Manuscript Collection Finding Aids

Finding aid, scan and typescript (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3300. Letter, 2 January 1862, to John Dennis and his parents, Richland County, Ohio from John’s brother. In camp near Bardstown, Kentucky with the 64th Regiment, Company B, Ohio Volunteers, he praises Kentucky’s farms, crops and springs, and refers to two men of his acquaintance: William Clark, who is serving with the Confederate Army, and Charles Clark, who he met in Louisville, Kentucky and who boasted of his regiment’s superior skills and African American servants. The envelope bears a pro-Union image.

Written on mourning stationery, the letter offers condolences on the death of Lily’s daughter Ellen on 17 August 1881. This article examines translocality and crossmediality as new developments in cinema and visual studies. Isaac Julien's 9-screen video installation Ten Thousand Waves (2010) represents a migratory aesthetics based on translocal evocation, crossmedial interaction, and mobile spectatorship. As Julien reconstructs the legend of Mazu and memories of Shanghai in radically different modes (e. g., the idyllic versus the phantasmagoric, the nostalgic versus the post-nostalgic), their screen images and sounds enter a constant circulation and produce intriguing multi-directional, multi-spatial, and multi-temporal dissonance/resonances across different media and genres — cinema, art photography, video installation, police rescue footage, calligraphy, poetry, painting, and star performance. …

This article is about the practice of dividing historical and literary-historical time into units of 100 years, with a particular focus on the semantics of the French term "siècle". It examines how in the course of what we now call the seventeenth century the term "siècle" shifted in meaning from "age" or "epoch" to the round number 100. It contextualizes the shift with reference to the great Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns, while also reflecting on the implications and consequences of a counterfactual alternative to modern historical chronology.

By perusing the text of "Yuan Dao" (tracing the origin to the Dao) with relevant theories of Chinese and Western philosophy, this article reviews different interpretations of "Dao" and their insufficiencies. It reinterprets the meanings of "Dao" and analyzes difference and connection between "Dao" in "Yuan Dao" and that in Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Another focus of this article is the reasons why Liu Xie esteems Confucius as a saint and Laozi a sage, and why he extols Confucian classics and Dao De Jing. Through the above analysis, the article expounds the meanings and relationship among "dao-de-sheng-wen" in "Yuan Dao".

A relatively independent type of ancient Chinese prose, jiazhuan was biographies written anthropomorphically for objects. Han Yu's Biography of Mao Ying written in the Tang dynasty marked the beginning of jiazhuan, followed by numerous parodies in the Song and Ming dynasties. Such prose, written by the literati at leisure for entertainment, embodied their refined aesthetic taste. This article argues that jiazhuan was an expression in the form of games, which displayed writers' talent. In his review, Fang Hui adopted the Jian'an Style and Jian'an Flavor as the criteria. Influenced by Johann Gottfried Herder and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the German "Sturm und Drang" movement regarded William Shakespeare as a model of gifted drama poets. Viewing Shakespeare as a "genius" in imagination for the possible "world history", Herder applied pantheistic philosophy to his drama theory and developed a concept of radical enlightenment. Comparing Herder's view with Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's interpretation of Shakespeare as well as his Aristotelian enlightenment dramatic idea, a great difference can be revealed: Lessing aimed to cultivate civic morality, while Herder intended to evoke the Volk's passion towards freedom and political action.

Based on the classic vocabulary of music fu's creative mode in the Han dynasty, Ji Kang's "Qin Fu" integrated the parallel prose and the argumentation into the work of the fu. Ji Kang gave yaqin metaphysical description, thus bringing the qin culture a richer content. He proposed a qin ethics of "peace virtue", which was an innovation based on the music theory tradition of the pre-Qin and Han dynasties. This paper mainly discusses Guattari's a-signifying semiotics. He opposes Lacan's Structuralist psychoanalysis as well as the tyranny and hegemony of the signifier. By borrowing Hjelmslev's glossematics and Pierce's semiotics, he builds modes of semiotization, and develops the a-signifying semiotics, which offers a new perspective and dimension for the theory of subjectivity and the psychoanalytic criticism, and further forms a schizoanalytic criticism based on the a-signifying semiotics.
