Every day Tamara pretended to be asleep until Andrew left for work. It made things easier for both of them. She lay as still as possible, her eyes closed, her breath silent as his clothes rustled and the dishes clinked, as the front door closed and locked. Then she waited a little longer, just in case; sometimes he forgot his wallet or his Metro pass.

My wish for society is that someday we will collectively choose to elevate girls and women with bad hair to their rightful place at the top. There would be no more looking askance at thirteen-year-olds with asymmetrical pompadours. Instead, we might enroll them in a special leadership course with an emphasis on geopolitical issues. A woman with a bad haircut is a woman who is willing to take risks. She is independent, a little impulsive, and-in many cases-frugal. She is farsighted, prepared to live with her (or her stylist's) mistakes. She understands the impermanence of hair. It is almost certain …

I have Japanese hairs. Coarse, stiff, black Japanese strings intermixed with my wave of fine American strands. Sometimes I find them as I them my fingers through my hair and pluck them out; I tug them between my fingers, marveling at their strength and ductility. They are strong, resilient-much stronger than my American hairs. I wind them around my fingers, roll them into complicated knots, and then slowly pull until they SNAP. Then I sift the pieces onto the ground.

Kerver Book of Hours: 2018 Senior Capstone
First established at the “the sign of the Unicorn,” Thielman Kerver’s Parisian shop was surrounded by other members of the printing community. The shared use of engravers often led printers to duplicate or share the images they used. The particular marks they developed to distinguish their work took shape as early trademarks that separated one printer’s work from another. This essay examines the symbolism and visual elements incorporated into the unique colophon that identified Kerver's work.

Professional Preparation In A Caring Christian Institution: Experiences Of Holistic Change In The Lives Of Students Who Do Not Profess Christian Faith, Ruth Smith
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Many Christian tertiary educators deeply long to see holistic transformation in students' lives. This qualitative study grew out of the desire to discover whether students who are not Christ-followers, but who apply to study within an overtly Christian context, experience such change. This second of two articles investigates what specific changes respondents observed in relationship to God, Christian faith, others, and self, linking to the institutional vision of being transformational and relational, as well as when in relation to their program, and through what means any changes occurred. It also discusses recommendations from the participants on how to enable non-Christ-followers …

I know you were just joking, back in our classroom, about our Fruit-Roll-Ups burning where we left them in the gymnasium lunchroom. Because of the fire drill. I know you probably weren't thinking about your father at all when you said the joke, even though it was your first day back at school. After everything happened. Were you? Were you thinking of your father when you joked about our Fruit-Roll-Ups burning? I couldn't think of anything else after our teacher told us-the horribleness of a father burning-the horribleness of a father sleeping and burning. I know I should have thought …

The day Rafael Ochoa first noticed the thorns on his hands, it was too late to do anything about them. It was a Thursday, near the end of March. He ducked into the high school auditorium, accompanied as always by a simmering storm cloud of anger, his hands stuffed into his pockets: two stones at his sides. A blue bruise was spreading across his jaw.
Transcendent Realities: The Search For Meaning In The Modernisms Of Yeats, Joyce, And Pound, David A. Price
Transcendent Realities: The Search For Meaning In The Modernisms Of Yeats, Joyce, And Pound, David A. Price
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the binary of transcendence and immanence in the poetry of W. B. Yeats, The Cantos of Ezra Pound, and James Joyce’s Ulysses. Utilizing a theoretical lens provided primarily through the writings of Jacques Derrida and an historical context established by Charles Taylor’s A Secular Age, the paper argues that the literary texts of Yeats, Pound, and Joyce deconstruct a Western cultural history of a transcendent-immanent binary and seek to revive elements of the transcendent as a cure to the consequences of the dominant materialist-immanent worldview of Enlightenment modernity. This paper relies on the distinction between twentieth century …

An 'Alter Kampfer' At The Forefront Of The Holocaust: Otto Ohlendorf Between Careerism And Nazi Fundamentalism, Jennifer B. Capani
Theses and Dissertations
On April 7th, 1951, Holocaust perpetrator Otto Ohlendorf’s death sentence was carried out according to the ruling of the United States Military Courts in Nuremberg. In The United States vs. Otto Ohlendorf, et. al., leaders of the Einsatzgruppen, mobile killing units, were tried for war crimes which led to the deaths of millions of Jews and partisans. Under Ohlendorf’s leadership of Einsatzgruppen D, more than 90,000 people were liquidated in the Ukraine. After this assignment, Ohlendorf resumed his positions head of Domestic Security in the Reich Security Main Office. As the war ended, he surrendered, and revealed the full scope …
