Sí, Me Afectó: The Women Of Bracero Families In Michoacán, 1942-1964, Eleanor Inez Lindberg Jan 2018

Sí, Me Afectó: The Women Of Bracero Families In Michoacán, 1942-1964, Eleanor Inez Lindberg

Honors Papers

Between 1942 and 1964, the U.S. and Mexico made a series of labor agreements collectively referred to as the Bracero Program. The Mexican men, Braceros, contracted through this program worked temporarily in agriculture and industry across the U.S. This paper examines the lives of ten women in the Mexican state of Michoacan whose male family members worked as Braceros. The mens' absences disrupted the family in an economic sense, requiring women to take on labor that was non-traditional for women at the time, as well as in a social sense, as the stability and respectability of their household came into …

Collecting Native America: John Lloyd Stephens And The Rhetoric Of Archaeological Value, Christen Mucher Jan 2018

Collecting Native America: John Lloyd Stephens And The Rhetoric Of Archaeological Value, Christen Mucher

American Studies: Faculty Publications

This article focuses on the representations of Maya statues made by archaeologist–explorer John Lloyd Stephens and his artistic collaborator Frederick Catherwood in the 1840s. While Stephens’s and Catherwood’s trips to Central America, Mexico, and the Yucatán were meant to provide material objects for a Pan-American museum of Native American “antiquities,” the statues themselves were never exhibited to the public. Nonetheless, the visual and literary representations of the Maya “idols” circulating across North and Central America as well as Europe incited international interest and dramatically increased similar statues’ monetary value. Stephens’s valuation of Indigenous objects as possessable historical relics rested on …

Peer Reviews And Graduate Writers: Engagements With Language And Disciplinary Differences While Responding To Writing, Kate Mangelsdorf, Todd Ruecker Jan 2018

Peer Reviews And Graduate Writers: Engagements With Language And Disciplinary Differences While Responding To Writing, Kate Mangelsdorf, Todd Ruecker

Journal of Response to Writing

Although peer review as a method of writing response has been examined extensively, only limited research exists on peer review at the graduate level. This study examines graduate students’ peer review interactions in a writing workshop in which first- and second-language students from different disciplines were enrolled. The researchers focused on how students engaged with language and disciplinary differences as they peer-reviewed. Data were collected from two separate writing workshop classes over two semesters and included video recordings, observation notes, writing samples, and end-of-semester surveys. The researchers found that some students could provide only limited assistance when working with peers …

The Genre Of Teacher Comments From Hard Copy To Ipad, Jennifer Grouling Jan 2018

The Genre Of Teacher Comments From Hard Copy To Ipad, Jennifer Grouling

Journal of Response to Writing

Although scholars have advocated for new technologies for responding to student work, there has been little study of how commenting style varies across types of technologies. Using a combination of artifact analysis and interviews, this study shows how the comments of five writing instructors varied between hard-copy and iPad-collected papers. Comments were coded for focus and mode based on previous work by Straub and Lunsford (1995). The overall focus, mode, and length of comments remained consistent across types of technology. In addition, the genre of the end comment (Smith, 1997) remained consistent and appeared unaffected by technology use. However, participants …

Historical Study In The U.S.: Assessing The Impact Of Tuning Within A Professional Disciplinary Society, Daniel J. Mcinerney Jan 2018

Historical Study In The U.S.: Assessing The Impact Of Tuning Within A Professional Disciplinary Society, Daniel J. Mcinerney

History Faculty Publications

The U.S.-based American Historical Association (AHA), the largest – and most influential – professional organization for historians, was the first disciplinary society in the world to lead a Tuning project, launching its work in 2012. This essay analyzes a survey distributed to historians on campuses that have taken part in the AHA Tuning project. The purpose is to understand, after six years of work on the project, what practical difference Tuning has made for historians, students, courses, curricula, and departments. Survey data indicate that, under the disciplinary society’s guidance and encouragement, historians have created meaningful learning outcomes, implemented the objectives …

Residential Proximity To Electronic Dance Music Nightclubs And Associations With Substance Use, Sexual Behaviors, And Related Problems, Mance E. Buttram, Maria E. Pagano, Steven P. Kurtz Jan 2018

Residential Proximity To Electronic Dance Music Nightclubs And Associations With Substance Use, Sexual Behaviors, And Related Problems, Mance E. Buttram, Maria E. Pagano, Steven P. Kurtz

CAHSS Faculty Articles

This study examines the association between proximity of place of residence to preferred nightclub and substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and related problems, among a sample of 498 young adult substance users in Miami who report regular nightclub participation. Hierarchal linear models and logistic regressions were constructed to examine the impact of residential proximity to preferred nightclub on risk behaviors. Compared with participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub, participants residing further away reported higher intensities of alcohol and cocaine use (p < .01), greater condomless vaginal sex frequencies (p < .001), and more substance dependence symptoms (p < .05). Conversely, participants residing in closer proximity to their preferred nightclub had higher likelihood of arrest history (p < .05) than participants residing further away. Results suggest that participants residing further from their preferred nightclubs may be more invested in the nightclub outing and, therefore, engage in more risk behaviors.

The Animalistic Brown Penis And The Meek White Penis In “The English Patient” And “Fun Home”, Tarun Malik Jan 2018

The Animalistic Brown Penis And The Meek White Penis In “The English Patient” And “Fun Home”, Tarun Malik

Student Works

"The English Patient" and "Fun Home" are both texts that involve the topic of sex and male sexuality. However, these topics are handled very differently when it comes to race. "The English Patient" treats a harmless brown man as a threat whereas "Fun Home" portrays an abusive white man as safe. This paper examines the differences in treatment and reflects on what this says about the view of men-of-color as sexual threats in the culture at large.
