In the foreign language learning process, errors are considered unavoidable, both in terms of speaking and writing. Two sources of errors are detailed in this study: learners' direct translation of their native language or another foreign language they have learned (interlingual errors), and the target language's original errors (intralingual errors). This study details errors in morphology and syntax, errors caused by the target language itself, and explains their causes. The concept of ellipsis is a controversial and much discussed subject within the field of linguistics. Ellipsis is a term that is used to describe the omission of words or phrases in a sentence. However, this kind of omission can lead to misunderstanding and confusion. Honorifics are the grammatical encoding of (or by the upper) social rank or intimacy between speakers, listeners, and third parties (cf. Bußmann 2002, 284). Whereas the honorific system is present within Thai and German speech communities, the possibilities of structurally realizing courtesy and politeness in both languages vary. This research article investigates the comparative language usage of refugee metaphors in German and Thai in two selected online newspapers: Süddeutsche Zeitung and Thairath. According to Lakoff and Johnson's (1980) cognitive theory of the conceptual metaphor, metaphors exert a major influence on our thinking, perceptions and behaviour in everyday life. This study uses both quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze data from a German and a Thai corpus. It was found that twelve source domains are used in German and Thai data. In both corpora, refugees were represented in six domains, namely as GOODS, ENEMIES, WATER, OBJECTS, GUESTS/VISITORS and VEHICLES. …

Literary translation requires an understanding of cultural context: norms, behavior and cultural values. Translating culture-specific items from literary texts is therefore a very challenging task. The present paper explores translation strategies used in the transfer from Burmese into German of the book Myanmar erzählt: 25 zeitgenössiche Kurzgeschichten (25 Myanmar contemporary short stories) by Klaus R. Schröder und Georg Noack (2008), with a focus on the culture-specific challenges of translation. First, theories of translation are explained, then cultural specificity, culture-specific translation problems and strategies in culture-specific translation are described. This dissertation studies the impacts of China's monetary policy on China's housing market, stock market, and China's economic growth.

The first essay examines macroeconomic determinants of China's housing price by constructing a VAR model. Granger Causality tests, impulse response functions and variance decompositions are used to analyze the impacts of macroeconomic factors on the housing price. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of conflict on the sociopolitical status of women in several affected countries. The conflicts analyzed within this work are both violent and non-violent. I infer that conflict acts as an impetus to propel gender equity. I utilize the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) dataset to determine which movements in women’s equality have been made over the preceding twelve years and reinforce that data analysis with qualitative information through case analysis to add context and meaning to the quantitative findings.

At the beginning of World War I, the only military working dogs the United States owned were sled dogs. In comparison, European nations in World War I used canines as sentries, messengers, ambulance, and draft dogs. In 1942, members of the American public, created Dogs for Defense Inc. to help recruit dogs for military use. By the end of the Vietnam War, dogs no longer were donated by the American public for use, rather the American military owned the dogs they deployed.

A study done at the end of 2017 indicates the counterfeit industry has reached $1.2 trillion and is estimated to reach $1.82 trillion by the end of 2020. Counterfeit goods have many ways to reach the final consumer including flea markets, liquidation sales, street vendors, illicit storefronts, and legitimate businesses, as well as online retailers. Tolkien’s Legendarium has in many ways codified modern fantasy. Illustrations and film adaptations of it have had far-reaching consequences on popular culture, building an 80-year tradition of visual depictions of Tolkienesque fantasy. Particularly, Elven characters are usually depicted wearing costume inspired by Victorian notions of Western medieval costume. The story of the rural soldiers and militiamen of Virginia that served in the American Revolution remains open to historical research and exploration. Recent scholarship of Virginia’s military contribution to the Revolution focuses heavily on relationships of power among social groups that operated within the colony’s hierarchy, concluding that a lack of white, lower-class political and economic representation disabled mobilization among the Old Dominion’s more settled regions. My study emphasizes the revolutionary backcountry’s story by using Fauquier County, Virginia as a case study.

Historical objects often have dark and horrible stories hidden just beneath their unassuming and innocent visage. The picture above is one such example of this type of object. At first glance the photo seems to depict a simple brick building; however, this building is anything but simple. It was used as a slave pen in the 19th century.
