatively few such programs incorporate visual art. This study examined the perceived effectiveness of the Edinburgh International Festival’s (EIF) Art of Listening program in reaching its stated goals to: develop skills for listening, encourage the enjoyment of listening to Western classical music, break down preconceptions held about Western classical music, cultivate a deeper relationship with the imagination through music and art, and encourage students’ personal responses to music. Focusing primarily on the first three goals, this study gathered data from 78 students from …
A Content Analysis Of Recommended Composers In Repertoire Lists For Band, Wesley Brewer
A Content Analysis Of Recommended Composers In Repertoire Lists For Band, Wesley Brewer
Research & Issues in Music Education
In this study I analyze and describe the contents of recommended band repertoire lists to explore which composers’ music is recommended and arranged for band most often. Fourteen repertoire lists provided by state-level music associations and independent publishers were included in the analysis, comprising a total of 32,267 entries. Previous research on band repertoire and programming has tended to focus on composers of advanced literature and has subsequently overlooked the contributions of composers who write music primarily intended for educational purposes. The 25 most recommended composers from each graded difficulty level of literature from 1 to 5+ and overall are …

Sabbatical As Sacred Time: Contemplative Practice And Meaning In The Neoliberal Academy, Leeray M. Costa
Sabbatical As Sacred Time: Contemplative Practice And Meaning In The Neoliberal Academy, Leeray M. Costa
Gender & Women’s Studies Faculty Scholarship
What if we considered the sabbatical as a sacred time for renewal and wholeness? How might this understanding of sabbatical change the way we see ourselves as teachers, scholars, and human beings? How might it shape the way we approach our teaching and scholarship in more creative, holistic, and meaningful ways? And what implications might the idea of sabbatical as sacred time and as contemplative practice have for how we as faculty negotiate the challenges of the contemporary neoliberal academy? These are some of the questions I explore in this essay.

Journal of Response to Writing
We are pleased to share with you our latest issue of the Journal of Response to Writing. Although not intentionally planned, this issue’s three feature articles all explore the affective dimensions of response, considering both learners’ and instructors’ views on aspects of response practice. The authors point out that just as important as examining what happens when responding is knowing how the people involved experience response. We are pleased to welcome back JRW’s founding editor, Dana Ferris, whose article “‘They Say I Have a Lot to Learn’: How Teacher Feedback Influences Advanced University Students’ Views of Writing” presents the findings …

“They Said I Have A Lot To Learn”: How Teacher Feedback Influences Advanced University Students’ Views Of Writing, Dana Ferris
Journal of Response to Writing
This study examines the relationship between students’ memories of teacher feedback and these students’ writing and attitudes toward and enjoyment of writing. More than 8,500 survey responses were collected from advanced undergraduate students in a large university writing program. A question about the characteristics of teacher feedback received by student respondents was examined both quantitatively and qualitatively. Second, responses to a different survey question about students’ attitudes toward writing were statistically compared with their reported memories of teacher feedback. Responses to the teacher feedback and writing attitudes questions from different student subgroups (analyzed by first language backgrounds and by when …
Student Perceptions Of Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback In Developmental Multilingual Writing Classes, Kendon Kurzer
Student Perceptions Of Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback In Developmental Multilingual Writing Classes, Kendon Kurzer
Journal of Response to Writing
In this project, I investigated student perceptions of dynamic written corrective feedback (DWCF), a specific method of providing accuracy feedback, in developmental writing classes for multilingual students. Via a quasi-experimental design using treatment and control sections of a developmental writing program’s three levels, I collected and contrasted survey data from a total of 145 students. I then interviewed three students (one international and two generation 1.5) representing a range of perceptions of DWCF. Participants generally appreciated and valued DWCF, especially as a complement to a grammar textbook, and students of classes that used DWCF reported higher scores on most survey …
Online Peer Review Using Turnitin Peermark, Mimi Li
Online Peer Review Using Turnitin Peermark, Mimi Li
Journal of Response to Writing
Online peer review has been increasingly implemented in composition and second language classes. This article reports on a pedagogical practice in which students used the Turnitin PeerMark tool to conduct peer response in a first-year writing class. In this study, students drew on multiple PeerMark functions (i.e., commenting tools, composition marks, and PeerMark questions) and provided feedback on their peers’ summary and response papers. In addition to students’ positive attitude toward the use of PeerMark revealed in the interviews, analyses of archived PeerMark records suggest that students provided constructive feedback in multiple aspects and that the majority of peer comments …
De-Extinction And The Conception Of Species, Leonard Finkelman
De-Extinction And The Conception Of Species, Leonard Finkelman
Faculty Publications
Developments in genetic engineering may soon allow biologists to clone organisms from extinct species. The process, dubbed “de-extinction,” has been publicized as a means to bring extinct species back to life. For theorists and philosophers of biology, the process also suggests a thought experiment for the ongoing “species problem”: given a species concept, would a clone be classified in the extinct species? Previous analyses have answered this question in the context of specific de-extinction technologies or particular species concepts. The thought experiment is given more comprehensive treatment here. Given the products of three de-extinction technologies, twenty-two species concepts are “tested” …

Pattern Research Project
2018 Pattern Research Project
Audrey Paiva – Cusp
The Pattern Research Project involves research and analysis of contemporary patterns found in the textiles and wallcoverings of the built interior environment. Patterns use motif, repetition, color, geometry, craft, technology, and space to communicate place, time, and concept. Through this research and analysis, built environments - their designers, occupants, construction, and context - can be better understood.
Audrey Paiva, VCU Interior Design BFA 2021, selected the Cusp pattern for the 2018 Pattern Research Project. The text below is excerpted from the student’s work:
“The main shapes used in Athos Bulcao’s work are …
