Crossing The Digital Divide: Monism, Dualism And The Reason Collective Action Is Critical For Cyber Theory Production, Christopher Whyte Jan 2018

Crossing The Digital Divide: Monism, Dualism And The Reason Collective Action Is Critical For Cyber Theory Production, Christopher Whyte

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

In studying topics in cyber conflict and cyber-security governance, scholars must ask—arguably more so than has been the case with any other emergent research agenda—where the epistemological and ontological value of different methods lies. This article describes the unique, dual methodological challenges inherent in the multifaceted program on global cyber-security and asks how problematic they are for scholarly efforts to construct knowledge about digital dynamics in world affairs. I argue that any answer to this question will vary depending on how one perceives the social science enterprise. While traditional dualistic perspectives on social science imply unique challenges for researcher, a …

Selected Works Temporary Series

The Gila River and Wilderness are the heart and soul of A Song for the River. Every summer since 2002, Connors has been perched in a tower 50 feet above the Gila Wilderness, watching for fire. His first book, Fire Season (30,000 sold), recounted the deep lessons learned about mountains, wilderness, fire, and solitude. A Song for the River, its sequel, updates and deepens the story: the mountain he loves goes up in flames; a lookout on another mountain whom he has come to love as brother dies in a freak accident; and three high school students he admires die …

Second Language Teachers’ Written Response Practices: An In-House Inquiry And Response, Joseph J. Lee, Farzaneh Vahabi Jan 2018

Second Language Teachers’ Written Response Practices: An In-House Inquiry And Response, Joseph J. Lee, Farzaneh Vahabi

Journal of Response to Writing

This in-house inquiry explores the response practices of a group of L2 writing teachers in our specific program to gain a better understanding of these teachers’ feedback practices and to bring about purposeful change within our local context. Data consist of 4,313 electronic feedback (e-feedback) items given by six writing teachers to 36 L2 students on six writing tasks in a first-year writing course for international students. Using Ene and Upton’s (2014) e-feedback framework, each feedback instance was coded for feedback target, directness, explicitness, charge, and location. Although some variations exist, results show that these teachers overwhelmingly focused on form …

A Conversational Approach: Using Writing Center Pedagogy In Commenting For Transfer In The Classroom, Elizabeth Busekrus Jan 2018

A Conversational Approach: Using Writing Center Pedagogy In Commenting For Transfer In The Classroom, Elizabeth Busekrus

Journal of Response to Writing

While some studies suggest that teachers’ written comments help students transfer writing skills across contexts (Wardle, 2007), the literature on feedback’s role in the transfer process has yet to be fully explored. Research has indicated that feedback that is intentional, specific, and reflective benefits students’ writing growth and the transfer process. To rethink this process of providing feedback, this article discusses how writing center principles can be applied to commenting for transfer in first-year composition and writing-intensive courses. Writing centers offer an individualized, student-centered, conversational approach to learning. Universities have incorporated the writing center into the classroom through writing fellows …

A Discourse Analysis Of Gender Perceptions, Twitter, The 2018 Progressive Convervative Leadership Race, And The 2018 Provincial Election, Mary E. Chamberlain

Social Justice and Community Engagement

The research seeks to bring awareness to how online discourse on Twitter can contribute to the reinforcement of unequal power relations against female electoral candidates. This project is a discourse analysis of gender perceptions of the 2018 Progressive Conservative Leadership Race and the 2018 provincial election as portrayed on Twitter. Using understandings of Liberal Feminism and Intersectionality, this project demonstrates the struggle of gender discrimination against women in political life and attempts to recognize the efforts of women attempting to shatter the glass ceiling. The findings suggest female candidates experienced Twitter as a gendered and bullying platform, while male candidates …

Adapt At Semeval-2018 Task 9: Skip-Gram Word Embeddings For Unsupervised Hypernym Discovery In Specialised Corpora, Alfredo Maldonado, Filip Klubicka

Other resources

This paper describes a simple but competitive unsupervised system for hypernym discovery. The system uses skip-gram word embeddings with negative sampling, trained on specialised corpora. Candidate hypernyms for an input word are predicted based on cosine similar- ity scores. Two sets of word embedding mod- els were trained separately on two specialised corpora: a medical corpus and a music indus- try corpus. Our system scored highest in the medical domain among the competing unsu- pervised systems but performed poorly on the music industry domain. Our approach does not depend on any external data other than raw specialised corpora.

El Abrazo De La Serpiente O La Re-Escritura Del Amazonas Dentro De Una Ética Ecológica Y Poscolonial, Ana María Mutis Jan 2018

El Abrazo De La Serpiente O La Re-Escritura Del Amazonas Dentro De Una Ética Ecológica Y Poscolonial, Ana María Mutis

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

At first glance the Colombian film El Abrazo de la Serpiente (2015) is about the encounter of two cultures with two divergent visions of the world: the indigenous people of the Amazon and the foreign scientists who explored the region during the first half of the twentieth century. This study proposes that Ciro Guerra’s film is also a commentary on how to write about the Amazon. This is supported by the metafictional strategies deployed by the film which, based on the revision and refiguration of the scientific texts that inspired it, simulates the construction of a document that adheres to …

What Does It Mean To Be A Christian Woman? Sustaining And Empowering The Female Christian Faith In Light Of Sexism In Christian Communities, Erin Pauline Rooney Jan 2018

What Does It Mean To Be A Christian Woman? Sustaining And Empowering The Female Christian Faith In Light Of Sexism In Christian Communities, Erin Pauline Rooney

Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects

What helps young Christian women sustain their faith in the face of sexism within Christian communities? Are there practices or traditions that leaders of these Christian communities need to consider to better support young Christian women? Do young Christian women find value in studying theology, history, and hermeneutics from female perspectives, and if so, why? These are the guiding questions this project seeks to answer. This project involves a qualitative research study with a group of students within a “Women in Christianity” course at Seattle Pacific University. Participants were interviewed twice during the course and also forwarded their written reflections …

Postcolonial Discipleship: Movement, Genius, And Uncertainty: Explorations In Contemporary 'Korean American' Theological Discourse, Michael Sungjoon Won Jan 2018

Postcolonial Discipleship: Movement, Genius, And Uncertainty: Explorations In Contemporary 'Korean American' Theological Discourse, Michael Sungjoon Won

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

Contemporary ‘Korean American’ theological discourse seeks to more broadly account for the variations and deviations that characterize the ‘Korean American’ experience. Theologians Andrew Sung Park and Grace Ji-Sun Kim theorize the ‘Korean American’ subject through notions of ‘authenticity’ and cultural ‘rootedness’. Such an approach presents itself to be problematic when one begins to account for the ways that colonialism and imperialism have shaped understandings of culture, ultimately revealing that culture is not simply an expression of ontology, but is also driven by a large array of sociological factors. In light of this, theologians Wonhee Anne Joh and Sang Hyun Lee …

In Defense Of The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit In The Believer: A Presbyterian Perspective, Geoffrey K. Wanyoike

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

This thesis offers a defense of Baptism in the Holy Spirit in the believer. It narrows to a Presbyterian perspective on what we understand the Baptism in the Holy Spirit to be. In addition, it offers a scholarly foundation and defense, showing the reality of the experience from the Scriptures and different theologians.

The Power Of Story: Toward Dismantling Racism, May Tag Yang Jan 2018

The Power Of Story: Toward Dismantling Racism, May Tag Yang

Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects

The traditional narrative of America is one that upholds Whiteness and reinforces a society built on a system of advantages based on race. The particular blueprint for narration of self and experience that I posit in this project stands in opposition that dominant narrative as I advocate instead for the flourishing of people of color through narration of self. I propose a call to people of color that we counteract and dismantle our racist system by telling our stories. In this project, I explore four theologians from the perspective of storytelling and memory: Father Robert Schreiter, Stephen Crites, Miroslav Volf …

Struck Down And Not Destroyed: A New Way To Carry Trauma, Rebecca L. Weygandt Jan 2018

Struck Down And Not Destroyed: A New Way To Carry Trauma, Rebecca L. Weygandt

Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects

There seems to be an assumption in many Christian communities that suggest people should avoid the experience of pain and suffering. This is often communicated by encouraging those who grapple with difficult realities to have a positive perspective or attitude. As a future leader in the Church, I am concerned about the negative impact of this message on the emotional and spiritual health of people. I am specifically concerned about those who engage in the arduous work of reconciliation and peacemaking and how they can survive the inevitable pain and difficulty of this work over an extended period of time, …

The Black Reconciliation: Finding Restoration Through Healing Circles In A Racialized World, Geneva Ree Taylor Jan 2018

The Black Reconciliation: Finding Restoration Through Healing Circles In A Racialized World, Geneva Ree Taylor

Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects

This thesis will examine the ways in which African American communities can engage in a healing process that will produce personal, relational, communal, societal and global restoration. This project will specifically identify and examine the trauma and brokenness that African Americans experience in a racialized society. To accomplish this, a theological foundation will be established that will help to develop strategies, tools, and skills that can support the process of healing and restoration. In addition, this thesis will explain how current models of reconciliation are not adequate to address the deeply rooted complexities that people of color face in America. …

Belong, Become, Believe: A New Model For Children's Ministry Building Toward A Holistic Vision Of Discipleship And Diversity In Multi-Ethnic Children's Ministry, Katey Hage Jan 2018

Belong, Become, Believe: A New Model For Children's Ministry Building Toward A Holistic Vision Of Discipleship And Diversity In Multi-Ethnic Children's Ministry, Katey Hage

Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses

As the Church in the United States grapples with challenging issues of race and racism that permeate our world, children’s ministry is also impacted by these very same issues and lived experiences for a diverse community of people. This thesis seeks to help the church acknowledge that all children have particular racial and cultural identity that is formed within family and social system contexts; and it seeks to affirm the belief that children are God’s good creation and made in the image of God. With these truths in place, connections can be drawn between a child’s cultural and racial identity …

Ethics And Effectiveness Of Medical Brigades As A Primary Care Method In Rural And Remote Areas, Emilie Christie Jan 2018

Ethics And Effectiveness Of Medical Brigades As A Primary Care Method In Rural And Remote Areas, Emilie Christie

Senior Honors Projects

Medical brigades, also known as mobile health clinics, are temporary primary care stations set up by volunteer students and health professionals to bring basic healthcare to remote areas free of charge. The present review aims to explore the effectiveness and ethics of brigades, concluding in recommendations to improve these aspects of brigades. Literature regarding brigade effectiveness was examined and synthesized, while brigade ethics were analyzed through four main ethical principles of medicine: respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice. Proposed improvements to brigades include rapid testing and connection to care for chronic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, access to mental health …

Law And Religion In Alliance: Guido De Bres And The Restriction Of Religious Liberty, Antoine Theron Jan 2018

Law And Religion In Alliance: Guido De Bres And The Restriction Of Religious Liberty, Antoine Theron

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigates why the Dutch reformer Guido De Bres believed that the law should restrict religious liberty. In other words, why did De Bres believe that political rulers should not tolerate religious liberty? The answer developed in this dissertation is that De Bres’s restrictive view of religious liberty was largely the result of his vision of an alliance between law and religion. De Bres’s vision of an alliance between law and religion was his theological response to the acute challenge of his concrete historical (political, social) context. De Bres’s vision offered a solution to the desperate plight of the …
