Review Of Richard L. Davis And The Color Line In Ohio Coal: A Hocking Valley Mine Labor Organizer, 1862–1900, By Frans H. Doppen, Cicero Fain
History Faculty Research
Much has been written on union organizers' bitter struggle to establish collective bargaining in the coal mines of central and southern Appalachia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Mine operators regularly employed deprivation, intimidation, black and white strikebreakers, violence, and murder to enforce their will. Thus, one can imagine the enormity of the challenges facing an African American coal mine labor organizer during this era. Yet, this is the task Richard L. Davis took on "among his 'colored brothers'" in the "microregion known as the Little Cities of Black Diamonds," located in southeastern Ohio's Hocking River Valley (p. …

Maddy is a child with a rare disease called Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC). Certain triggers like heat and stress cause her to become partially or totally paralyzed and experience painful neck spasms called dystonia. Her disease is so rare that little is known about it to this day. Further research would help improve the quality of life of Maddy and other children living with AHC. Vanessa Ward represents every good and confronts the bad about the politics. North Omaha has produced some great gems over the years. Athletics, musicians, entrepreneurship, community, the professions, intellectual capital and lastly in politics. Space does not allow me to expand on each but I surely could. Ernie Chambers, Gayle Sayers, Buddy Miles, Cathy Hughes, Bob Gibson, Johnny Rodgers, Gabrielle Union, Dr. Donald Townsend, Symone Sanders, the Fair Deal Café and oh yea, Malcolm. This short list represents only the “tip of the iceberg” of what our north Omaha has offered. For of those not on this short, I ask …

CAHSS Faculty Presentations, Proceedings, Lectures, and Symposia
Objective. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if and how the Awakenings Equine Assisted Learning program was effective at improving the professionalism, confidence, communication skills and adaptability of students preparing for careers as Anesthesiologist Assistants. Background. Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is a rapidly growing experiential model that utilizes horses to enhance participants' awareness of their own non-verbal language, communication styles, projection of self-confidence and competence, and problem-solving abilities (Chandler, 2012; Green, 2012, 2013; Kane, 2012; Trotter, 2012). Methods. As a part of their regular educational and clinical rotations, first year students in the Anesthesiologist Assistant (AA) program …

Translation And Evolution: Byzantine Monastic Studies Since Ca. 1990, Hannah Ewing
Faculty Publications
While monks were integral parts of the long‐lasting Byzantine world, Byzantine monasticism and its study can be relatively obscure to nonspecialists, given the diversity of monastic forms practiced in the empire. This piece presents a brief primer on Byzantine monastic studies and evaluates key scholarship in this increasingly vigorous field. In particular, it assesses the major impact of critical editions and primary‐source translation projects since the 1990s and 2000s, including both archival materials and hagiography. Furthermore, it evaluates the current state of the field and outlines several opportunities and directions for further research.

Information Literacy For Music Graduate Students: A Framework Application, Michael J. Duffy Iv
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
The syllabus for a graduate-level bibliographic research course in music at Western Michigan University (WMU) provides an opportunity to link Frames of ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, as reflected in the WMU Libraries’ recently developed Information Literacy Core Competencies (ILCCs), to graduate instruction in music. I have had multiple opportunities to teach this graduate-level bibliographic research course, Introduction to Research in Music. Over the course of the semester, the course includes activities related to each of the Frames in the Framework.
These activities include in-class evaluation of reference and research resources, comparison of articles from Grove Music …
A Mixed Place: The Pastoral Symposium Of Horace, Kristen Ehrhardt
A Mixed Place: The Pastoral Symposium Of Horace, Kristen Ehrhardt
2018 Faculty Bibliography
When Horace invites Tyndaris to an outdoor drinking party in Odes 1.17, he mixes the locus amoenus of pastoral with the trappings of symposia. I argue that the mixture of the two poetic spaces creates a potentially volatile combination by muddling the expectations of each place’s safety and danger. I read 1.17 in light of other pastoral poems in Odes 1 to establish Horace’s creation of safe places through the negation of natural perils. Although pastoral has its own dangers, the addition of sympotic motifs in 1.17 attracts different beasts—sexual predators—to Tyndaris’ party.
