A Viennese In London: English Reception, Joshua Iyer, Stephanie Tillman, Ashley Ramirez
2018 Festschrift: Franz Josef Haydn's "The Creation"
In a culture conducive to refining his compositions, Haydn was able to find success through his patrons and musical techniques. London was the largest musical city at the time, where advertising played a key role in the attendance at concerts. Haydn attended performances there which educated him on London’s music. His patrons (such as violinist Johann Peter Salomon and author Charles Burney) were immensely helpful in his growing musical career in London. Haydn’s shift in compositional style accordingly reflected his stay in London. He combined the music he heard in the city with his own musical language to create his …

The Bridge Between Eras: How Haydn’S Creation Oratorio Displays Both Enlightened And Romantic Qualities, Amy Croft, Abigail Roselieb, Grace K. Dwyer
2018 Festschrift: Franz Josef Haydn's "The Creation"
The English Enlightenment was an all encompassing ideology, affecting many different fields such as science, religion, and the arts. Focus on supernatural stories and divine miracles gave way to rational thought, furthering science and promoting stories about the triumphs of humanity. Music was likewise affected by this new movement, catering itself to the interests of society; instead of depicting humanity as sinful and ignorant, compositions centered on the glory of creation and the strength and intellect of humanity. Haydn’s Creation Oratorio is a prime example of Enlightenment values, depicting the creation story as a triumph of both God and man …

The second aspect is an analysis of the work, particularly looking at text painting, comedic elements, and orchestration. Finally, we will discuss the reception of Haydn’s work and the importance it held in relation to the aesthetics of the time. The Creation was a staple of Haydn’s work, and would prove to …
Trauma In Guatemala And Postville, Iowa, Jessica J. Lechtenberg
Trauma In Guatemala And Postville, Iowa, Jessica J. Lechtenberg
Latin American Studies: Student Scholarship & Creative Works
This study uses a historical understanding of Guatemala to explain the significant trauma following the largest immigration raid in U.S. history which primarily deported Guatemalan residents who had been working at the Agriprocessors meat processing plant without documentation. Through an analysis of literature detailing the immigration raid, Guatemala's history of violence, and court proceedings, I have found that high levels of trauma exist for the individuals who were deported following the raid and for their families and friends. Personal communication with the current Dean of Students at Postville's public school lends a hand in gaining a deeper understanding of the …
Toward A Theology Of Transformation, Hannah Kathleen Griggs
Toward A Theology Of Transformation, Hannah Kathleen Griggs
Eddie Mabry Diversity Award
Black liberation theologians come to terms with white supremacy by collectively remembering the story of the Exodus and Jesus' crucifixion--affirming God's preference for freedom and in-the-world salvation. The particular history of white American Christianity requires a different story to provide the foundation for our social memory. As white American Christians, we have certain blind spots—blind spots created by historical and social privileges that have given white people unequal access to power and resources. The story of Zacchaeus has the potential to help reframe white Christianity’s conception of race relations in the United States, shifting from a reconciliation paradigm to a …

Women And Dao In Gao Xingjian’S Works, Jianmei Liu
Women And Dao In Gao Xingjian’S Works, Jianmei Liu
Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報
Drawing on the existing scholarly studies that have gone beyond the misogynist paradigm, such as those by Mabel Lee, Gilbert Fong, Terry Siu-han Yip, Kwok-kan Tam, and Mary Mazzilli, I intend to explore the connection between the Zen Buddhist comprehension of Dao and the representation of women in Gao Xingjian’s novels and plays. As desire and sexual relationships play a very crucial part in the realm of Zen, the role of women is inevitably bound up with self-awareness and self-reflection, which are enshrined by Gao Xingjian as necessary on the path toward individual enlightenment. According to Gao, even if women’s …

In the wake of a nationally televised humiliation, Jindo Cho leaves the world of competitive figure skating to attend state college.
